Facebook's Final #ZUCKUP

Let the exodus from the social network begin.

Ever since Facebook became an indispensable aspect of our lives, there has been a growing sense of foreboding that something is not quite right, a premonition that eventually we would need to make a total break with the site. In recent weeks, however, the importance of the social network for fomenting insurrections abroad has led many of us to conclude that Facebook was on the verge of transcending its narrow commercial concerns, that it was on the brink of elevating itself into a neutral platform for social revolution. Yesterday, our hopes were finally dashed.

On March 29, Facebook callously deleted the organizing page for the Third Intifada, a call for a Palestinian popular uprising to shake off Israel's brutal occupation that had over 200,000 supporters. The Third Intifada's Twitter and Google-owned YouTube pages still exist. Facebook's act of suppression is an unforgivable #ZUCKUP, may it be the last.

The first major #ZUCKUP was the commercialization of friendship. The second disturbing #ZUCKUP was the remorseless pursuit of privacy-invasive technologies. The third #ZUCKUP, the one that will be remembered as the final nail in Facebook's coffin, is the cynical attempt to stand in the way of history by blocking the people's worldwide movement toward self-governance and democracy.

Let us now kill Facebook with this #ZUCKUP campaign. Pull your allegiance, delete your account and watch for the day that Facebook implodes spectacularly.

In committing communal Facebook suicide, we will open up the possibility of new activist innovations, improved social apps for revolt, fresh perspectives on how to turn online passion into real world action.

So Karolina you are saying that that is the best way to do it? That I should delete my facebook? If you give me some really good reasons (despite privacy issues) why I should not use it for modern revolutionary causes, I'm all ears. But I will not become a information hermit while I'm being raped by capitalist pigs. I really feel what you are saying and I can only encourage you to express you're feelings else where as well, not just here. There are battles to be fought everywhere.

No Tkaptur, I am not saying that for you it is the best way to do it. I am saying for me, it is much more effective to fight for what I believe in through personal contact. My feelings, thoughts and ideas are well expressed, I do not lack the words or courage to speak and I do not hold back. I am far from an information hermit, I just find my information through different sources. For me, the only way to fight capitalism and all it stands for is by disengaging from its machines. Facebook is just one of the many things I refuse to participate in, and I don't feel raped, I feel free.

Karolina, do you want a fucking cookie for not being on facebook?

Well, congratulations on your superiority in not joining the dumb masses of people who are under the delusion that they get something worthwhile out of it. But what would they know about their own lives?

And who knows, if you keep righteously bragging about it every chance you get you may show them the light. Or at least continue to reinforce your own sense of superiority.

They are saying to delete your facebook. I think it's ultimately good form for these types of situations... but what about everyone else? Facebook can be used against itself, why not take advantage of the information exchange and help gather the masses and sway them, create hysteria, chaos and confusion, make people scramble for their web browser searching and actually reading so that they can learn the problems the facebook (as well as other capitalist based) systems are causing and contributing to. If all it takes is one picture, status update or whatever to make someone realize there are better things out there than the way things are, suicide is the cowards way out. But they'll never take me alive, they'll kill me on facebook for internet guerilla slander first like they did the Third Intifada before I click suicide.
