The Fight Against Capitalism
DAVID DEGNER
While #OWS still encompasses within it a multiplicity of tactics, opinions, and degrees of political radicalism, the evidence is all too clear that the soul of Occupy is anticapitalist, and the desire for a different system is a desire for a protest movement whose grasp on our lives is more holistic. There has already been inspiring work done to organize in different communities, and one can envision the emergence of a dispersed network not only of general assemblies but of communes and cooperatives as well.
The old pessimism of theory beats at our backs, telling us that any developed and sustained form of communal organization can only exist as an autonomous pocket whose threat to capitalism is nil. Yet sustaining autonomous, communal forms of care is not a shift away from direct, active forms of resistance. The positive and the negative aspects of the fight against capitalism must work in conjunction with one another to mutually reinforce each other. Communes, cooperatives and other structures of social support provide a material safety net that facilitates more radical action, enabling people to strike from work and from debt obligations with the assurance that their material needs will be met when they do. Moreover, such forms of organization can begin the incredibly difficult process of building trust between those with radically different backgrounds and experiences, providing support for whoever needs it, especially those who have borne the brunt of the economic collapse.
These forms of organization will enervate the status quo by drawing participants’ time and energy away from their roles as wage laborers, salaried workers, and consumers. Of course, #OWS has already begun to do this; many of us without the luxury of highly flexible (read precarious) employment, or who haven’t already committed ourselves as full-time occupiers (and are now sleeping in churches, synagogues and generously offered private homes – and organizing during the day) already spend our office hours surreptitiously reading working group emails or occupy-related articles. Yet we aim to achieve a less schizophrenic mode of existence in which the totalizing effect of Occupy on our thoughts is reflected in the degree to which it predominates our actions, one in which our politics accords with the way in which we support ourselves. For those against capitalism this will mean testing our own boldness and examining our own perceived futures. As Daniel Marcus observed: “There can be no movement of communes if protest is merely an extracurricular activity of wage-earners: workers will have to choose whether they stand with the communes or with the bosses and administrators.”
The need for new structures of care is emotional as well as material. Many of us are beginning to realize the extent of our own dissatisfaction. We spend time with friends and lovers, but these encounters are transitory counterpoints to the anomie induced by a culture of individualism. We work towards success, but what constitutes success seems increasingly empty. Perhaps it’s unfashionable to speak of “alienation,” naïve to make claims about what forms of work or activities might begin to overcome it, utopian to believe that we could create a society in which a better life is possible. And yet we already see the possibility of these things in the near future of this movement and are already beginning to build the necessary infrastructure.
Affect isn’t just an effect, but a decisive tool of revolution. Just as the catharsis of resistance we experienced in the fall bolstered community and emboldened us to go further, more communal, self-sustaining and holistic instantiations of Occupy will further entrench and strengthen the movement. We are strongest when our resistance draws on our outrage but also harnesses our vital forces, extending to the very material and psychological basis of our lives.
In the spring we must rediscover together that there are militant kinds of community and insurrectionary forms of care.

Yep, right wing communism failed. Big shocker.
ProudAmericanCo...

PS. I forgot to mention the school teachers you had teaching you that the rest of the world owes you a living and there is "No God"! Good luck with that one come judgement day!!!

>1. LEFT LEANING ORGANIZATIONS HAVE TO BE REVIVED.
And Occupy isn't a "LEFT LEANING ORGANIZATION"?
>2. USURY HAS TO BE OUTLAWED, SO THAT MONEY ITSELF DOES NOT MAKE MORE MONEY.
It's already outlawed; we just need to determine to what degree. Also there's all sorts of financial wizardry you can do to make money from more money. In fact, lending money creates money from thin air.
>3. NEW INCOME TAX POLICY HAS TO BE DEVELOPED TO LIMIT INCOME BY INCREASING TAX WITH INCREASING INCOME. FOR EXAMPLE THE TOP TAX RATE MAY BE 90% FOR INCOME ABOVE FIVE MILLION A YEAR.
Income tax only goes so far. We still need to cover taxes on inheritance, capital gains, etc. Steve Jobs, for example, worked for a dollar a year and he could still afford a private jet.
>4. AN YEARLY TAX WILL HAVE TO BE IMPOSED ON ACCUMULATED WEALTH ITSELF. FOR EXAMPLE 5% PER YEAR ON ACCUMULATED WEALTH BEYOND SOME VALUE.
That will just encourage people to either spend it or hide it in the Cayman islands.

