Tactical Briefing #25: Showdown in Chicago

This article is available in:

Hey you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

Against the backdrop of a global uprising that is simmering in dozens of countries and thousands of cities and towns, the G8 and NATO will hold a rare simultaneous summit in Chicago this May. The world’s military and political elites, heads of state, 7,500 officials from 80 nations, and more than 2,500 journalists will be there.

And so will we.

On May 1, 50,000 people from all over the world will flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month. With a bit of luck, we’ll pull off the biggest multinational occupation of a summit meeting the world has ever seen.

And this time around we’re not going to put up with the kind of police repression that happened during the Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago, 1968 … nor will we abide by any phony restrictions the City of Chicago may want to impose on our first amendment rights. We’ll go there with our heads held high and assemble for a month-long people’s summit … we’ll march and chant and sing and shout and exercise our right to tell our elected representatives what we want … the constitution will be our guide.

And when the G8 and NATO meet behind closed doors on May 19, we’ll be ready with our demands: a Robin Hood Tax … a ban on high frequency ‘flash’ trading … a binding climate change accord … a three strikes and you’re out law for corporate criminals … an all out initiative for a nuclear-free Middle East … whatever we decide in our general assemblies and in our global internet brainstorm – we the people will set the agenda for the next few years and demand our leaders carry it out.

And if they don’t listen … if they ignore us and put our demands on the back burner like they’ve done so many times before … then, with Gandhian ferocity, we’ll flashmob the streets, shut down stock exchanges, campuses, corporate headquarters and cities across the globe … we’ll make the price of doing business as usual too much to bear.

Jammers, pack your tents, muster up your courage and prepare for a big bang in Chicago this Spring. If we don’t stand up now and fight now for a different kind of future we may not have much of a future … so let’s live without dead time for a month in May and see what happens …

Last I heard, the USA was not part of the Middle East. Nor does the USA deal in nuclear arms. (afaik)

That said, the USA is the worst conventional armaments criminal the world has ever known.

Sisters and Brothers in Adbusters or Occupy,
Please, in your call for May, you dont mention stopping all the wars that the US has started.
No more militarization by the US
But also, what is this thing about no more nukes in the Middle East??
Why dont you say the US?? This is very weird what you are saying. Why are you saying in the Middle East?
Do you mean Israel or what?

agreed. To whom is THIS demand being made? To Iran? How about Israel? How about the US, which funds the Israeli military; otherwise Israel would not have any of its many nuclear weapons, nor its massive military.

What are we talking about here? If the US and Israel are armed with nuclear weapons, it would simply be bizarre for "the people" here in the US to be demanding that Iran abandon all nuclear.

I hope Adbusters will clarify what this means.

If this event is going to be more than the theater of general assemblies and mass arrests/police brutality then an appeal needs to be made to rank and file workers to organize and go on strike during the summit/ protests. Imagine the impact if rank and file transit workers shut down the city, cab drivers block the streets, and hotel workers walk off the job during the summit. Any such action by workers would require a break with the union bureaucrats who will fight tooth and nail to keep them back.

Great plan. It would be hilarious to see the looks on the faces of leaders in a closed door "executive" meeting where the "workers' refused to bring in food and water.

oh, man. I love you, Adbusters, but this is so stupid I can't believe you're calling it 'tactical.' The occupy movement (which was named, but not actually created, by Adbusters; it was created by the people who showed up, let's be real here), has power precisely because it's NOT limited to one damn city or square.

We need to occupy each and every single one of our cities and towns. We won't win by congregating all our forces in one, easily repressed, location (and yes, I consider even the wholesale use of police violence pretty easy, for them). We will win by overwhelming them everywhere.

Summit hopping stopped being effective after Seattle 1999 (where it was, indeed, effective). Look at every summit protest we've engaged in since (I've been to and helped organize a few of 'em): Miami, Boston, New York, Twin Cities? Not effective except as promotional tools for the struggle.

OCCUPY YOUR SPACE, YOUR JOBS, and YOUR LIVES. If you live in Chicago, do it there. If not, do it where you are.

The real dates are MAY15 - MAY21 for the NATO G8 . #OCCUPYCHICAGO &
