Battle for the Soul of Occupy

Jump, jump, jump over the dead body of the old left!

Alright you jammers, occupiers and Springtime dreamers,

First they silenced our uprising with a media blackout… then they smashed our encampments with midnight paramilitary raids… and now they’re threatening to neutralize our insurgency with an insidious campaign of donor money and co-optation. This counter-strategy worked to kill off the Tea Party’s outrage and turn it into a puppet of the Republican Party. Will the same happen with Occupy Wall Street? Will our insurgency turn into the Democrats’ Tea Party pet?

It’s up to you to decide if our movement goes the way of Paris ’68, the dust bin of could-have-been-insurrections, or something more daring, more inspiring, something not yet dreamed.

Will you allow Occupy to become a project of the old left, the same cabal of old world thinkers who have blunted the possibility of revolution for decades? Will you allow MoveOn, The Nation and Ben & Jerry to put the brakes on our Spring Offensive and turn our struggle into a “99% Spring” reelection campaign for President Obama?

We are now in a battle for the soul of Occupy… a fight to the finish between the impotent old left and the new vibrant, horizontal left who launched Occupy Wall Street from the bottom-up and who dreams of real democracy and another world.

Whatever you do, don’t allow our revolutionary struggle to fizzle out into another lefty whine and clicktivist campaign like has happened so many times in the past. Let’s Occupy the clicktivists and crash the MoveOn party. Let’s #DEFENDOCCUPY and stop the derailment of our movement that looms ahead.

I don't think the 99% Spring co-opters are up for sustained street action. MoveOn is a ridiculously passive bunch when they demonstrate. What they will be good for is pressuring power. The Establishment links that many MoveOn-ers have will allow them access. That is okay with me.

But the MINUTE this group makes a peep about voting Democrat and preaching compromises on behalf of the corrupt engines of this empire, I will view them as the ADVERSARY to be taken down, along with the sick as fuck system that hopes it has us boxed in.

Occupy has stood up for the homeless, the defrauded, labor, victims of economic crimes and murder, and all the while behaving admirably in the face of vicious policing. We did that, the world saw it and called out its approval (media lockdown be damned), and so we occupy a higher moral ground than anyone else in the political landscape. Anyone.

We are not dead, we exist in the hearts of millions, and we are paying attention. Things are happening. Many cool bank actions, for example. There will be some moment this year that will prove our popularity in numbers.

Meanwhile, let us just see if the Springers can mobilize 100,000 activists. Bring on the big names, the professional trumpeters for passive moderation, let us see what they can do. They might do some good things. Let us simply accept the good and expose the bad. Nothing can be taken from us.

These organizations have aligned themselves with existing political groups. Their intentions may be noble, and it's great to mobilize the people who are looking for a way to give voice to their frustrations with how things are.... But Adbusters has been bringing some basic truths to light for some time about our ENTIRE system being broken...

What is CLEAR is that all existing political groups are getting $$ from the wealthy and from corporations and these groups pander to their needs. PEOPLE are a tertiary concern...

That ain't gonna come from these groups!

This is offensive and stupid and mean spirited and thoroughly wrong-headed. (And ageist). It reminds me of the stupid power struggles within the tea party.

If you really believe that the folks at MoveOn and other 99% Spring orgs haven't been sitting out in the parks with the rest of us, you are fools.

You don't own occupy. Occupy is bigger than your glossy magazine.

I could not agree more. The people behind Adbusters are like 60 -something years old. Talk about the "old left".

This kind of in-fighting is pure bullshit. We all need to remain in solidarity with each other and fight the real enemies, not each other. I support both OWS and 99% Spring.
