Adbusters Wins Legal Victory

Our appeal was unanimously approved. We're one step closer to winning the right to buy airtime for citizen-produced, social marketing messages.

Press release issue by the Adbusters Media Foundation on Monday, April 6th, 2009:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Adbusters Media Foundation, the publisher of Adbusters magazine, has won an important appeal in its case against the CBC and Global Television Network. Adbusters initiated a landmark legal action against the media companies for refusing to sell airtime to Adbusters for its social marketing television campaigns.

In a unanimous decision released on Friday, April 3, the BC Court of Appeal overturned a previous BC Supreme Court ruling. Adbusters can now take its case against the media conglomerates to the BC Supreme Court.

Since 1989 Adbusters has attempted to purchase airtime from major commercial broadcasters in order to air its socially-minded public service spots. Routinely denied by network executives in Canada and the US, Adbusters is often left with little to no explanation as to why these citizen-produced messages are being censored. The case against the CBC and Global Television Network Inc. was brought about because Adbusters believes that the Canadian Charter grants every Canadian the right to access the public airwaves; to walk into their local TV stations and purchase 30-seconds of airtime under the same rules and conditions as advertising agencies do.

At issue in this groundbreaking case is the right of Canadian citizens to have (as stipulated by the Canadian Broadcasting Act) “a reasonable opportunity … to be exposed to the expression of differing views on matters of public concern.”

“This is a great day for Adbusters,” says Kalle Lasn, editor and co-founder of the magazine. “After 20 years of legal struggle, the courts have finally given us permission to take on the media corporations and hold them up to public scrutiny.”

Because AdBusters ads threaten corporate Archon status. A corporation is a government construct which removes the responsibility of business owners. Also the government generates regulation which create a barrier to entry for new and small businesses, and allow corporations to become "too big to fail".

Adbusters threatens the hegemony of the political/industrial complex.

Freedom of speech, it's healthy for a society.

But AdBusters message is out of date. Consumerism is not wrong, it's nature, cycles of production, consumption, and waste are the basis of the natural order.

It's poor design choices by human beings that are destructive. Pollution, waste materials that are toxic, is a result of poor design.

Good design mirrors natural design, waste equals food.

Consumerism is productive, why should we want people to be deprived? We should want everyone to possess an abundance of goods and resources.

Ending "consumerism" will do nothing to improve the quality of life of poor people around the globe. But technology will.

Dear Anonymous,

Your concern that people not be 'deprived' of possessing an abundance of goods and resources is noted. My concern is that people are being deprived of a healthy and sustainable planet as a result of blindly subscribing to a state of rabid consumerism.

I argue that Consumerism is the exact opposite of productivity. And I think an entirely productive and respectable culture of Amish people in America agrees with me on this. Trouble is, they don't waste their time with iPhones and such so they're not on here to tell you about it. Consumerism and the worship of bureaucracy are our own unique problems, not theirs...

You can tell by the "ism" at the end of the word that consumerism is a belief system. As such, you have taken a leap of blind faith in the almighty corporations and hit the ground hard. The Americanized Ritual of "Shopping" has become a world-wide distraction and a waste of energy and resources. The religion of Consumerism also has some basic tenets that you must agree with. Here's an idea of what they might look like from a Consumerist perspective:

1)The Corporation is never to be blamed for the misfortunes of a dissatisfied customer.

2)The Corporation has ONLY one obligation - to increase its size and presence. The purpose of government is to assist The Corporation in this goal.

3)Buying "more things" or "better things" is ALWAYS the solution to every problem.

4)Personal Productivity must be abandoned in favor of Bureaucracy. You are ALWAYS on Company Time.

5)Go forth and multiply. Tell all your friends. Buy the latest product for each of your children. Products are a great replacement for human affection and tenderness.

6)Goods purchased at a marked discount will bring you happiness. Goods purchased at full price are simply an expression of charity. Giving someone the opportunity to "save more money" is the Act Of Greatest Love.

7)Those who reap financial gain from The Corporation are blessed with good fortune and the ability to "spend more" because they are a better and smarter class of people.

8)The purpose of the Media Wing of The Corporation is to remind you of your allegiance to consumerism. To encourage and support you in your decision to buy things. There is no other possible topic that could bring more benefit to the world.

Now, I know what I would say about a religion that ascribed to these principles... but let's hear a response from another "Anonymous" Consumerist.
