Tactical Turning Point
JESUS G. PASTOR
Hey you nimble dreamers, occupiers, believers,
Last May 15, a hundred thousand indignados in Spain seized the squares across their nation, held people’s assemblies and catalyzed a global tactical shift that birthed Occupy Wall Street four months later. Our movement outflanked governments everywhere with a thousand encampments in large part because no one was prepared for Occupy’s magic combination of Spain’s transparent consensus-based acampadas with the Tahrir-model of indefinite occupation of symbolic space. Now exactly a year later, a big question mark hangs over our movement because it is clear that the same tactics may never work again.
Spring re-occupations have largely failed here in North America. The May Day General Strike was stifled by aggressive, preemptive policing that neutralized Occupy’s signature moves. In light of these challenges, Saturday’s May 12 rebirth of the indignados could be a tactical turning point.
Across the world, authorities are using “lawfare” to piecemeal outlaw any tactic that we used last year. In Spain, there is an attempt to criminalize the use of the internet to catalyze nonviolent protests and occupations. The International Business Times reports that this is part of a larger European move to “punish those who use social media and instant messaging to organize and co-ordinate street protests.” Canada wants to ban wearing masks at “unlawful assemblies,” a legal designation often used to disperse nonviolent protesters. Meanwhile Germany is taking a more direct route: they have simply issued a decree “banning” the Blockupy anti-bank protest in Frankfurt. As in the U.S., when outlawing free speech and the right to assembly doesn’t work, authorities are increasingly using brutal, paramilitary force.
The power of Occupy lies in its ability to harness the collective intelligence of our leaderless movement to tactically innovate. We move at viral speed – always one step ahead. “Fight, fail, fight again, fail again, fight again… till victory.” When one tactical constellation fails, we innovate spontaneously – we play jazz.
Across the world, indignados are preparing for a big blast on Saturday, May 12. Some, like Occupy London, are planning to retake the squares and set up encampments. Others have totally new tactics in mind. Whatever happens, let’s learn from the indignados with an eye towards our Camp David inspired May 18 #LAUGHRIOT and the global convergence on Chicago to confront NATO …
Let’s be humble … let’s “fall in love with hard and patient work” – and keep in mind that this is all just the beginning.
for the wild,

Makes me wonder if the International Banking Cartels are funding Occupy the same way they funded Communism.
We need new words everyday to demonstrate how badly we'd like to get rid of the secret government Capitalist Class.

Here is 10 solid hours of jazz. Its just what you need to dream awake. Its all you will ever need, actually you might want to throw your laptop against the wall after the first 22 seconds. But up until then totally radical up until that point.

Where there is scarcity real or imaged, money becomes raw power. As such private concentrations of money or power need some limits in the way that state power needs limits
The point of a progressive taxation structure is the loop hole. The loophole is a way of making sure that socially reponsible things are done with money. People can still do socially irresponsible things with money its just that the scale is greatly reduced.
Another point is to make sure there is quality demand. It may be possible to automate out a portion of society and leave others under in place rules to fend for themselves but that naturally leads to instablity, its unsustainable or not worth the obvious risk of finding out.
The nature of work matters. If work does not resemble play, exercise and study then it’s a waste of human potential and we are not getting what we could out of societies. If there is not minimal coercion at work there is a lack of real justice and liberty and it bleeds into every aspect of a society so it it lacking generally. It also drives up sickness, addiction and the rate of broken families. Change the rules that govern work also makes it easier to accommodate displacement by automation.
Why increase wages and focus on reducing profits? Its not such a backwards question. Surely the proper form of society is not merely a system that accretes coercive power. As some have said the purpose of one of the main productive units, the firm became maximizing ROE, we now have a might makes right society as money in the system is surely power. Do we really have more Thomas Edison’s or do we have more rent seeking. It seems tax code would recognize the difference.
Also what of true cost accounting. It is time to account for costs the best we can on the front end. In part this means recognizing the contribution of the family.
With a true cost accounting it seems that a policy focus on increasing fosil fuel spending and defense spending just leads to war and war that is more likely to be nuclear. In the case of natural gas it leads to making water unaffordable which again leads to war. Further a concentration on these maximum property claim areas leads to economic royalty which likely leads to civil war and a bloody end to present elites.
Also think of the current check against real democracy at a time when real social mobility is dwindling. As it is under commercial driven media or purely sponsorship driven media, which from a true cost perspective steals people’s time and attention or adicts them so that pay for the theft- under this system only power can be heard. It takes money to be heard. So only those with power can keep power or acquire more of it This is a might makes right media system as a filter on democratic power. Again its something that drives instability.
There is only so much instability a society can handle before investment confidence is shattered. Right now we have one overlappin mutual fund after another investing in the same small set of firms without any regard for business fundamentals. In many cases firms have no incentive to do the right thing even with regard to performance and competitiveness. We also have huge rent seeking industries that are essentially built around fraud that are supposedly too big to fail or even to big to change and in essence demand to grow a non contributing base of fraud at the expense to the rest of the economy. This will break our numbers system and force us to admit that GDP and GNP are flawed measures that need to give way to measures that better account for quality of life and true costs on both an efficience and effectiveness level. Economics has become a fundamentalists religion and that approach needs to be abolished to prevent un inquisition under business.
