Junk Thought
What is pollution?
In the 14th century, pollution had an exclusively spiritual and immaterial meaning. Back then, to pollute meant to desecrate or contaminate what is sacred, such as one's soul or moral sensibility. Not until the late 19th century did pollution take on the scientific and materialist connotation it has today.
Tragically, with the changing meaning of ‘pollution,’ we've become increasingly concerned about contamination of our external, natural environment, while ignoring the desecration of our internal, mental environment.
Although you would never intentionally ingest poison, many of us continue to consume toxic information and visual pollution everyday, thousands of times per day.
Advertising is an info-toxin, a symbolic pollutant that targets our mental environment.
Junk food makes us obese, but junk thoughts and advertisements may harm us more. Unlike fast food, whose consumption is always intentional, fast thoughts hit us unawares.
Walking down the street, our eyes devour billboards whose carefully crafted imagery hit us on a subconscious, spiritual level. We are poisoned by each ad.
Concern over the mental environment isn’t new. Generations ago, the French writer Emile Zola wrote the satirical short story, “Death by Advertising” as a warning. It describes the swift decline of Pierre Landry, a naïve believer in the claims made by advertisers.
Throughout his life, Pierre suffered hardship because he bought whatever advertisers told him was best.
He overpaid for a paper-thin mansion on swampland, lost his hair because of a tonic and suffered health problems from popping pharmaceutical pills.
Pierre organized his bookshelves based on sales rank, reading only the newspaper reviews and the back cover of a book to discover what he ought to think about it.
Losing his ability to think critically and full of half-formed ideas inherited from the ads he saw, Pierre, poisoned by advertising, died a moron’s death.
Today, we are all Pierre Landry. Advertising has poisoned our minds, corrupted our culture and turned us away from the noble pursuits of virtue, wisdom and the stewardship of nature.
Now, we seek only the ephemeral pleasures of consumerism: new gadgets and twit thoughts.
Advertising obscures our vision, preventing us from seeing that because of our over-consumption, our civilization is marching toward ecological collapse.
Now we must gather the strength to launch an insurrection against corporate communication. Only then will a movement to protect our mental environment catch flame.
This video is the result of a collaboration between the visionary artists at Smart Bubble Society and Micah White, Contributing Editor at Adbusters.

The greatest damage created by this mental pollution that we speak of is towards the youth....Especially immigrant youth who are stuck in two worlds, that of their parents and family and that of the consumerist culture. The two cultures often collide creating a gap between generations and a whole slew of economic, social, mental, cultural problems.

You are missing the point - we are NOT living in a diverse society where people are free to make those choices based on intellect and investigation. We exist in a state of monopoly formation which has enabled a select few to manage major media sources and product creation. In this 'post-capitalist' world (one void of any real competition) we lay victims to the billionaire club who can construct what we learn in school, manipulate our dollar value, kill off political leaders, send us to war and have it all sponsored by Coke.

Look around you, this is an incredibly diverse society to the likes of which have never been seen before.
I can watch CNN, Al Jazeera, BBC, Comedy Central or even Infowars if I so chose. A world of information is literally at our fingertips. I can eat Chinese, Indian, Italian, or home cooked food. I can drink bottled water or use my Brita filter. I can play Nintendo or Playstation, or on my computer, or I can read any book I please. I can buy Nikes, Blackspots, or a nice pair of dress shoes. I can buy a shirt at Sears or I can buy one at American Eagle, or a local thrift store. I can chose how to invest in my future by going to university, or getting an aprenticeship or going straight into a career. I can send my child to private school, or public school, or home school. I can chose how to particpate in my community in a great many ways.
I have choices. I am an indivdual and I understand I must take responsibiliy for my own actions, instead of trying to blame it on some grand brainwashing scheme. I went through the same system as all my peers and we all turned out different.
Diversity is literally all around us. I don't know how anyone can miss it.

To anonymous, you can boycott coke and pepsi, totally. Bring your own bottled water (in plastic} or whatever, we can boycott all of it!

It is unfair to judge people across cyber space but I believe you have'nt been searching for hard, prooven facts. Men greater than you and me have devoted their entire lives just to find one bit of factual stability. I am not a scholar, I'm an artist from London, so my views are suspect rather than proven pieces of evidence.
Adbusters has shown that a businessman can indirectly buy any part of the human body.
Intellectuals have shown that a vote on a piece of paper can hand over the scepter to any multitude of billionares who could ensure the future genocide of our grand children. The iraq war began because of powerful men not because it was just high time there was a war.
Cheap newspapers have shown that there are men, (names omitted) who can brainwash entire nations these days.
Mathamatic equations can now show that our actions, our thoughts and our personalitions can be completely determined by outside influences.
There are entire generations who are afraid of silence - 'this I believe really is true'. These generations are actually afraid of silent meditation and they don't even know what meditation is. It is a rare moment of mental freedom in these dark times.
Ther are entire generations completely deprived of dreams.
Diversity is a very very vague term and ideal. It is expoited by individuals from the neo-liberal to the far right - facsist sensibilities. Dubai was built via liberal laws and it is controlled by conservatives. It has a vast workforce of Indian slaves.
An industrial world means that EVERYTHING within it's sphere can be industrial, including conspiracy.
