Battle for the Soul of Occupy

Jump, jump, jump over the dead body of the old left!

Alright you jammers, occupiers and Springtime dreamers,

First they silenced our uprising with a media blackout… then they smashed our encampments with midnight paramilitary raids… and now they’re threatening to neutralize our insurgency with an insidious campaign of donor money and co-optation. This counter-strategy worked to kill off the Tea Party’s outrage and turn it into a puppet of the Republican Party. Will the same happen with Occupy Wall Street? Will our insurgency turn into the Democrats’ Tea Party pet?

It’s up to you to decide if our movement goes the way of Paris ’68, the dust bin of could-have-been-insurrections, or something more daring, more inspiring, something not yet dreamed.

Will you allow Occupy to become a project of the old left, the same cabal of old world thinkers who have blunted the possibility of revolution for decades? Will you allow MoveOn, The Nation and Ben & Jerry to put the brakes on our Spring Offensive and turn our struggle into a “99% Spring” reelection campaign for President Obama?

We are now in a battle for the soul of Occupy… a fight to the finish between the impotent old left and the new vibrant, horizontal left who launched Occupy Wall Street from the bottom-up and who dreams of real democracy and another world.

Whatever you do, don’t allow our revolutionary struggle to fizzle out into another lefty whine and clicktivist campaign like has happened so many times in the past. Let’s Occupy the clicktivists and crash the MoveOn party. Let’s #DEFENDOCCUPY and stop the derailment of our movement that looms ahead.

for the wild,

What we need is for men and women to speak freely to each other without fear of condemnation in person and in mass groups.

Thus, your idea is valid- spread the love- reap the insurrection.

Definitely we have to remain on topic, don't let people infiltrate and distract. Eventually this movement must result in something completely new, new parties, new ways of thinking... not just supporting the existing status quo.

God bless,
Mark Wilson.

and #ows occupy the aspen ideas festival 07.01.2012

as far as the article, let's be subversive----in the spirit of community, let's use move.on org's message machine to get our messages out? in order to really be the 99%, we must unite with the right--the tea partiers against the tyranny of our present elites.

see below:

Lee,

This week, tens of thousands of people are getting trained at 99% Spring action trainings. Thanks to you, people in your community can put their training into practice right away at your Tax the 1% protest.

We want to spread the "Tax the 1%" message far and wide. So make sure local newspapers and TV and radio stations know that you're organizing a protest on Tax Day and why they should cover it.

Here are three tips to get media coverage:
1.
Build your media contact list. The fastest way to get the email or fax number for local media is by searching Google or looking under the "about" or "contact" sections of their webpage. You can also call the general line and ask where to send information about your event. You'll want to make sure you add bigger media outlets to your list, but don't forget about local blogs, newspapers, and radio stations. For more information on building your list, click here:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=274235&id=39112-19370991-8lbmytx&t=2

2.
Send your press advisory and call to follow up. Let the local media know about your event no later than two days before. Fill in the sample advisory with your details, then email or fax it to the media. After you send it out, make a quick call to confirm that they got it. If not, ask for the correct contact information and re-send.

For your sample press advisory, click here: http://s3.moveon.org/misc/taxthe1_advisory.doc?id=39112-19370991-8lbmytx&t=3

3.
Call the media again the day before your event. Follow up calls are critical to attracting the media. A day before your event, send your advisory again and make another call to ask if the reporter will attend. You'll only have about 30 seconds, so quickly mention why your event is compelling and deserves their attention. Maybe you have a huge crowd, or there's a powerful visual they'd find interesting. Most media will be talking about taxes on Tax Day, so that may be the only reason they need!

To help with what to say when you call, check out this sample script: http://s3.moveon.org/misc/reporterscript.doc?id=39112-19370991-8lbmytx&t=4

If you have any questions, please contact your Council or Regional Organizer, or email [email protected]

Thanks for all you do.

This is just part of Obama's push for the Buffet rule. Which he wants to be part of, in a tit for tat exchange, where Buffet gets the policies he wants enacted by Senate Democrats, the Treasury and the Fed, and in exchange, Obama gets to use Buffet's name to make it look like the Democrats are taking effective action against the inequity disparity by taxing millionaires at a slightly higher rate.

However, it's a scam. If Obama had wanted to tax the rich and increase revenue, he would have simply let the Bush tax cuts expire, instead of using them as a faux bargaining chip to extend jobless benefits for 13 months, while essentially handing over 858 billion in revenue.

The Buffet rule is a scam because it doesn't increase taxes on those earning 250K or more (as Obama promised in his campaign) only on those earning more than $1 million in income, and it creates loopholes whereby millionaires can simply get their accountants and financial advisers to set up more elaborate tax evasion schemes.

But of course, it achieves its real aim. It satisfies the Democratic base, keeps them mollified and lining up at polling booths to cast their votes for the president in November.

I don't see how Occupy could use MoveOn to their advantage, unless MoveOn were willing to promote the nationwide May day general strike, which they won't.

Soul is the operative word. Integrity from the core of OWS's intention. However instead of integrity, thosE familiar with OWS core group are witnessing something quite different. Hyper-focusing on the purity of The Movement, lack of transparency and circular conversation. It's a road to OWS oblivion. Yes - make room for prophetic voices in the streets but think of ways to make the oppressed welcome. The 99% are not going to relate to street slam downs of the cops at midnight or meetings where one has to introduce one's self with preferred gender pronouns. We can't afford that kind of elitism. OWS is morphing into its own 1% with its own sense of entitlement (those who sleep on the street are "better" than those who can't afford to do so) while other groups like O4O just keep doing the work that needs to be done. Evolution and transformation are what the world needs, not more ideological entrenchment. Rigidity will snap this tree in the wind while the rest of those committed to justice will keep our roots, bend, thank OWS for giving a voice to our discontent but say goodbye with sadness as we continue to fight in ways that are both prophetic and effective. You can't envision a better world while replicating dystopia - secrecy, elitism, lack of transparency.

When you walk into a shop in NY today, consider that the person working on the floor is probably going to a shelter and it's not by choice. The families of the incarcerated, the hungry, the hopeless, the mentally ill, surround you in Union Square and on Wall Street. Does OWS's actions welcome them? And if they were to organize for their bread and roses would you trash them as traitors? Keep the soul and integrity. That will require evolution.

Agreed. Occupy in NY is eroding its reputation particularly among those who support it most. The support is just psychic energy - it came in the form of bodies, money, networking, and sacrifice. We are all experiencing a group that has no understanding of what alliance and friendship mean. True warriors and activists don't just kick ass. The soul of a warrior - or a team of warriors - is comprised of compassion. Want to keep the movement "pure"? Be willing to evolve.

OWS began a movement with great potential...and now idiots within are seeking to kill the whole thing by their own hands. Forget MoveOn, I smell Karl Rove.
