Western Prison of Mind

Notes from an ideological dissenter.

This article is available in:

Possibly the worst part of Westernism is the onslaught of introduced, embraced and abandoned ideas. There is never a resting moment from the jostling that we are pestered with from sunup to sundown. Whether you want to go in the direction of Westernism or not is irrelevant. Thinking outside of it presents us with nonsense. There is no language inside Westernism to catalogue what is outside of it.

As an empire, it’s impenetrable. All other concepts and ways of life are filtered through it, so that those of us inside of it have no hope of seeing anything more than shadows on a wall. Our narcissism prevents a true representation of anything “other” getting into our minds. We immediately recognize ourselves when we look outside at other faces – just as when we look at the distant stars, the only faces that are presented to us are our own.

There is not a thought that we think that gets us outside of the Big Brother prison. All of our thoughts are Western-filtered, and America is a model picture of this Western prison of the mind.

How can we think outside the only language we know?

The more artwork I look at, the more I see the fad in the fade-out scheme – so many wonderful ideas that are barely examined before the never-ending caucus race begins again. Ideas and artists are devoured, digested and reconstituted, all in a day’s work. We’re all bytes of information in a large Western server. It processes all of us in less time than heartbeats.

And yet, there are so many who are tired of feeling the Western hand on our collective pulses, but there is no avenue of escape that we might pursue. Every cry of foul is met with a sneer and a clever dig, “So you’re the different one and the rest of us are sheep, are we?”

That’s it right there.

I’m afraid there isn’t any other option than being a sheep, and I’m not sure that not wanting to be a sheep does one any good, but there it is. How do you change out of your sheep uniform when it’s all you have? I suppose the solution would be to run naked and embrace insanity, but that’s hardly a solution.

What if we headed back to Wall Street in the spring? What could be more symbolic? Rebirth and all that. Flood EVERYONE fed-up with the status quo with email invitations: The Green Party, NAACP, FFRF, ACLU, the Unions, the food co-ops, the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, Amnesty International, Greenpeace, the Sea Shepherd, PETA. Call Michael Moore, Morgan Spurlock, Ralph Nader, Anti-Flag, Propagandhi, Jello Biafra, Against All Authority, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, NPR, The Nation, Chuck D., Paris, Spike Lee....

So what's news? As well as 24 Hour Rolling/Breaking News, Adbusters has been known to introduce, embrace and then abandon ideas - before they have been fully debated. That is to turned off the reply button before the issue is played out. So perhaps Adbusters will allow us the time to debate this and other issues?

anon...u kno da rst

in order to think outside the box as it were, its firstly important to know precisely what the box actually consists of, like drawing a map or the periodic table of elements; locate your western elements then search for the holes in between... (the ... means someone who knows the answer is supposed to reply)

As of yesterday, Saturday, 11/24/12, mine was the last comment on this piece where it's linked on Adbusters' facebook page. I can imagine myself letting go with a piece like this; for its shortness it's very much on the mark. I tried to keep my responses there short and general too, but by fb standards I guess they could qualify as rant. I won't reproduce/spam them here. I WILL say the Girard quote I quoted (2 times removed) is worth going there to read...cause it sums up the big trip it took me more bandwidth to relate in my own words. Fifty one percent of us can figure out austerity has been refuted in practice and in theory. I take that back--gradations of the thing linger. However aware that 51% of us is now...I feel the need often to recreate an era [granted when there was less activism against this dogma] when various big scale "western" media seemed to say more. Of course, now we have a very expanded Moyers site when we didn't then; but perhaps Lydon and Rehm eg remind me of a time when I shared the hope of folks (in my little world) that are gone now. Maybe that's it. Yes, there is a tradition here of contacting something outside the "prison," Christopher Lydon far from home turf a few days ago

The article throws some interesting perspective but it is not that well defined and clear about exactly 'what' the author is talking about. Wish it had been more elaborate. : )
