The Spring Offensive Has Begun!

Occupy reemerges with festive, righteous anger.

JOHN MOORE/GETTY IMAGES

Across the world, Occupy celebrated our reemergence with a bold May Day General Strike. It was a day of tactical innovation and experimentation that sets the tone for the month ahead. Three tactics, in particular, gained prominence: agitating rank-and-file workers and radicalizing unions; deploying temporary, pop-up encampments instead of permanent occupations; and the growing black bloc presence. Over 30,000 occupiers marched in New York with strong union presence while in San Francisco workers disrupted ferry service. In London, occupiers set up tents outside the stock exchange. Meanwhile, in Seattle and Oakland, some militant occupiers embraced black bloc tactics of civil disobedience and property destruction. Overall, the day felt to many like a dress rehearsal for the future. As we move towards May 12, May 18 and May 20, we must, in the words of founding Zuccotti Marisa Holmes, “not just replicate and mimic what we’ve done before — but grow and learn and become even better.” That is the challenge our movement is now beginning to rise toward.

Here is a sample of the best coverage about Occupy’s General Strike.

“The atmosphere was one of festive, righteous anger… As the vanguard of the march, led by taxicabs festooned in banners, crossed Houston Street a huge cry went up and echoed back, turning Broadway into a canyon of noise for block after block. “This is some serious shit,” an onlooker said, shaking his head with a smile, at the throngs weaving back all the way to Union Square.”

“May Day in New York City was beautiful. From the “99 pickets” protest in the morning targeting corporate headquarters in midtown, to the Bryant Park pop-up occupation, to the Free University in Madison Square Park where students and educators went on strike by holding their classes outside, to the joyous, fair-like atmosphere of Union Square and, finally, with the energetic march with tens of thousands of people, chanting, singing, dancing all the way to Wall Street, the city felt re-imagined and re-invigorated. The entire day was inspiring and powerful.”

1. This isn't a military campaign, and the metaphor is due to our conditioning in a militaristic, patriarchal society. Reframe the conversation, please.
2. "The 99%" is our future--and most of the 99% at present ranges from lethargic to hostile. This means just hanging with our homies is not the way to build the Occupy movement, because outreach means just that: reaching outward, beyond present limits.
3. Making a fetish of anger is a dubious way to begin. Injustice ensures anger is always available, but frankly it doesn't serve well for steadfast, long-term work with strategic goals. It's kind of like chugging white lightning: definitely "gets you there" for a time, but gets in the way after not too long. Burnout is an ever-present risk of just raging against the machine.
4. Resist always and at all times, falling into the psychosis known by the name 'Vanguard'. The vanguard is the repository of all that's righteous, true, and needed. The entire project of the vanguard is to get those (fill in string of expletives here) to fit on the Procrustean bed of our superior knowledge and understanding. When "the 99%" becomes a bad joke, we'll know we are in deep trouble. Is it possible that we might not want to keep those who have jobs from getting work? There's some desperation around this issue right now, and rather than tying up their commute, it's possible that trying to see if from their standpoint--our shared standpoint--would lead to a more creative approach.

Too many of the self-styled anarchists I've been running into have "politics" that can basically be summed up as "Fuck you." That's groovy of course, but I suspect it doesn't lead to a stronger, growing movement for basic social change. Power relations won't occur via spontaneous combustion; some strategic thinking would be useful.

I agree with you, it kind of reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV7GSff4fIA

Well said! Adbusters, stop with all the "tactical briefing" language. Violence and damaging property will only piss people off. Honestly, protests are just a bunch of people standing around waving signs and annoying the cops-they have their place in the movement, maybe once a year. Actions like moving money into credit unions and local banks actually gets something done.

All kinds of movements are not going be a cake walk, not going to easy at all. Look at all the past events etc.

The wooden stake to the heart of the Financial Octopus is State Banks

North Dakota has a state bank and a 700 million dollar surplus for infrastructure. They don't have foreclosures, unemployment, and they have jobs. It's true. We can take our power back with state banks.
search YT for state banks and No Dakota and get the full story.

This is doable because other states have shown interest in this at the state level. Pull the power of bankers back to the LOCAL level for LOCAL economics and take this money from those that buy wars for the for profit war industry at the same time.

PICTURES OF EVERYONE WOMAN AND CHILD KILLED BY US DRONES PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED
AT ALL THE OWS EVENTS. IF POSSIBLE PICTURES OF THE PEOPLE WHO PILOT THOSE
DRONES AND ENGAGE IN THE EXTREME SHAME OF THIS BEHAVIOR, THIS MUST BE MADE AN OBJECT OF SHAME.

ITS USE MEANS AT THE VERY LEAST THAT US CITIZENS WILL FACE THE SAME SORT OF ATTACKS OR IT MAY LEAD TO NUCLEAR WAR. THESE SORTS OF ACTIONS UNDERMINE THE LEGETIMACY OF STATES AND ARE UNDERMINING THE LEGITMACY OF THE US STATE. A STATE CANNOT ENGAGE IN TERRORISM AND AT SAME TIME CLAIM IT IS DOING SO BECAUSE OF TERRORISM. CLEARLY WITH THE NDAA ACT THE US WILL BE ENGAGING IN SUCH KILLING WITHIN THE US TRYING TO CLAIM THE MURDER IS JUSTIFIED. THESE ACTIONS NEED TO BE UNIVERSALLY CONDEMNED REVERSED AND PROSECUTED. THIS KIND OF KILLING IS THE SAME AS THE US KILLING THE REUTERS JOURNALISTS IN IRAQ WITH AN APACHE GUN SHIP AND THE US APPARENLTY HAS BEEN TARGETING PEOPLE WHO TRY TO VIDEO TAPE THE DRONE KILLINGS. IF THIS SEEMS EXTREME REMEMBER THE US INVADING THE SOVERIEGN SPACE OF A NUCLEAR ARMED STATES AND KILLING THEIR CITIZENS AGAINST THE WILL OF THOSE STATES AND THEIR PEOPLE.

I agree, the US's use of Drones is off the charts idiotic and sickening. Obama shows a complete lack of character and humanity by having anything to do with this horrible policy that will make the world a living hell. A world where children fear these drones like rabbits in a jungle of pythons.

These drones are beyond the pale... inhumane... and a complete disgrace to any and all people that think this is a way to treat anyone, even an enemy. Like the pedophile victim, we are taught to accept the unacceptable and buy a plateful of lies justifying monsters FKN us in the ass..

These drones will not even be made in the US. Do any of these idiots get it that this foreign entity , Israel, will literally have guns pointed at our heads if this comes to pass. Wake Up.
