The Birth of a Nation

Palestine's bid for statehood.

This week Palestinians are moving beyond the Israel- and US-dominated peace process and appealing directly to the world. They are asking the United Nations to formally recognize Palestine as an independent, sovereign state within its 1967 borders.

There is a profound symbolic significance to this move.

It was with a vote in the General Assembly in November 1947 that the state of Israel first achieved recognition through a resolution calling for mutually occupied land to be divided into two states. Israel and most of the nations of the world have long viewed that vote as the source of Israel’s legitimacy as a nation.

If the United Nations General Assembly created the state of Israel sixty years ago, it can create a Palestinian state now.

A bold stroke of poetic justice like that could breathe new life into the whole region and beyond.

You realize Jerusalem in the very early 1900's was roughly 65% Jewish? And within the entire area that would be labeled Israel AND Palestine the Jewish population was around 30% by 1940. I'm not sure how this quantifies as a "comparatively tiny minority".

You realize of course that you are blowing hot air. In 1900 the Jewish population of Palestine was about 10%. If 65% lived in Jerusalem, as you claim, then there were definetly a hundred times more turkeys in Palestine, and only one jew every three kilometers. You cannot lie like this, maybe in fascist countries like Israel information is controlled, but it is available in the rest of the world. More, you must realize of course that there was NO Israel in 1940. Suggest you read Shlomo Sand's "The Invention of the Jewish People", a well-documented work by an Israeli scholar that exami8nes the mythical hsitory that the ziofascists have invented for themselves.

You are an anti semite, you are blatantly anti Israel. Move forward not backward. I was in Jordan recently and all the innovations, the better of the econmomy is only there because the Jordanian people looked over the river and said, why can't we have that?" Israel is not perfect by any means but it has a right to exist, and hopefully one day in peace.

Proudly Anti-Israel! You act like that is a BAD thing not to be associated with such bully ... and I am Jewish... it's friggin embarrassing! Yeah sure the country should exist, if it can keep from being a thug sponsored by the US that is. Let them support their own war on brown people.
You know what people say when they look across the river: "That used to be ours (Arab's)"

@AnonymousSep25-06:17pm: You got your facts wrong. The population of Jews did not increase until the mid 1950's when the Israeli government open doors, invited and entice with money (U.S. foreign aid $) for all Jews around the world to move to that land. It was part of its agenda to over populate the country the Palestinians shared with them. Trouble in the region began when the natives of the land realized the underline intention (like what the American settlers did to the Native Indians). So the first Middle East war began and since Europe/U.S. don't want the Jews back in their country they supported Israel. Had Israel given the Palestinian people the same luxury they gave to their own people, the situation in the Middle East might not be as bad--but then again, wherever and whenever religion is involve they each have their own made-man justice on their side. Wars fought without god are much shorter.
