Shopping kills

A Wal-Mart employee is trampled to death by insane shoppers on Buy Nothing Day.
The New York Times reports on a Buy Nothing Day tragedy:
A Wal-Mart employee in suburban New York died after being trampled by a crush of shoppers who tore down the front doors and thronged into the store early Friday morning...The 34-year-old employee, who was not identified, was knocked down by a crowd that broke down the doors of the Wal-Mart at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, N.Y., and surged into the store. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at 6 a.m.
One shopper, Kimberly Cribbs, said she was standing near the back of the crowd at around 5 a.m. on Friday when people started pulling the doors from their hinges and rushing into the store. She said several people were knocked to the ground, and parents had to grab their children by the hands to keep them from being caught in the crush.“They were falling all over each other,” she said. “It was terrible.”

First thing I thought of was, "Adbusters is gonna make a great spoof ad out of this" and immediately pictured the slogan, "shopping kills". I guess it's "Buy or die", eh? I can't believe our society. It's sickening.

I am so wise

Geez, even corporate America has the decency not to exploit this person's death for gain. Perhaps you all should learn to emulate that example. The exploitation of this person’s death is even worse because we all know that this site and its readership would never condemn or even mention a death caused by doing something this site and its readership likes or being killed by individuals doing something approved by Kalle.

Wowza! Ok, you've GOT to explain this one, because this is a doozy even for your logic-free world-view. If this is "exploitation" then ALL efforts toward progress are exploitation if they reference the consequences of past abuses: Gandhi "exploited" the woes of outcasts in India by "using" them to show how bad their lives were, so that he could end those abuses. Martin Luther King Jr-- HUGE "exploiter," because he made people aware of abuses against blacks and "exploited" that to help progress. Any anti-war protester who points out that war causes death? Exploiter! Any environmentalist who "uses" an environmental crisis to push for a cleaner environment? Exploiter! Any person anywhere who fashions an argument based on a negative potential outcome and then shows that FACTUALLY this negative outcome HAS OCCURRED PREVIOUSLY? Exploiter! A whole method of persuasion dismissed as unethical because it is inconvenient for IASW's silly one-man-crusade against adbusters. Impressive.

Unlike Gandhi or MLK, nobody is going to do anything for the Wal-Mart employees who have to deal with this. Instead, you'll tisk tisk this, mock the shoppers who buy stuff you dislike, and promptly forget about it until the next it becomes useful to pull this out to club Wal-Mart with.
