Huff & Puff It Down

Arianna used us to launch her site and now she sells us out.

Socialite Arianna Huffington built a blog-empire on the backs of thousands of citizen journalists. She exploited our idealism and let us labor under the illusion that the Huffington Post was different, independent and leftist. Now she's cashed in and three thousand indie bloggers find themselves working for a megacorp.

But the Huffington Post is not Arianna's to sell. It is ours: the lefty writers and readers, environmentalism activists and anti-corporate organizers who flooded the site with 25 million visits a month. So we're going to take it back.

We'll stop going to her site. And we'll stop blogging for her too. Then we'll give birth to an alternative to AOL's HuffPo by using the #huffpuff hash tag to tell the world about our favorite counter-culture websites and indie blogs.

We are the ones who built the Huffington Post. And now we will be the ones who will huff & puff it down.

Updated | Feb. 10 – 4:00 p.m.

#HUFFPUFF has touched a nerve. Now, a firestorm is developing as writers, readers and publishers of indie media are rallying to huff and puff Arianna's AOL merger into the ground.

Media activists, this is our chance to strike a blow against the corporate media and simultaneously energize the indie blogosphere … a step towards a world where the news that animates our political and activist lives is not controlled by those who pander to advertisers and the bottom line. With continued pressure, we can topple AOL-HuffPo and fertilize a healthy media ecology.

So let's keep blowing harder and harder!

  • If you are a writer, take your content off the Huffington Post (like Al Giordano of @Narco_News did)
  • If you are a HuffPo reader, unsubscribe/uninstall the app/delete your bookmark to the Huffington Post (like @jaberard, @RavenWytch, and @drlawler)
  • Everyone, keep telling the world about your favorite alternative indie sites using the #huffpuff tag (see the list of alternatives nominated thus far below)

There is power in concerted effort, so let's keep huff'n & puff'n and huff'n & puff'n until we've blown AOL/HuffPost's house down!

Here is a list of alternative media sources our readers have suggested via twitter and on our blog:

Tweet your HuffPo alternative with the #huffpuff tag or post your suggestion in the comments below.

What were they thinking... well, we know Arianna was thinking dollar $ign$$$$$, but how stupid can AOL be to pay 300 million for nothing! I was shocked when I saw the Huff Post homepage announcement, I thought, what did she have to sell??? I'm done with Huffington Post, delete their bookmark and stick with Raw Story for now and help whatever site that grows out of the big bail from HP.

You are absoulutely right, what was she thinking. $315,000,000. for other peoples creative input. She sold out everybody who supported the Huffington Post. I was on that site multiple times a day, when I was wanting to get first hand impartial news around the world. Now with this sell out in your face I am taking the money and run see you all later crap, I will no longer visit a corporate for profit web site. I will use The Raw Story web site for now on.
When I see her giving her opinion on something, I will reach for the Mute button.

This was to be expected, and, frankly, although the HuffPo carried some serious left voices, most of the writers were bourgeois celebs with mainstream liberal (read Pro Democratic party/ Obama supporting) leanings and analyses. Arianna speaks (at times) like a leftie but she's just one more rich establishmentarian.
For an independent left, and little known site with extraordinary analyses and posting some of the best political observers on the Web, check out The Greanville Post (http://www.greanvillepost.com/). IMHO it's places like this that should have been growing, not the celebrity circus of Huffington Post, but then again Arianna had the millions and the fame to put her site on the map at the very start...as usual money and connections count in this rotten capitalist society.

The business side of this is a one sentence bore - Woman exploits free labor, cashes out for millions. Life goes on. But the interesting story involves the readers. What we see here is Lucy pulling the football from Charlie Brown again. And the reason that cartoon worked for Schultz, is its inherent truth - people never learn.

Readers who are now self-referring as "leftists" are unable to spot commercial exploitation as it unfolds? The whole mess, which includes the Facebooks and Twitters, Cable TV news, and web sites like HuffPo, and in fact the government itself, is one mega-balloon of capitalist exploitation machinery gone wild. How is it possible that a so-called leftist is Charlie Browned yet again by a Lucy as obvious as Arianna Huffington?

The whiners deserve their humiliation at the hands of the Chief Bitch.
