Paramilitary Policing Begins

Get ready for #OccupyChicago.
Paramilitary Policing Begins

Fearing the rebellious peaceful hordes of Occupy, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel has granted the city’s police force emergency purchasing power to suit-up for NATO and G8 meetings this May. Top of the list: 3000 new riot face shields worth $200,000. These face shields are said to be better than existing ones because they fit easier over top of gas masks and seal directly to the forehead of the helmet, preventing liquids from passing through.

“Rioters known to attend NATO and G8 meetings have been known to throw bags of urine and bags of feces at police. Chicago Police officers need a shield that can adapt to what is being thrown at them, ” Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields told the Chicago Sun Times.

In a city already strapped for cash for social programs, the move comes as a surprise to citizens and protestors alike.

Aaron Cynic of Chicagoist.com writes:

To our knowledge, no protesters plan on bringing any kind of scatological materials to the demonstrations in May. Furthermore, while cursory searching found plenty of speculation, rumor and hyperbole about such instances, we have yet to find any actual hard evidence outside of commentary. To the contrary, a civil liberties advocate told an independent news website in December: “This is part of a spectrum of information war strategies that the state uses to repress dissent.”

I know I will certainly be looking forward to it. I predict a big outcome in Chi for the May 1st general strike, an event that will convince many people who otherwise wouldn't have cared about the summit to come out in support. A sort of one-two punch; the timing couldn't be better, and the momentum, after a brief hiccup we are still in the midst of, will again be on the people's side.

As for the talk about the four new drones: to my knowledge, this is unprecedented for a summit, and one must consider the vast tactical advantages this will give to the police. Previously, groups splintering from the main conflict would have virtually free roam, as evidenced at RNC '08, but now the eyes in the sky will give a heightened situational awareness to the State, especially against a swarm of people who cannot see the other side of the street through the tear gas and cut off from events transpiring just a block a way.

Demonstrators will be challenged this year with what could be thought of as the Miami Model on crank. It will force adaptation and evolution in the direction of greater reliance on the collective, hive-mind intelligence through communications more clandestine than a twitter feed. It will make mobility and anticipation of the next few movements all the more important, while deemphasizing the use of mid-size groups, groups large enough to cause disruption in peripheral areas but now perhaps not large enough to stop being gobbled up by motorized police in contact with new unseen cameras in the sky.

Blending in with the citizenry while headed to flash convergences, communicated through horizontal, nonpublic networks, will be crucial. And dispersals must occur just as quickly as soon as the action is completed. This strategy is enabled by the anonymity of black bloc tactics, and can be repeated indefinitely without any concrete target visible for police reprisals.

It's going to be a landmark demo, though, and a pivot point for movements making the transition to new tactics. Even though the police may have new toys with which to oppress us and protect the crumbling facade order, it is still not comparable to the power of the people. Solidarity to my brothers and sisters, and I hope to see you there.

My best wishes to the brothers and sisters of Occupy Chicago .. beware the cops, they shall be thicker than flies on honey .. know that the man is after you .. the previous Chicago demonstration showed that regardless of your peaceful intent the cops work on confrontation ...

being from the West Coast i shall join in a solidarity demonstration in Victoria

Being 56 years of age the phenomenon of anonymous chatter is strange for me .. does this appeal to the introverted or the extroverted .. or does it result in local communal meetings .. or is it part of the very society you all profess to abhor ..

having spent much time in Central and South America where people are not quite as wired up as we are in the 1st world i note a different sort of individual
one who has far more contact of a direct nature with others .. one who is far more grounded in the barrio and the pueblo .. one who has far greater powers of concentration .. one who makes decisions far easier than the distracted minds we find here .. one who, though "backwards" is far more emotionally stable ..

Luckily I got booted off a popular travel site for pointing things like this out .. the campesino(a)s I encountered in western honduras .. belen gualcho especially .. even though they had horses as their primary means of transport, even though they are subsistence farmers, even though they were uneducated (but not ignorant) were SANE

I much prefer them to the 1st world jerks who zip around in poison mobiles, buy slave produx and are generally INSANE

perhaps we should explain Occupy Chicago to them .. over some aguardiente next to the supper table
they probably would opt for disoccupy Tegucigalpa

guess when i get back to victoria bc i will have to check this out
