#ReOccupy
Tactical Briefing #8
Hey all you jazz players and re-occupiers out there,
Imagine this: It’s midnight, November 3rd. Every American’s fingernails are gnawed to the quick. Trump holds a razor-thin lead. If the counting stopped here, he’d eke out a win of the popular vote.
If Trump tries to steal the election, what will you do? What role are you prepared to play in this historic showdown?

Unprime Day

Prime Day, Amazon’s yearly deal-hawking hoopla for its swindled subscribers, begins on June 21.
And there’s never been a better occasion to cancel your Prime membership and boycott Amazon and all its subsidiaries (which include AbeBooks, Amazon Studios, Audible, Book Depository, ComiXology, Goodreads, IMDb, Twitch, Whole Foods, Zappos, and dozens more).
As you can tell from the list above, Amazon owns a huge number of companies whose products and services millions use every single day.
. . . whether they’re walking to work in their Zappos shoes with an Audible audiobook in their ears, or watching streams on Twitch while scarfing down premium Whole Foods goodies, or binging Amazon Studios–produced TV shows while looking up the name of “that guy who looks like that other guy” on IMDb. And that’s true even when you leave Amazon itself out of the tally.
The point, in short, is not just that megacorporations are taking over the world, but that one monolithic corporation named Amazon controls an ever-increasing share of our mental environment.
Think that sounds exaggerated? Think again.
Amazon’s dominance is funded by an illegal price-rigging racket that disguises the costs of its “free shipping” promise to Prime members. As a result, it has oodles of capital to spend on ventures well beyond its e-commerce perview. (Remember when all it sold was books?)
Today, Amazon has its finger in cloud computing, streaming, electronics, home security, A.I., surveillance — and yes, even the defense industry. (Oh, and did I mention that it’s now a bank, too?) As one of the ten biggest corporations on the planet, it’s power to influence you is therefore enormous. It’s meddling in areas of your life you’re not even aware of.
With all this, what are the chances that Amazon has your best interest at heart? Ask yourself: Are you being empowered — or exploited?
Don’t be naive — after all, we’re talking about the same company that is set on hanging workers out to dry, chucking the environment in the bin, forcing you to foot its tax bill, and distorting democracy itself. And it’s no friend of whistleblowers, either.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Amazon’s fate lies in one person’s hands . . . one person with the power to make or break the gargantuan tech tyrant, by either shopping from it — or dropping it altogether.
And that person is you.
We’ve long called for unswooshing the swoosh. This Prime Day, ditch your membership and boycott the mother of all tech-corp crooks (and every one of her brats).
It’s time to #unprime Prime — not just for one day, but for good.

Why Don’t We Put the Head of the Sackler Family in Jail for Life?

For two decades Purdue Pharma peddled the falsehood that OxyContin, the painkiller at the heart of the deadly opioid epidemic, was safe and non-addictive.
“More people in the United States died from overdoses involving opioids in 2017,” in Nature’s account, ”than from HIV- or AIDS-related illnesses at the peak of the AIDS epidemic.”
“Nearly 500,000 [Americans] died from overdoses involving any opioid, including prescription and illicit opioids, from 1999-2019,” according to the CDC.
Those hundreds of thousands of deaths were fueled in large part by Purdue’s lie-fed pushing of OxyContin on doctors and patients alike. The company — which is owned by the Sacklers, one of the richest families in the U.S. — made tens of billions in the meantime.
While further waves of opioid-overdose deaths continue to surge, more than 600,000 claimants are seeking justice. The Sacklers have agreed to give up ownership of Purdue and contribute $4.5 billion to a collective settlement with the claimants.
But the terms of the settlement are far from fair. “Besides protecting the company from further legal action over opioids, the plan includes a blanket release from civil lawsuits for Purdue’s owners, members of the billionaire Sackler family,” as reported by The New York Times.
This is a blatant miscarriage of justice. The calously criminal Sackler family simply cannot be absolved from further legal responsibility in exchange for cash. That’s bald-faced bribery — and a gargantuan insult to the dead and grieving.
For the hundreds of thousands of lives they ruined, there’s only one place for the Sacklers.
And that’s behind bars — for life.

