Tactical Briefing #25: Showdown in Chicago

This article is available in:

Hey you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

Against the backdrop of a global uprising that is simmering in dozens of countries and thousands of cities and towns, the G8 and NATO will hold a rare simultaneous summit in Chicago this May. The world’s military and political elites, heads of state, 7,500 officials from 80 nations, and more than 2,500 journalists will be there.

And so will we.

On May 1, 50,000 people from all over the world will flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month. With a bit of luck, we’ll pull off the biggest multinational occupation of a summit meeting the world has ever seen.

And this time around we’re not going to put up with the kind of police repression that happened during the Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago, 1968 … nor will we abide by any phony restrictions the City of Chicago may want to impose on our first amendment rights. We’ll go there with our heads held high and assemble for a month-long people’s summit … we’ll march and chant and sing and shout and exercise our right to tell our elected representatives what we want … the constitution will be our guide.

And when the G8 and NATO meet behind closed doors on May 19, we’ll be ready with our demands: a Robin Hood Tax … a ban on high frequency ‘flash’ trading … a binding climate change accord … a three strikes and you’re out law for corporate criminals … an all out initiative for a nuclear-free Middle East … whatever we decide in our general assemblies and in our global internet brainstorm – we the people will set the agenda for the next few years and demand our leaders carry it out.

And if they don’t listen … if they ignore us and put our demands on the back burner like they’ve done so many times before … then, with Gandhian ferocity, we’ll flashmob the streets, shut down stock exchanges, campuses, corporate headquarters and cities across the globe … we’ll make the price of doing business as usual too much to bear.

Jammers, pack your tents, muster up your courage and prepare for a big bang in Chicago this Spring. If we don’t stand up now and fight now for a different kind of future we may not have much of a future … so let’s live without dead time for a month in May and see what happens …

for the wild,

Violence is a kick used to awake people from apathetic comas. So enjoy you American Dream while you can, you're about to wake up.

well when a policeman asked me that about 30 years ago, I answered "I thought it stood for Proud, Integrity, and Guts.

Whew!

P.S.

There is no legal excuse to kick the snot out of anyone, be they a moron or not. You do yourself nor your fellow officers any good by advocating violence.

Also, and I love to disappoint you, no one is going there to bring violence upon the police. If you have been following the news of the past year you would realize that it has been the police that have been the worst offenders of violence against their fellow citizens.

Or do you think it noble to gas and club people sitting peacefully arm in arm on the ground just for refusing to obey your comand to disperse?

You are so manly. Oh, so manly it is to beat the non-violent, eh? Is that how you get your jollies? Get yer wood by being mean?

It is easy to be mean. Any idiot can do it.

"Also, and I love to disappoint you, no one is going there to bring violence upon the police."

Don't be so naive. There are professional anarchists who attend every large event like the G8 and NATO summits. They live for this stuff, swooping in to cause mayhem and destruction and infiltrating peaceful demonstrations. They will be among those of you who consider themselves peaceful protestors. If you took action to keep these people in check then the police wouldn't be so quick to respond violently. Police your own ranks and things will go much smoother for you. If left unchecked, the violent anarchists will be met with violence from the police.

snort, but I guess we won't be actually seeing you, yourself dropping us off in your Gangsta hoods? Yes, Chicago is the only place with that kind of situation. Snort.

Real Occupiers will not do any harm to your city. If any other assholes do, they deserve to go to jail. They are not part of OWS, though by default being 99% of the population means they and you, are all part of the 99%.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I am suppose to write a paper for school and the professor asked me to read through the adbuster site, read through it and list and briefly outline five principal ethical arguments made by the authors of adbusters. To be completely honest, I can not find any ethical arguments being made... can someone help me?

Don't take this as me asking for something without working for it, that would be crazy to think I deserve something for being lazy. I am just really unsure, ethically, what the Occupy Wall Street movement is about.

you can write a paper about "Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: Thinking About the Fundamentals" as was written by Robert L. Helvey http://www.aeinstein.org/organizations/org/OSNC.pdf in which, for example, the admonition is made: "Nonviolent struggle is more, much more, than a demonstration of discontent."

Helvey, one of Gene Sharp's experienced students, makes statements on "Methods of Nonviolent Action" that include "Protest and Persuasion", "Noncooperation", & "Intervention". Imagine: Indirect attacks such as clogging public transportation with 20-50,000 passengers going into neighborhoods & The Loop for the purpose of providing community services like street cleaning that would also impact transportation by impeding traffic would also dare Rahm's Regime to harass civic-minded-good-persons-who-are-generous-in-helping-those-in-distress in a show the main-stream-media would not want to blackout. ( Re: Gene Sharp http://occupywallst.org/forum/gene-sharp-owss-leader/ ).

Actions are good if they weather & erode 1%-Rahmie's Pillars of Support like seniors, youth, police, religious organizations, civil servants, etc. Having a 1968 part two or Battle of Seattle Episode 2 is a terrible idea. Of course many young people will be weakly or strongly attracted to such a romantic adventure but lots of pre-action briefing, training, grooming can subdue part of that immaturity. CTU, AFT, NEA, AFSCME, maybe even Police or Fire unions, church youth ministries, etc. might like having some evening or weekend training/mentoring sessions for teen & young adult Occupiers through March and April before the main event in May. Some classroom teachers could assign essays, projects, recipes, travel itineraries, etc. that can foreshadow a productive Strategic Nonviolent Conflict action around G-8 -- NATO summit month.

Who are the "natural enemies" of the 1%-Rahmie group? (Examples: repressed minorities, disaffected youth, the unemployed, workers, the political parties, the lower, middle or maybe even upper classes, etc.) Is there any potential or actual support or sympathy for the nonviolent struggle Occupy Chicago group from within sectors of the 1%-Rahmie group itself? (Examples: repressed minorities of police & fire unionized and disaffected workers such as LGBT staff.) What is the organizational structure of the 1%-Rahmie group (administration, organizational branches, complexity, efficiency, reliability, degree of initiative, degree of centralized controls, etc.)? What is the 1%-Rahmie group's military capacity? Necessary information includes the following: [list] (1)-Strength, number, size, structure, and types of units; (2)-Locations of units; etc. http://wtpnet.mayfirst.org/node/17

Hope this helps you figure out a topic & format for the paper or art project or whatever. :)
