#OCCUPYXMAS kicks off Nov 25/26

Let's take back the season!

Hey dreamers, occupiers, rabble-rousers,

You’ve been sleeping on the streets for two months pleading peacefully for a new spirit in economics. And just as your camps are raided, your eyes pepper sprayed and your head’s knocked in, another group of people are preparing to camp-out. Only these people aren’t here to support occupy Wall Street, they’re here to secure their spot in line for a Black Friday bargain at Super Target and Macy’s.

Occupy gave the world a new way of thinking about the fat cats and financial pirates on Wall Street. Now lets give them a new way of thinking about the holidays, about our own consumption habits. Lets’ use the coming 20th annual Buy Nothing Day to launch an all-out offensive to unseat the corporate kings on the holiday throne.

This year’s Black Friday will be the first campaign of the holiday season where we set the tone for a new type of holiday culminating with #OCCUPYXMAS. As the global protests of the 99% against corporate greed and casino capitalism continues, lets take the opportunity to hit the empire where it really hurts…the wallet.

On Nov 25/26th we escape the mayhem and unease of the biggest shopping day in North America and put the breaks on rabid consumerism for 24 hours. Flash mobs, consumer fasts, mall sit-ins, community events, credit card-ups, whirly-marts and jams, jams, jams! We don’t camp on the sidewalk for a reduced price tag on a flat screen TV or psycho-killer video game. Instead, we occupy the very paradigm that is fueling our eco, social and political decline.

Historically, Buy Nothing Day has been about fasting from hyper consumerism – a break from the cash register and reflecting on how dependent we really are on conspicuous consumption. On this 20th anniversary of Buy Nothing Day, we take it to the next level, marrying it with the message of #occupy…

We #OCCUPYXMAS.

Shenanigans begin November 25!

for the wild,

I haven't bought shit for Black Friday my entire life and will never give a shit about the deals. It was a bunch of expensive crap yesterday and it's a bunch of expensive crap today. People don't get stuff for me, I don't get stuff for them, we are all STILL friends and it's not like my family is going to totally ignore me because I didn't go shop today - they don't care about it either. Go to a park with your fucking kids people, don't take them on that crack cocaine binge that is shopping and obsessive over useless crap you won't even like in 6 months. Fuck the lazy haters who come to Adbusters just to complain about Adbusters - get your own website and your own movement - when you get 90,000+ subscribers one day maybe somebody will finally care about your opinions. Stop asking us to explain OWS to you, do your own research like the rest of us did. Torrent some back issues of Adbusters if you don't want to pay for it like some dirty hippie liberal, always trying to get things for free/cheap/with coupons/when it's on sale.

Well said!
I can add some personal [reluctantly gathered] research to your incisive observation: in undereducated, backwards ends-of-the-earth areas of the USA, where thinking for oneself is frowned- and even scowled-upon, and fundamentalism is NOT only NOT laughed at, but really really taken seriously--oh, no it gets MUCH worse--it's ENFORCED with an invisible iron hand [it's so sad]--they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to shop, shop, shop, shop, shop, for useless, trivial crap--and they just can't wait to rush to the stores and outdo each other's families in the mind-numbingly meaningless overconsumption contest which is Xmas...and every other holiday, and for any other reason....[in other words, in the areas that stopped progressing 30 years ago, where conformity is the KEY to social standing, which is EVERYTHING, shopping for every little thing Wal-Mart coughs up in each season is EVER so posh!

The problem is this 90 percent of us work for the fat cats to put food on our table. So when you don't buy it doesn't hurt them they still get paid, it's us that take the fall. We loses pay or bonuses that could have helped us out. So now you hurt the little guy not the fat cat.