Also. This begs the question: as big businesses are in bed with politicians, what would be accomplished by taxing the wealthy at such a high rate? Don't get me wrong, I am all for limits on income - the money some people have in this country is absurd and unnecessary. But our government doesn't use this money for infrastructure, proper education and worthwhile critical training, social services, etc. The government uses this money to pay big businesses to produce things - thus entering into a cycle. For example (to be a cynic) raising taxes on the wealthy would only give the government more money to spend on paying private military corporations to fund our 'defense' and 'security' etc..
So, what is the course to take? I agree that taxing the super-wealthy is necessary to recirculate the excess capital that is just sitting in disuse; but the government hasn't necessarily proved reliable or trustworthy in managing that extra money. The legislation that determines what to use the money for is carried out by politicians who are bought out by corporate lobbyists, therefore influencing the lawmakers to write laws that benefit the corporations, and not using the money to truly benefit society.

My solutions may be a little different but I think you're pretty much correct.
Adbusters does what it does, I'm afraid I gave up buying it some years ago but to claim to speak for 'the soul' of the 'Occupy Movement' is frankly quite galling.
Occupy can only do anything with the very broad support of a large number of 'the 99.9%' and I'll be fairly sure that if properly researched most of those 99.9% don't want to know about Anti-Capitalism, they just want fair reward for their hard work in a country which helps nurture their children.

Are you advocating violence???
You better pray our country does not go into a civil war!!! Because if we do... You will know what it is like to live in North Korea or Cuba! Because if we (America) is taken over by another (Or several countries) Country, you will understand why Our forfathers came here (the USA) to build a free society!!!
I for one pray I will never have to fire a shot at a fellow American!!!
Mamdu
Why have we not OCCUPIED the Federal Reserve building?
It will have to be destroyed along with all criminals that occupy it.

Dude, the Tea Party SHOULD be helping us do that, but they listen to these people who just complain and demonize liberals and Occupy and try to lump them in together with terrorists and demons. It would be awesome to protest at the Federal Reserve, but teh Tea Party just won't help anyone but themselves.
ProudAmericanCo...
I have to say something else... I am a Tea Party Member and "We are NOT Racist" Nor are we Idiots! "Main Stream Media" are playing you like a fiddle. I hear the 99% talking about their fair share... but The real issues here are Iran building a Nuke Bomb, and they have every intention of shoot a nuke Missile Aim at the USA... If that does not scare the hell out of you I do not know what does??? The People want to KILL US!!! and our families!!! There is no talking sense to people who are incapable of rational thought. The reason we never got Kahdafi and those other dictators before is because we knew the middle east would become a world power and then want to Send Nukes over here and KILL US!!!
You are being played like pawns in a chess game and you are unaware.
Listen we are all Americans and have to stand united against an oppressive regime and against people in the world who want to kill Americans!!!
Many of us on the right understand what you want, hell we are ALL Americans and WE are ALL Hurting financially!!! We do not like hearing Police cars getting crapped on, Constitutional rights being taken away, Disrespecting America (The Country we love (Many of us have died in wars protecting your right to protest)), We extend a hand to you and the Occupy Movement to see and understand what the "Tea Party Movement" Is really about. Not what channel 4,5 or 7 tell we are... This is mear propaganda for the criminals that run our Government to be re-elected. Remember "United We Stand, Devided We fall",
Another thought... What will American look like after Capitalism is dead???
Ask yourseld these questions:
1) Where will the money come from to take care of my family is business fails? You do not really think Government will give you any do you??? Why would they???
2) What would you do if Government told you one day they are not going to give you anymore health care because you can no longer add to society? so they just let you die (Or your son / daughter)
3)Who will stop Russia from coming here andtaking over America and installing their Government? Or another Country from telling you what you can and cannot read or watch???
Man you guys... Saul Alinsky's rules have been used against "you and us" You think you are using it against wall street??? Wake up and look behind you... Jeese!

Fools. It isn't about a group of the hippies from the local co op gathering around now is it? It's groups of people of all stripes from around the country who are tired of our culture obsession with materialism and wish for a wide scale change. This is beyond politics, it is beyond your poor understanding of current events; it is beyond american pride and the misguided belief that anybody is doing anything for positive change. And go ahead. Get offended, take this as a personal insult. But until it is understood that the "grind", our soulless entrapment in a circular maze of constant unhappiness in the hopes of getting that next promotion is utterly crushing then no progress will be made. Why should a small group of people control the lives of millions? Why should they be the sole determining factor in what type of lifestyles, no, lives that these people live? Do telemarketers really enjoy working 8-10 hours a day doing what they do? Do the people unfortunate enough to be employed at wallmart strike you as generally happy people? Do the people who pick up your trash smile and greet you, maybe go out of their way to shake your hand and thank you for being a consumerist? Would you shake their hand even if they did? It's about an end to the rat race, about taking the influential power of money out of decision making. Obviously a country that continues to spend money in a baseless war against an ideology instead of investing it into the educational system, and letting the aforementioned school system fall into shambles is doing the right thing. Obviously a country willing to do something as appalling as sourcing students from around the world so that it can claim it has the brightest and best minds in the world is on the right track. An entire population willing to learn yet are unable to do so due to monetary constrictions is correct on all accounts. As western civilization crashes what does that prove about the stability and wisdom of our decision making? Z
