Facebook's Final #ZUCKUP

Let the exodus from the social network begin.

Ever since Facebook became an indispensable aspect of our lives, there has been a growing sense of foreboding that something is not quite right, a premonition that eventually we would need to make a total break with the site. In recent weeks, however, the importance of the social network for fomenting insurrections abroad has led many of us to conclude that Facebook was on the verge of transcending its narrow commercial concerns, that it was on the brink of elevating itself into a neutral platform for social revolution. Yesterday, our hopes were finally dashed.

On March 29, Facebook callously deleted the organizing page for the Third Intifada, a call for a Palestinian popular uprising to shake off Israel's brutal occupation that had over 200,000 supporters. The Third Intifada's Twitter and Google-owned YouTube pages still exist. Facebook's act of suppression is an unforgivable #ZUCKUP, may it be the last.

The first major #ZUCKUP was the commercialization of friendship. The second disturbing #ZUCKUP was the remorseless pursuit of privacy-invasive technologies. The third #ZUCKUP, the one that will be remembered as the final nail in Facebook's coffin, is the cynical attempt to stand in the way of history by blocking the people's worldwide movement toward self-governance and democracy.

Let us now kill Facebook with this #ZUCKUP campaign. Pull your allegiance, delete your account and watch for the day that Facebook implodes spectacularly.

In committing communal Facebook suicide, we will open up the possibility of new activist innovations, improved social apps for revolt, fresh perspectives on how to turn online passion into real world action.

I deleted my facebook account this evening having read this - admittedly I'd been considering it for a while and this made my mind up for me. I just wish I hadn't told someone this article was why I did it - know why? Because of the petty fickleness and double standards going on on this site. I don't even know what to say anymore, I'm sick of opinion - I'm sick of my opinions and I'm sick of the opinions of the people who comment on this site, whether I agree with them or not. Civil, intelligent debate has gone to the dogs when you can throw any opinion up here behind a mask and not have to worry about the consequences. And believe me when I say I'm fully aware of my own hypocrisy and the fact that I'm doing exactly that. I only checked out this site recently, although I'd heard good things about it and had high hopes. So naturally I'm disappointed at this stage by the kind of feedback that every. Single. Post. Gets. This insane spleen-venting that the internet has provided a forum for, I thought it was isolated to YouTube. Free speech - yes. Down with censorship - yes. Ranting and swearing mindlessly to the point that your once possibly-valid point isn't taken seriously anymore? No, thanks.

Did anyone read the Facebook user policy? I assume it includes a clause that allows FB to delete a profile of a person or group? I assume the user had to agree to this policy? But now everyone wants to use FB on their own terms?

Facebook is a business (with its own internal politics). As such, it is not [necessarily] your democratic political organizing device. Businesses of FB magnitude necessarily have power over politics (even to help prevent a revolution). This magnitude is the result of the functional nature of capitalism, which necessitates the businesses' perpetual growth.

If you call yourself politically alternative, or a radical, or something to that effect, why did you have a Facebook profile to begin with? Why does Adbusters?

Now you're upset that FB sets the rules?

you are really lame, trying to bring fb down is stupid, man how can you lie to yourself like that, for every stupid mind that thinks fb is making us forget our personal relationships theres 20 who think its not.

this post is really stupid
makes no sense
you are just trying to be against the hype that fb has because it seems cool to be against something thats popular.

"You just think it looks cool
You tell me you want to be different
You just change for the same..."

i think its hilarious the amount of people who are defending facebook... get off your computer and go outside!!!

if every single one of you deleted it, got outside and ACTUALLY did something then we'd have a revolution on our hands.
