War Crimes Trials?

Activists attempt to bring charges against the Israeli leadership in the international court system.

Bracing for a onslaught of international lawsuits, Israeli officials responsible for ordering and executing the Gaza offensive are now facing the very real possibility of being arrested and tried for war crimes in the ICC. An activist site launched from within Israel has issued arrest warrants for Tzipi Livni, Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak and urges anyone who has knowledge of the suspects’ plans for international travel to immediately contact The Hague. The age of Israeli impunity seems to be giving way to a harsh new reality.

Sure. But whatever you do, make sure that the Hamas and Fatah leaders who ordered the suicide bombings of civilians don't get arrested. Make sure that the leaders who order the deaths of 700,000 innocents in Sudan are regarded as less bad than Israeli leaders. Make sure that nobody lifts a finger to prosecute the military leaders in the Congo who have killed nearly 2 million, and perpetrated tens of thousands of rapes and instances of torture. Most importantly, always make sure that Israel's actions are more closely watched than any other country's on the planet. Don't investigate Russia or China's murder of opposition leaders. Forget about Myanmar. Ignore women's rights in the middle east. Obviously, Israel is worse than all of these things put together. Why else would you devote so much time to them?

Are you f-ing kidding? Sound points on other atrocities in the world but to say that Israel is "watched more than any other country" is nothing short of absurd.

'make sure hamas and fatah leaders are not arrested' ? why bother - when it's quicker to assasinate. and anyway - what about the thousands already jailed in israel -un-charged, illegally. what about the 60 years [since 48] of occupation, massacre, racism, checkpoint, blockade, humiliation, hypocrisy - the palestinians have been forced to endure. why are they called 'terrorists' every time they resist? why has israel been allowed to ignore dozens of un rulings for decades. what about some basic justice here? its just a rich country beating up the poor, normal business practise right? very little to do with religion at all - just class and corruption and exploitaion -\taking over water rights, productive land- vantage points - all while claming victim status. all while claiming immunity to any' all criticism. it makes me sick. its apartheid s.africa all over again.

I'm not defending Israel's terrible actions. Repeat: terrible actions. I am saying that there is a disproportionate focus on the bad things that they do, which takes attention away from worse things that other people do. When 14,000 are murdered in Sri Lanka, no one is outraged. When 140,000 are killed in Darfur, no one is outraged. When 1,400,000 are killed in the Congo, no one is outraged. Saddened, yes, so they may give to charities, but not outraged and calling for war crimes trials. When 1,400 are killed in Gaza, you get the greatest international outcry heard in a long while. Its hypocritical in the long run.

"why are they called ‘terrorists’ every time they resist?" Because their actions meet the dictionary definition of terrorism to a T. That Israel's actions meet the definition of Oppression does not negate that fact. It is very much like apartheid in S. Africa, so we had better hope that it ends better for them than it did there. S. Africa enjoyed a few years as a beacon of human rights justice after Apartheid ended, but they quickly succumbed to self-rightiousness. They are now the primary defender and enabler of Robert Mugabe, as he continues to starve and oppress his people (another example of a situation still more horrific that Gaza).
