Tactical Briefing #25: Showdown in Chicago

This article is available in:

Hey you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

Against the backdrop of a global uprising that is simmering in dozens of countries and thousands of cities and towns, the G8 and NATO will hold a rare simultaneous summit in Chicago this May. The world’s military and political elites, heads of state, 7,500 officials from 80 nations, and more than 2,500 journalists will be there.

And so will we.

On May 1, 50,000 people from all over the world will flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month. With a bit of luck, we’ll pull off the biggest multinational occupation of a summit meeting the world has ever seen.

And this time around we’re not going to put up with the kind of police repression that happened during the Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago, 1968 … nor will we abide by any phony restrictions the City of Chicago may want to impose on our first amendment rights. We’ll go there with our heads held high and assemble for a month-long people’s summit … we’ll march and chant and sing and shout and exercise our right to tell our elected representatives what we want … the constitution will be our guide.

And when the G8 and NATO meet behind closed doors on May 19, we’ll be ready with our demands: a Robin Hood Tax … a ban on high frequency ‘flash’ trading … a binding climate change accord … a three strikes and you’re out law for corporate criminals … an all out initiative for a nuclear-free Middle East … whatever we decide in our general assemblies and in our global internet brainstorm – we the people will set the agenda for the next few years and demand our leaders carry it out.

And if they don’t listen … if they ignore us and put our demands on the back burner like they’ve done so many times before … then, with Gandhian ferocity, we’ll flashmob the streets, shut down stock exchanges, campuses, corporate headquarters and cities across the globe … we’ll make the price of doing business as usual too much to bear.

Jammers, pack your tents, muster up your courage and prepare for a big bang in Chicago this Spring. If we don’t stand up now and fight now for a different kind of future we may not have much of a future … so let’s live without dead time for a month in May and see what happens …

for the wild,

Global Warming? check that. call it Climate Change... uh, check that. call it Manmade Ice Age.... keep the money coming in to fight man's destruction of the planet!

Just f'ing fantastic. The USA tried to land the World Cup, in which some games would be played in Chicago, but we didn't get it. We tried to get the Olympics for Chicago, but lost out on that... but we were 'awarded' the G8 & Nato Summits, which bring prestige? money? TROUBLE. to the City of Chicago.

Exactly and Rahm didn't consult the people of Chicago before inviting this event which spends our resources on a party for rich people.

It's really callous when people from the outside impose their politics on a city without any consideration for the impact on the community.

Which means Adbusters is pretty much working for the G8 and Rahm.

In the end, the Occupy movement will not be successful in accomplishing any of its stated civil or social agendas. Why? Because they are not rooted in principles and values. They seek to change the status quo but have no leadership to bring forth an honest and principled change. You all have a choice to change yourself or live this lie You cannot change another person, change always comes from within. Those who occupy have nothing else to cling to, you are the have-nots, the dissatisfied and the unproductive. The world you seek has nothing for you either in success or honor because you fail to recognize those who stand for both. You're lost and will continue down the road to failure and eventual oblivion long after the sanitation workers in Chicago sweep up and dispose of your hopes, dreams and aspirations. You are the "sheeple" so by all means go to Chicago and let yourselves be used, maimed and injured for the "cause". Just don't expect the 99% ers to pay you bail, medical bills or bus fare home. By the way, did you ever wonder why the "leaders" are NEVER on the front lines when the police batons are moments away. Ask them. Have a wonderful spring.

You obviously haven't met the folks involved in the Occupy Movement my friend. They are some of the most principled people I've encountered. The values of honoring human worth, cooperation, caring, and democratic process are evident in their thoughts and their actions. Rather than view them through the lens of the corporate media and your own prejudices, spend some time to visit and get a real sense of who we are. It could change your life.

I agree, but the problem is most Occupy participants also believe in consensus and thinking about what works.

This Adbusters declaration presumes to speak for the movement, but didn't bother to consult with the movement before making it.

I don't think it's principled to encourage people to stop what they are doing around the nation and gather for a spectacle with such a high risk of backfiring. The media has already decided to use it against the movement, why help them?

No longer. We are a Capitalic government. (To coin a new word meaning the country is run of the Capitalists, by the Capitalists, for the Capitalists.) The next President is going to be one of the richest Presidents ever who got his money from manipulating Capitalism; like by buying a company, laying off employees an squeezing every penny out that they can, and then selling it at a huge profit on which they pay little to no taxes. Willard the rat Romney made his fortune at this.
