Tactical Briefing #8

Hey all you jazz players and re-occupiers out there,

Imagine this: It’s midnight, November 3rd. Every American’s fingernails are gnawed to the quick. Trump holds a razor-thin lead. If the counting stopped here, he’d eke out a win of the popular vote.

If Trump tries to steal the election, what will you do? What role are you prepared to play in this historic showdown?

We Must Not Abandon Myanmar!

As the remaining shreds of Myanmar's long-troubled democracy disintegrate, atrocities are being committed against civilians. But where is the rest of the world?

More than 700 have been killed by the military since it took power on February 1st. Last Friday, in a single city, it murdered more than 80 anti-coup protestors; reports suggest that heavy weaponry — including artillery and machine guns — was involved. That same day, 23 citizens were sentenced to death by a military court.

The UN's office in the country has limply insisted that "violence must cease immediately." But what government, organization, or individual actor has lifted a finger to take substantial action against Myanmar's brutal junta? Who stands in solidarity with its citizens?

It's time to separate the wheat from the chaff. We the people of the world must take charge of our own geopolitical destiny. Force the Bidens, Johnsons, Trudeaus, Morrisons, Merkels and Macrons of the world to put their moral mettle where their mouths are. Tell them to stop the Myanmar military from murdering its own people by all means possible. Tell 'em: "I won't vote for you unless you stand up for Myanmar."

Navalny's Beginning a Hunger Strike — So Should We

On Wednesday, imprisoned activist Alexei Navalny began a hunger strike to protest the unfair treatment he has received as an inmate of a penal colony outside Moscow. But while Navalny's hunger strike highlights the shameful handling he has been subjected to, there is much that can be done from outside his cell. That's why we must go on a hunger strike in solidarity.

Navalny claims he has been denied proper attention for severe pain and harassed by staff at the prison, which he describes as "a real concentration camp 60 miles away" from the Russian capital.

It's no surprise that Navalny, President Vladimir Putin's most popular critic, has suffered this sort of mistreatment. Only last August, the Kremlin tried to kill him with poison. And ever since his return from Germany, where he fled to recover from the botched assassination attempt, he has been a political prisoner of the Russian state.

But none of that has stopped him from launching the largest wave of protests his country has seen in a decade, or from publishing a damning investigation into Putin's private wealth. Even behind bars, Navalny remains a thorn in Putin's side.

Until Navalny is free, the tide of our discontent will not be stopped. In solidarity with the Navalny and the anti-Putin movement, renounce all food until all of Putin's assets are frozen, sanctions are imposed on his autocratic regime — and Navalny is justly freed.

Give Putin — authoritarian thug and criminal "killer" — his just deserts. Go on a #HungerStrikeForNavalny and #KickPutinsAssets.

How Much Does It Pay to Propagandize on Behalf of Tyrants?

What do the dictatorial Mugabe regime, the Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, the Sudanese junta, and now Myanmar's genocidal military government have in common — that is, besides a shared taste for blood and brutality?

They all, at one point, have been clients of the notorious Montreal-based lobbyist (read: propagandist) — and former Israeli intelligence officer — Ari Ben-Menashe.

In the wake of the coup d'état that overthrew the country's civilian government, Ben-Menashe and his Montreal-based firm Dickens & Madson (Canada) Inc. were hired by Myanmar's military "to assist in explaining the real situation in the country" to governments around the world.

The military has killed at least 183 people since the coup, which took place on February 1st. Ben-Menashe will apparently be paid $2 million.

The Canadian government and the federal police service (which has investigated Ben-Menashe for previous dealings with bad actors) say they are aware of the contract. A spokeswoman for Canada's foreign-affairs ministry said that it may be criminal, because Canada has imposed sanctions on Ben-Menashe's dissent-stifling employer.

"We are appalled that Ari Ben-Menashe has been hired as a lobbyist for the criminal Myanmar military junta," said Yadanar Maung, spokesperson for the activist group Justice for Myanmar. "Ari is not only attempting to whitewash the reputation of these killers but he will be doing so with funds stolen from the people of Myanmar."

Ben-Menashe is greedy, corrupt, cynical — and an out-and-out accessory to war criminals. His pockets are lined with blood; his livelihood founded on aiding and abetting heinous, even genocidal tyrants. He and his ilk are examples of some of the worst atrocity-justifying propagandists that liberal democracies allow.

Why not pay a visit to his firm's office in Montreal and show 'em a bit of righteous solidarity with Myanmar's slain protestors?

It's time to #LockUpAri.

Belarus

On Monday, masked men snatched Belarusian opposition figure Maria Kolesnikova off the streets of Minsk, stuffed her into an unmarked minivan, and drove her to the southern border. After arriving around 4am Tuesday morning, she ripped up her passport; as a result, border guards would not allow her to be sent across into Ukraine. Kolesnikova's kidnapping comes off the back of mass gatherings Sunday, when 100,000 marched through the streets of Minsk to President Lukashenko’s residence. Dressed in the nation's pre–Soviet era colors and waving flowers in the air, protestors have been disputing the legitimacy of last month's election for over four weeks. In place of striking journalists at Belarus' state news network, Putin has sent in personnel from Kremlin-funded broadcaster RT to prop up Lukashenko’s brutal regime. Brussels, London, Washington and Ottawa have made tepid calls for the preservation of democracy. The fate of the country hangs in the balance.

#BLM Street

I sensed then, and this belief would grow as the years went on, that the lifeblood of the movement was not going to be the spokesmen – the schooled, sophisticated, savvy upper crust who might be best at speechmaking and press conferences. They would be the leaders, naturally, but it was going to be the tens of thousands of faceless, nameless, anonymous men, women and children – men like my father, women like my mother, children like the boy I had been – who were going to rise like an irresistible army as this movement for civil rights took shape.

#WhiteHouseSiege Tactical Briefing #3

Trump is trying to steal the election . . . it’s got many of us pretty rattled . . . and things could turn very ugly very quickly as November 3rd approaches. Lawyers are already in court, mounting pre-emptive strikes and preparing for the scorched-earth scenarios likely to come.

Meanwhile white supremacists are waiting in the wings, spoiling for a violent showdown.

#WhiteHouseSiege Tactical Briefing #2

Time is short. Shall we rely on William Barr to interpret the law justly, in the interest of all Americans? On the police or military to drag Trump from the White House when he loses? On the grace and civility of the alt-right hordes and white supremacists? Of course not.

By now it’s clear that Trump and his sycophants will do anything to prevent Joe Biden from taking office, including crippling the Postal Service. There is no limit to their cynicism, no end to their corruption.

Co-opted by Capitalism

Earth Day’s fiftieth anniversary, which fell on April 22, marked a strange celebration for climate-change deniers. Breitbart News, the notorious mouthpiece of the alt-right, published an article that day under the headline “Michael Moore–backed ‘Planet of the Humans’ Takes Apart the Left’s Green Energy Scams.” The following day James Delingpole, who once wrote in The Telegraph that “it would be nice to think one day that there would be a Climate Nuremberg” for any and all “who talked up the global warming scare,” tweeted that Moore was his “new hero.”

Far-right media are after us. Here’s what we think of them.

The inevitable has happened: Adbusters has been caught up in the far-right’s hysterical, post-truth fantasia.
