Rupture or Rapture?

This millennium-long human adventure of ours may now be reaching a climax.
Rupture or Rapture?

From Greek democracy to Christian love to modernity’s promise of utopia – the human story has been a series of grand narratives, each consuming and evolving beyond the one that came before. Reason eclipsed faith, freedom eclipsed tyranny and industry eclipsed the agrarian way of life.

Transition was not always easy, but even when we stumbled and regressed – enduring bubonic plagues, barbarian invasions and interminable periods of darkness – there was always the unspoken assumption that, through it all, we will persist … that despite all the moral, spiritual and ideological blows, the human story goes on.

But then the world was ablaze in one brutal war after another. We bore witness to the Holocaust, Hiroshima and Nagasaki – a seemingly endless nightmare of genocide, sorrow and sin. We suffered losses of existential capital like never before, and our faith in the inherent goodness of man began to waver. And just as our spiritual house was beginning to crumble, violent fissures tore across our physical world. Ocean levels rose, glaciers melted and the arctic biomass began to release trillions of tons of frozen methane stored over the course of aeons. It suddenly dawned on us that this millennium-long human adventure of ours may be reaching a climax, that over the next few years, we may be living through what could well be humanity’s final rapture moment: peak oil, peak water, peak food, peak everything … even peak sanity and peak TIME!

Not even Nietzsche could have foretold the mystical amalgamation of melancholy, terror and life-affirming ecstasy weaving its way through the last chapters of man.

For the Wild, Kalle

It is true we do hear this news a lot. You all have excellent points. All I really hope for is that there might be a smooth transition period and shift in mindset. What good would it do if we go back to square one as one comment stated. We need to work together as a human race. Instead of being driven to succeed on our own individual achievements, I d hope we strive to be a communally minded race to strive for our survival in what might be a very different existence.

The following statement that was written has absolutely no meaning: "Reason eclipsed faith, freedom eclipsed tyranny and industry eclipsed the agrarian way of life."

What is your concept of "reason," "faith," "freedom," and "tyranny" ?

These words are all so abstract that virtually everyone is bound to have their own interpretation as to what they mean. Additionally, their meaning has significance in relation to the context in which they are mentioned. Many abstract words such as these are used throughout this essay, but I wanted to highlight the meaninglessness of this sentence.

You are using these words for emotional effect, rather than saying anything useful or worthwhile.

I urge you to read 'The Tyranny of Words' by Stuart Chase, a book that reveals the dangers of using such abstract language.

All pagan religions depict the end of the world as we know it and it sounds fairly close to what you are describing...

Ragnarok, Armageddon, 2012 of the Mayan calendar...take your pick.

Our existence in this universe is so puny that it is laughable to even consider that we have the power to control our destiny as a species.

The Moneylender...

All apocalyptic stories speak of CHANGE.. change for the WORSE... nothing more, nothing less...

CHANGE for the WORSE is what is going to happen...

Change for the worse is what is in the horizon..

Don't you worry the world is not going to end...

But then again I've seen the future, and the future looks grim..

The world is going to continue down the slope of Social Darwinism, and once you've gone down that slope, there's no turning back..

All you can do is prepare yourself and those you care about.. secure yourself.. insure yourself.. you have to care for yourself, and for your self only, no one else will..

For a more competitive world is in the horizon... profits are privatized, losses socialized.. societies are bound in debt.. and cui bono?.. who benefits and who benefited?... but then again, who cares?.. the truth is the ideas of cooperation, community and solidarity died a long time ago...

We live in the days of hyper individualism, competition and distrust... the fortunate, whoever they are, will consolidate their power, hiding behind impersonal corporations.. in the ideal world we have cooperation, in the real world corporation.. the less fortunate have been, are and will be set against each other.. fighting over the crumbs from the rich man's table.. you better not end in the bottom of the hierarchy.. you better not end as a slave fighting a slave...

In our hyper-sexualized world.. power is sexy.. your power determines your breeding potential.. so you better get sexy.. and quick

Brace yourself..

Social Darwinism is the new world order.. if there ever was one..

And you might ask yourself.. philosophizing and words, words words, does it all really matter?
