War Crimes Trials?

Activists attempt to bring charges against the Israeli leadership in the international court system.

Bracing for a onslaught of international lawsuits, Israeli officials responsible for ordering and executing the Gaza offensive are now facing the very real possibility of being arrested and tried for war crimes in the ICC. An activist site launched from within Israel has issued arrest warrants for Tzipi Livni, Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak and urges anyone who has knowledge of the suspects’ plans for international travel to immediately contact The Hague. The age of Israeli impunity seems to be giving way to a harsh new reality.

Hey Justin - what Israel is doing in Palestine is genocide - there is no "worse thing" being done by others.

JUSTIN123 "Obviously, Israel is worse than all of these things put together. Why else would you devote so much time to them?" Correct! And the other atrocities you mentioned, I wonder how much Israel had a hand in those... lots of gold/diamonds/resources to steal from those countries, and well you know the rest.

If Israel was committing Genocide, then they wouldn't have stopped bombing. They wouldn't have let the Palestinian population double while under their control. I'm surprised you don't think that the death of 500,000 civilians in Darfur, which everyone agrees is genocide, is not worse than the death of 600-700 or so civilians in Gaza. Do you people really think that the goal here was to kill as many civilians as possible? War crimes happened, perhaps, but this sort of thinking that says that there is moral equivalence between what Israel has done and what is going on in Africa, Burma, North Korea... that is precisely the type of thinking that perpetuates the problem. Don't ignore one crisis because its more trendy to talk about another one. And don't dilute the credibility of of international justice by crying wolf about genocide.

So Justin - you're telling us to back off Isreal because they didn't kill enough people to be considered guilty of genocide?? Because they "allowed the population to double?" You talk about Palestinians like they were tadpoles. And this, by the way, is not a "trendy" issue - quite the opposite. That is really one of the dumbest and most irresponsible things I can imagine someone saying. Dead innocents are dead innocents - be they in Africa, Burma or Palestine.

I'm not saying back off. I'm saying bring it on. If you're going to make this much fuss about Israel, then why so silent on all the other issues? Numbers matter, because they indicate intent. Do you seriously think Israel made every effort to kill as many civilians as possible? Because thats what Genocide is.
