The Logic of Not Demanding

The Tea Party protests are shaking things up in conservative politics. But what have we dissenters from the left accomplished recently? Not much. We fill the streets, wave our signs and choke on some tear gas. Black bloc anarchists smash a few windows and pull off some daring stunts, but then the 24-hour news cycle moves on and we’re left feeling empty. Nothing has changed.

In a perverse way our protests may actually be reinforcing and validating the global consumerist regime. I sincerely believe that the G20 Summit leaders and organizers sigh with relief when they hear that we are once again mobilizing massive protests against them. After all, what would a successful economic summit be without thousands of angry protesters clashing with rows of automaton riot police and a few cop cars burning in the streets? Without sporadic spectacles like that, capitalism would lose its dynamic spark.

Maybe it’s time we deny them their regularly scheduled spectacles and try something new.

Next time they call an economic summit, why don’t we just ignore them? Instead of massive displays of anger, let’s give them eerily empty streets … silence … not a peep … nothing to validate their billion dollar security budgets. We refuse to react, refuse to engage, refuse to make demands. We don’t tell them what we want because they already know what we want: We want their system to die. Why make demands of the thing you want to destroy? Negotiating only grants legitimacy and continuity.

Instead we live like cats on the prowl, pulling off little acts of rebellion that frustrate their doomsday machine at every turn. Acts like cutting up our credit cards, moving our money, buying locally and spreading revolutionary memes. We meet in little groups in local indie coffee shops plotting audacious pranks and acts of civil disobedience: slowing traffic, liberating billboards, detonating stink bombs – crazy, random acts that hurt the bottom line.

Every day of the week we create weird, wild, wonderful happenings wherever we live around the globe. And we grow bolder with every 0.001 C˚ rise in the global temperature … more passionate with every 0.001 inch rise in the sea level … more defiant with every billion dollar Goldman Sachs bonus package. We attack capitalism – not at officially sanctioned protests – but like bees attacking a wounded beast with a billion incessant stings. We keep escalating our actions until the cost of doing business as usual becomes impossible to bear. And the bloodied beast finally falls to its knees.

This November’s Carnival is a good time to start: Let them have their conferences and summits … we will have our revolution of everyday life.

Will this be effective? What other new strategies can we employ to disrupt the status quo? Find activists near you and plan something for the Carnivalesque Rebellion Nov. 22–28.

For a start lets be honest about what capitalism as wrought in the last century. Basically a century of war driven by greed and ego, more than a hundred million people murdered to feed the psychopathic need of a minority for more, more, more.
Capitalism is basically a distribution of power from monarchy to the start of democracy, not a fair distribution, or one based upon merit but a minority based distribution with greed as it's only measure of value.
Forget economics and it's devil's dance of greed, control and consumerist illusion, let's focus on reality, the biology of humanity, it's social evolution into a more cohesive and supportive species, where power and access to resources are more evenly distributed based upon the needs of the individual as well as the needs of society.
The truth is humanity has been derailed by a genetically damaged minority, the psychopaths and narcissists, the psychopaths a the plotting and scheming controllers and the narcissists as their willing minions, the visible face of a self destructive society.
Their deranged anti-humanity drives and their sociopathic need to prey upon society rather than contribute to it are what is driven the most harm and has driven it for thousands of years. It is time to start isolating those genetically damaged individuals and prevent them from gaining positions of power, control and influence. Allow humanity to work together without that enormously destructive influence to achieve a more humane socially cohesive and supportive extended family.
We are a society a group not a swarm of mindless reptiles tearing at each other for a bigger piece of the prey, each other (let's leave that to the psychopaths and the narcissists).

I think any type of extremist thinking is dangerous, no matter what the cause is. Maybe a less extreme approach would be a more appropriate practice. just an opinion.

That is the PROBLEM with our society and that's why people are getting walked over. Mediocrity.
The only way to catalyze change is radicalism.
John Lennon was a radical, and he damn near changed the world, thank God.

The only problem with THIS is that most radicals are really, really immature.
The Tea Party is immature. Grow up and get creative.
You're acting like children throwing a tantrum.

Non-participation is effective if coupled with personal direct action. Don't acknowledge and play by their rules, but make up your own, and then go act on your own rule. This is not obvious to people who live on the principle of protesting.

It's not easy to see that the system has co-opted protesting. There are now free speech zones in which cordoned off participants are free to scream and rant all they want. You see, you can't get close to them. That has been foreclosed.

Voting is another way you simply contribute to their system - acknowledge their power - submit to their rules. So, stop doing it. But, you must replace it with your own will, your own desire and action. Don't submit, don't acknowledge, don't endorse (a protest is simply a negative endorsement).

Why exhaust your energy protesting? Use your energy to build your own system. Find one other person to cooperate with - trade with - help - mentor - or be helped or be mentored, or simply hold hands with. Your world is for you to build. Do whatever it was you wanted to do. Stop waiting for permissions that won't come. Rule changes that aren't going to happen. Everything you want, is actually right in front of you.

Recognize that historically the oppressed only change places with the oppressors. That doesn't solve anything. You want the anti-system, not a new system. That is created only by you directly - no other permissions are required or needed. There is no waiting.

I couldn't agree more. Nicely said. I was told something similar by an ex-harvard prof. and I got what he said, and met, and have tried to pass and articulate the idea along--but unsuccessfully so.

By acknowledging something, such as by rejecting it, you give power to it. Best to just ignore and not acknowledge....

As true as all of this may be, I don't see it catching on. It's a hard idea for a lot of people to conceptualize.
