Indian Independence Movement

Gandhi did not bring the British Empire down with cannons or armies that matched those of the imperial forces. He brought down the empire with a pinch of salt and a spinning wheel. When the British introduced the Salt Laws to tax salt, we undertook the Dandi March, picked up salt, and said, “Nature gives it free. We need it for our survival. We will continue to make our own salt. We will disobey the salt laws.”
When the Indian textile industry was being destroyed by the British, Gandhi did not call for the industrialization of India’s textiles. He pulled out a spinning wheel. He said, “Anything that millions can do together, becomes charged with power.”
Can we learn from history and catalyze change in the world today?

Name anyone who is flawless. And many people are worth mentioning; you can add their stories yourself without subtracting from Gandhi's contribution. What should we know?

there is a difference between mentioning somebody's flaws, when they are relevant to a person's strengths, and mentioning them simply to erode the heroic legacy of great people in history...
many people do this when thinking about Martin Luther King Jr. too.
i see in such people a weakness of character, and they find heroic acts of liberation threatening.
i have noticed that really great, interesting and courageous people always have heroes, whereas mediocre people rarely do.
Gandhi was brilliant, and i am hopeful we will see similar brilliance arise soon.
i am enjoying the adbusters acknowledgment of the many faces of revolution, it's an inspired direction.

the walls of the individual keep us in line, the walls of the government keep us scared. But the walls of humanity keep us free
