There’s a theory that a microbe-carrying asteroid hit our planet and life began in the warm ocean waters. A few billion years later came our first great migration: we crawled onto the beach and learned how to live on land. This maneuver succeeded brilliantly. The tale of how we got to today is nothing short of miraculous.
But now we’re embarking on a second great migration. We’re abandoning the physical world and moving into a virtual one. It’s too early to tell how this evolutionary leap will work out. It may well succeed spectacularly, in yet unknown ways, and go on forever. But it could also come to a sudden, shuddering halt.
