Person of the Year

The Person of the Year award is given to an individual who wields a massive social, environmental and economic impact.

The Person of the Year award is given to an individual who wields a massive social, environmental and economic impact. This year's recipient is none other than the first-world consumer, whose fantastic disregard for his surroundings is wreaking planetary havoc.

he might be potbellied or lean, his flat screen television holds no prejudice. He guzzles fossil fuels without giving it a thought – driving fantastic feats of automotive mastery four blocks to the liquor store.

numbskull stimulation comes easy to this fellow – he loads up on UFC matches, Mariah Carey and Maury Povich. This might be forgivable, if not for the copious amounts of energy he uses – some 40 times more than anyone in the developing world.

this person of the year loves the hamburgers. Loves ‘em. He’s a hog of epic proportions, often needing two chairs to support his girth. Should the current obesity epidemic continue, squadrons of gastropods in motorized carts will be rolling around local food courts.

ten million people starve to death around the world every year. Does the Person of the Year care? Perhaps, but as only as a passing notion, a fleeting sympathy sparked by an article in Reader’s Digest, which is then quelled by taking a warm bath.

this person ignores standard methods of contraception, spawning generations in his likeness and spoiling the gene pool for years to come. Kudos, Person of the Year, and good luck to you. You’re probably going to need it.

They're not calling out fools, yelahneb. They're just going for the easy target. It doesn't take much journalistic skill to point out a social train wreck. I'd expect more from Adbusters myself, as well. If I want jokes, I'll read The Onion.

Disappointed Reader

I feel that adbusters has seriously been slipping for the past few months. We don't get articles anymore, we get little graphic tidbits like this shit, which isn't relaly informing anyone about anything we haven't been told before. That's right. Adbusters has settled for telling us shit we already know, and not even in a unique way anymore.

What a cop out!! It is the same "Person of the Year" as last year. The Hamburger part made me chuckle a little-"Should the current obesity epidemic continue, squadrons of gastropods in motorized carts will be rolling around local food courts" but besides that, this was a shit piece. So what? I eat hamburgers, and I commute 84 minutes every day in my 2001 Honda Accord. Does that make me a bad person. No. Adbusters has been on a downslope recently, but reluctantly, I will still probably get the "Friend of the foundation" subscription.

Promoting the cult of personality, are we? That's really what the "Person of the Year" is all about. Ayn Rand touched on the theme - the importance of instilling hero-worship in young children. Heroes are needed - because that hero-worship can then be transferred to the political leader, in this model... the elites lead the proles to a new and better society. How many times have we heard that one? Sacrifice today for paradise tomorrow! Long live the Reich! So, I was expecting some kind of left-wing person of the year portrayal of some cult figure or other, sure, a nice enough person, maybe even inspiring, but still, the same old shit... so, pleasantly surprised was I.

Dear Adbusters, Don't exhaust your selling point. To elicit such guilt is righteous, but how many readers will really identify with this straw man? I know he's out there, but he's not reading. If he is reading, he's certainly not reading Adbusters. If you want change, demonize us complacent liberals. I'm getting tired of making my own guilt. That said, keep up the good work.