Who Will Win the Planetary Endgame?

Our world is being carved into two spheres of influence. For now, those spheres are limited merely to economic competition. But as the tension mounts, there is a real possibility that the China-vs-U.S. face-off could spill over into an all-out war — a global fight for worldwide hegemony — maybe even World War 3.
We must upend this disastrous dichotomy with a fresh option: The rise of a Third Force . . . a new paradigm in which we — not the billionaires, not the corporations, not even our political leaders, but we the people — start calling the shots from below.
If we’re going to work our way out of the existential bind we’re in as a species, the hierarchical, top-down power structures that have ruled the world for thousands of years have to collapse. With the most powerful activist tool ever invented in the palms of our hands, we in the streets have to take charge.
We’ve got the tools. We’ve got the metamemes. All we need are the numbers.
Let’s come together and change the tune of history!

Belarus
On Monday, masked men snatched Belarusian opposition figure Maria Kolesnikova off the streets of Minsk, stuffed her into an unmarked minivan, and drove her to the southern border. After arriving around 4am Tuesday morning, she ripped up her passport; as a result, border guards would not allow her to be sent across into Ukraine. Kolesnikova's kidnapping comes off the back of mass gatherings Sunday, when 100,000 marched through the streets of Minsk to President Lukashenko’s residence. Dressed in the nation's pre–Soviet era colors and waving flowers in the air, protestors have been disputing the legitimacy of last month's election for over four weeks. In place of striking journalists at Belarus' state news network, Putin has sent in personnel from Kremlin-funded broadcaster RT to prop up Lukashenko’s brutal regime. Brussels, London, Washington and Ottawa have made tepid calls for the preservation of democracy. The fate of the country hangs in the balance.

#BLM Street
I sensed then, and this belief would grow as the years went on, that the lifeblood of the movement was not going to be the spokesmen – the schooled, sophisticated, savvy upper crust who might be best at speechmaking and press conferences. They would be the leaders, naturally, but it was going to be the tens of thousands of faceless, nameless, anonymous men, women and children – men like my father, women like my mother, children like the boy I had been – who were going to rise like an irresistible army as this movement for civil rights took shape.

#WhiteHouseSiege Tactical Briefing #3

Trump is trying to steal the election . . . it’s got many of us pretty rattled . . . and things could turn very ugly very quickly as November 3rd approaches. Lawyers are already in court, mounting pre-emptive strikes and preparing for the scorched-earth scenarios likely to come.
Meanwhile white supremacists are waiting in the wings, spoiling for a violent showdown.
#WhiteHouseSiege Tactical Briefing #2

Time is short. Shall we rely on William Barr to interpret the law justly, in the interest of all Americans? On the police or military to drag Trump from the White House when he loses? On the grace and civility of the alt-right hordes and white supremacists? Of course not.
By now it’s clear that Trump and his sycophants will do anything to prevent Joe Biden from taking office, including crippling the Postal Service. There is no limit to their cynicism, no end to their corruption.
#WhiteHouseSiege Tactical Briefing #1

It’s been nine years since we set off the political earthquake of #OccupyWallStreet, laying siege to NYC’s Zuccotti Park and inspiring thousands of similar protests around the world.
The Occupy anniversary arrives September 17th, 2020. And it may be the perfect day to trigger another global big-bang moment — a massive collective action of the sweetest kind of disobedience.

Earth Day’s fiftieth anniversary, which fell on April 22, marked a strange celebration for climate-change deniers. Breitbart News, the notorious mouthpiece of the alt-right, published an article that day under the headline “Michael Moore–backed ‘Planet of the Humans’ Takes Apart the Left’s Green Energy Scams.” The following day James Delingpole, who once wrote in The Telegraph that “it would be nice to think one day that there would be a Climate Nuremberg” for any and all “who talked up the global warming scare,” tweeted that Moore was his “new hero.”
