Anti-Capitalist Uprising Imminent?

Could the uprising in Greece spread to your neighborhood?

The pictures are astonishing: thousands of protesters in Greece have taken to the streets, rioting for days in response to the murder off 15-year-old Alexander Grigoropoulos who was killed by a Greek police officer.

But beyond the startling images of molotov cocktails exploding, cars burning and According to the AFP, a poll conducted in Greece found that a majority of people believe the rioters are part of a "popular uprising" and not simply group of "minority activists". That, it appears, is the truth the corporate media would like to hide.

What is going on in Greece could very well be the first hints of a coming global popular uprising. All it took in Greece was a spark to ignite the generalized dissatisfaction of the larger society. And now, the uncontrollable flames are spreading. What we are seeing is not disorganized chaos, but the intentional response of youthful spirits rebelling against the empty promises of a staid society based upon one goal: consuming more than your neighbor.

Could the same thing happen on your street? What would it take to ignite all those dissatisfied by the unfulfilled, and unfulfillable, promises of capitalism and hyper-consumerism?

Some of the most powerful imagery to come out of Greece is available at the Boston Globe website. Take a look at these pictures, and let us know your thoughts.

There is a lack of coherent thought here. First, there is zero connection between the riots and anti-capitalism. The only connection stated above is just that Michael White says so. He does so without providing any of his own reasoning or sources to that effect . . . it's an unfounded and unexplained charge. Second, the poll quoted says that 60% of Greeks view the riots as a "Mass Phenomenon" which is not necessarily a "popular uprising". Then the poll further posts data on whether or not the public approves of the government's handling of the crisis; and, just because the public doesn't approve of the government's handling of the crisis does not mean in any way that the public approves of the actions of the rioter's. The answer to that question, if posed, was not posted. Finally, the protesters could at large just as easily (and more probably) be protesting against general problems with the government and the police force that they would want improved and not thrown out all together. The real anarchists historically only represent a very small percentage of a population. This twisting of facts is just as bad as you see on Fox News and if this blog is indicative of Michael White's logical thought process, I'm not impressed. While I do reject ultra-consumerism, I reject illogical thought processes far more fervently. One last thought, glorifying a picture of a human being firebombed and burning alive is disgusting by any measure of morality i would respect.

The Greek left has long been tied to hardcore anti-capitalism. (they fought a civil war over it) Those cops have flame retardant suits, so don't worry about. Can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

If Michael White (or anyone for that matter) wants to make the connection between the riots over the police killing of a teenage boy and an anti-capitalist movement, then provide a logical case citing a trail of facts. Vague generalities that don't hold water have no place in serious dialogue. Furthermore, the disregard of human life by some people (including the statement I'm replying to) is the reason why the vast majority of the people on this planet want a non-corrupt, functioning police system.

Lucidstone, you had better compare the Greek activity of roiting against the Icelanders, the Thailanders, and other nationals that will come to follow to perform this type of activity. You need to see world history for what is and that which has been "completed". The Greeks activation of their general populus backing their "youngsters" is correct, since noone in Greece really likes neither their government nor capitalistic slavery. You need to travel the world more often and become more of a sociological "receiver" of events as they are occuring worldwide. Wait till it comes here.....you'll see the economy here in the U.S. go bad soon from the misguidings of economic principles and the lack of righteous, social ethics in politics, for the sake of mankind. One word comes to mind......Marxism (fighting people facing governments to free the people being oppressed). Let the Communist People Revolution begin!!!!!!!!!!!!
