TACTICAL BRIEFING #18

Occupy the High Ground!

This article is available in:

Hey you creatives, artists, environmentalists, workers, moms, dads, students, malcontents, do-gooders and aspiring martyrs in the snow:

The last four months have been hard fought, inspiring and delightfully revolutionary. We brought tents, hunkered down, held our assemblies, and lobbed a meme-bomb that continues to explode the world's imagination. Many of us have never felt so alive. We have fertilized the future with our revolutionary spirit … and a thousand flowers will surely bloom in the coming Spring.

But as winter approaches an ominous mood could set in … hope thwarted is in danger of turning sour, patience exhausted becoming anger, militant nonviolence losing its allure. It isn't just the mainstream media that says things could get ugly. What shall we do to keep the magic alive?

Here are a couple of emerging ideas:

STRATEGY #1: We summon our strength, grit our teeth and hang in there through winter … heroically we sleep in the snow … we impress the world with our determination and guts … and when the cops come, we put our bodies on the line and resist them nonviolently with everything we've got.

STRATEGY #2: We declare "victory" and throw a party … a festival … a potlatch … a jubilee … a grand gesture to celebrate, commemorate, rejoice in how far we've come, the comrades we've made, the glorious days ahead. Imagine, on a Saturday yet to be announced, perhaps our movement's three month anniversary on December 17, in every #OCCUPY in the world, we reclaim the streets for a weekend of triumphant hilarity and joyous revelry.

We dance like we've never danced before and invite the world to join us.

Then we clean up, scale back and most of us go indoors while the die-hards hold the camps. We use the winter to brainstorm, network, build momentum so that we may emerge rejuvenated with fresh tactics, philosophies, and a myriad projects ready to rumble next Spring.

Whatever we do, let's keep our revolutionary spirit alive … let's never stop living without dead time.

for the wild,

I agree - if OWS slows down, it will fail and fade away. I'm afraid this is already happening in the public consciousness, as news reports are becoming fewer.

Thanks, Shunyamurti. Nice job. It's the way of relating to ourselves and the world that we all secretly want. In a funny way, I do feel that world consciousness is shifting, because people understand the planet's resources are not unlimited, we have to stay in balance with the environment in order to survive - or for that matter for any life to survive. A living planet appears to be a rare thing. My spiritual tradition calls all life sacred.

Dear Adbusters, the problem with ''creating a meme'' and not being in control of it is that very professional, organized and powerful people will be working on it restlessly to the point that it will generate economical profits to them, you are out of that square in Wall Street, what did you wanted to happen? has it happened? learn and don't forget what's was already learnt and lived, some of the naive people that joined your strategy don't have memory of fighting for freedom, good luck

Occupy Protesters,
Have you realized by now that those with the power and money aren't going to give it up willingly?
So what will you do when it becomes apparent that peaceful demonstrations bring about no change?

Agenda? There's an agenda?

Unless you are talking about the complete destruction of free enterprise, only to be replaced with some cockamamie dream utopia where iPhones and iPads are free and you get to go to school for 20 years paid for by someone else.. then no, I sure haven't seen an agenda.

And that is why this "movement", such as it is, is doomed to fail.

But.. it was always meant to fail, wasn't it, AdBusters?

As soon as the elections are over the occupy movement (and the useful ground troops doing the occupying) will suddenly become as useful as a used tampon.. and will be disposed of just as quickly.

It is pretty obvious to some of us that this is the ultra lefty response to the Citizens United decision.. let's demonize corporate America well before they start spending money on the elections next year. Obama will have a war chest of a $1 Billion dollars and would be able to far outspend any GOP candidate if it wasn't for Citizens United, right?

So, let's poison the well, why don't we? Make corporate America the evil one and take all the attention away from Obama's failure as President, and especially away from his big ultra-wealthy donors.

Too bad you didn't count on all of Obama's cronies (like the owners of Solyndra) failing so beautifully and making Obama's connection with ultra-rich businessmen even of an issue than the Wall St bailouts!

It is rather amusing watching all this from the sidelines..

You kids have a nice winter, okay?
