Fair-trade, unionized, worker rights, supporting communities
It is essential to the Blackspot philosophy to use only the most ethical factories for the production of Blackspot shoes. Since last year, Blackspot has moved all of its production to Addah, Pakistan (our former factory was in Portugal). The company, Talon Sports, is unionized and has seven years experience in making fair trade sneakers. Adbusters has personally visited the factory and seen the production of Blackspot shoes in action. We were very pleased with the degree of worker rights, rates of pay, and factory schedules.
The Talon workday is eight hours long with a one-hour break for lunch and prayer. Workers receive the minimum provincial wage, 7000 Pakistan Rupees, to start and are given incremental increases based on skill and length of employment. Overtime is paid at double per extra hour worked. Each employee is given 14 annual days off, 10 casual days off, and 8 days of sick leave.
Talon Sports has over 700 employees and is governed by an elected board [who] take the community into account when making all company decisions. Their community partner body, The Talon Fairtrade Workers Welfare Society, provides medical services and micro loans to workers. A 15% premium on the FOB price of our shoes goes into a communal fund to help improve the living and working conditions of the workers and their families. The shoes themselves are made only in small runs to ensure sustainability.
