Adbusters

Hate Speech or Free Speech?

Why is Shoppers Drug Mart pulling 3,500 copies of Adbusters magazine off its shelves?

Here is the story of why Adbusters has been blacklisted:

A walled off ghetto, an occupying military that controls the entry of food and daily necessities, desperate attempts by hungry civilians to smuggle commodities through tunnels, and punitive collective punishment against all those who resist … there are never-to-be-forgotten differences, of course, but also some striking similarities between the Warsaw ghetto in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II and the open air prison of Gaza in Israeli-occupied Palestine today. And yet the Canadian Jewish Congress is accusing Adbusters of anti-Semitism for making this historical comparison, and it has successfully lobbied one of Canada's biggest pharmacy chains to remove Adbusters magazine from its shelves.

Now there's a meme war brewing in one of Canada's national newspapers:

Canadian Jewish Congress attacks Adbusters on October 22
Adbusters fights back on November 2

As any pro-peace activist knows, the pro-Israel lobby has a sordid history of using the charge of anti-Semitism to silence criticism of Israeli policies. Even President Carter was smeared because he dared speak of the "abominable oppression and persecution in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a rigid system of required passes and strict segregation between Palestine's citizens and Jewish settlers in the West Bank".

But the use of cluster bombs on civilians in Lebanon in the closing days of the last Israeli incursion there, the wholesale deaths of noncombatants in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead, the extrajudicial assassination in Dubai last January, the killing of protesters aboard the Mavi Marmara this summer, the ongoing construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank and the hate speech of Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, have changed the way the world now looks at Israel. This is fast morphing into a meme war that the Israeli PR machine can no longer win and this more than anything may finally bring Israel to the peace negotiation table in good faith.

Check out the Canadian Journalism Project's article "Adbusters, ghettoes and Shoppers: Anti-semitism or free speech?" and The Canadian Charger's "Canada's Adbusters Magazine and the Israeli Lobby".

If you think that publishing side-by-side images of the Gaza and Warsaw ghettos is a valid expression of free speech, send an email to Shoppers Drug Mart’s CEO Jürgen Schreiber – [email protected] and [email protected] – and tell him that you are boycotting his store until Adbusters is back on the shelves. Be polite but clear. Then send a note to the Canadian Jewish Congresswww.cjc.ca/about-cjc/staff/ – reminding them that in a free country we debate rather than censor.

While I must agree that it is horrible that your relatives perished in the holocaust, and that that loss will resound for generations, nothing can absolve Israel of its atrocities. That's like saying that I could kill my neighbour because another, completely unrelated person, killed my wife.

About your "... less offensive manner[,]" remark, I must disagree entirely. In no way does condemning Israel of its abhorrent actions incite hatred against the Jewish people. It only incites hatred towards Israel; which, as far as I can see, is absolutely deserved. Such a racist, hate-filled state should be condemned: nicities won't get us anywhere in such a situation. It's absolutely silly to say anything short of "Israel deserves the criticism it has recieved." Playing the 'anti-semitism' card is really, really depressing, and only serves to show that you find yourself persecuted. Persecuted how, exactly? Because a Jewish state did horrible things, and are now called upon by individuals to answer for their crimes?

I cannot say that I see any persecution in that. Where I do see persecution however, happens to be the very subject of this article: how the Israelis treat the Palestinians they subjugate to their rule. Their tactics are despicable, to put it lightly: in the 2008 attack upon Gaza they started first by bombing police stations, schools (specifically targeting a certain UN funded elementary school) and even private dwellings. Rather than admit that they had done anything wrong, they claimed that they had killed more combatants than civilians.

To put it into perspective, between 2000 and 2004, Israelis brutally murdered 660 Palestinian children and wounded 9,000. The same article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/article394547.ece) goes on to mention that over 25,000 homes were destroyed, 4,000 Palestinians were killed (I am unsure whether these include the previous figures of child-deaths at the hands of Israel) and over THIRTY THOUSAND were injured.

This, my dear, is not persecution of the Jewish state. This is a prosecution of the Jewish state. A condmenation of a hateful war-machine of a country that denies humanitarian aid (even now) to the populace it has raped.

In 2008, Israel invaded Gaza once more. Can you guess the death count? I'll give you a hint: the conflict lasted just over twenty days. Could you imagine the devestation that could occur in twenty days at the hand of the state that you attempt to defend with accusations of anti-semitism on the part of adbusters?

1,400 Palestinians. Fourteen hundred people. 300 of them were children. Three hundred of them. Writing that makes chills run up and down my spine. Over one in five people that were brutally murdered by Israeli troops were kids. That's sickening, is it not? Israel is a disgusting state, and I am ashamed that my country supports such an oppressive and horrible regime. To quote a release by Amnesty International; "Hundreds of civilians were killed in attacks carried out using high-precision weapons – airdelivered bombs and missiles, and tank shells. Others, including women and children, were shot at short range when posing no threat to the lives of the Israeli soldiers. Aerial bombardments launched from Israeli F-16 combat aircraft targeted and destroyed civilian homes without warning, killing and injuring scores of their inhabitants, often while they slept. Children playing on the roofs of their homes or in the street and other civilians going about their daily business, as well as medical staff attending the wounded were killed in broad daylight by Hellfire and other highly accurate missiles launched from helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, and by precision projectiles fired from tanks." (page ten of http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE15/015/2009/en/8f299083-9a74-4853-860f-0563725e633a/mde150152009en.pdf)

Like I said before, you're not being persecuted for this; these are simple facts about the country. I could even go further and talk about their use of chemical and incindiary weapons upon the civilians, but I guess that this shall suffice.

Please, please, please, check out this document if you still wish to defend Israel: http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE15/015/2009/en/8f299083-9a74-4853-860f-0563725e633a/mde150152009en.pdf

Encyclopedia Britannica (15th edition):
"Khazars, confederation of Turkic and Iranian tribes that established a major commercial empire in the second half of the 6th century, covering the southeastern section of modern European Russia... In the middle of the 8th century the ruling classes adopted Judaism as their religion.

The Jewish Encyclopedia:
"Khazars, a non-Semitic, Asiatic, Mongolian tribal nation who emigrated into Eastern Europe about the first century, who were converted as an entire nation to Judaism in the seventh century by the expanding Russian nation which absorbed the entire Khazar population, and who account for the presence in Eastern Europe of the great numbers of Yiddish-speaking Jews in Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Galatia, Besserabia and Rumania.
The Encyclopedia Judaica, Vol. 10, (1971) relates the following about the Khazars (Chazars):

"Khazars, a national group of general Turkic type, independent and sovereign in Eastern Europe between the seventh and tenth centuries A.D. During part of this time the leading Khazars professed Judaism."
(Encyclopedia Judicia, Vol. 10, (1971)
Collier’ s Encyclopedia, Volume 14, page 65 states:

"Khazars [kaza'rz], a semi-nomadic tribe of Turkish or Tatar origin who first appeared north of the Caucasus in the early part of the third century...in the Eighth Century Khaghan Bulan decided in favor of the Jews and accepted Judaism for himself and for his people.

The Bible
Relates that the Khazar (Ashkenaz) Jews were/are the sons of Japheth not Shem:
"Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth;...the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz..."
(Genesis 10:1-3)
Therefore, the Bible proves that the Ashkenaz Jews [Khazars] are not the descendants of Shem and cannot be Semite.
Revelation 2:9,,3:9

Everyone has a right to be heard and everyone has a right to say what they think. This is ultimate freedom and this in the only way we can agree to disagree. I think its absurd that a magazing that posts an article relating to the jewish state of Israel and highlighting the atrocitites that they are committing can be blacklisted for simply stating opinion. Im not sure why some Jews continue to use the victim card to get out of any criticism against them, when really the criticism is directed at governement policy and their war crimes in which they are committing. For those Jewish people who insist to remain victims of the genocide which took place over half a century ago, I ask you to think about all the innocent children, women and young men who are being persecuted in the name of Israeli security. Cluster bombs, murdering, torturing...all in the name of the jewish state which indirectly implies those associated with jewish people. Cry, cry cry all you want about the holocaust and how it somehow still affects you, or grow up and move with the times. Just like non jews who fought in WW2 in order to secure peace in the world so that the jews could live hand in hand with their neighbors and not have to worry about being murdered anymore, we should all extend our hands towards ensuring the innocent civilians who are caught in the crossfire in the occupied lands enjoy that same freedom. Otherwise, these debates are uselss and will only create fractions within the people...genocide aside, anti semetic aside, terrorism aside...we can all agree that the children, women and future populations of Palestine deserve a chance to live in peace just like we all do. STOP USING THE VICTIM CARD AND OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE TRUE VICTIMS IN THIS MOMENT IN TIME.....or sound like a depressive neurotic psycho who can't get over the past. Long story short, Freedom of speech means anyone should have the right to publish anything they wish, if you dont like it then boycott it like im currently doing with all israeli goods or companies that support israel. Sorry guys but this is the only way we can agree to disagree. Much love and peace for all.

Why did Shoppers Drug Mart CEO Mr. Schreiber pull 3,500 copies of Adbusters magazine off his shelves and why is he now lying about why he did it? Why is one of Canada's iconic brands playing political games with freedom of speech?
