Tactical Briefing #25: Showdown in Chicago

This article is available in:

Hey you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

Against the backdrop of a global uprising that is simmering in dozens of countries and thousands of cities and towns, the G8 and NATO will hold a rare simultaneous summit in Chicago this May. The world’s military and political elites, heads of state, 7,500 officials from 80 nations, and more than 2,500 journalists will be there.

And so will we.

On May 1, 50,000 people from all over the world will flock to Chicago, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and #OCCUPYCHICAGO for a month. With a bit of luck, we’ll pull off the biggest multinational occupation of a summit meeting the world has ever seen.

And this time around we’re not going to put up with the kind of police repression that happened during the Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago, 1968 … nor will we abide by any phony restrictions the City of Chicago may want to impose on our first amendment rights. We’ll go there with our heads held high and assemble for a month-long people’s summit … we’ll march and chant and sing and shout and exercise our right to tell our elected representatives what we want … the constitution will be our guide.

And when the G8 and NATO meet behind closed doors on May 19, we’ll be ready with our demands: a Robin Hood Tax … a ban on high frequency ‘flash’ trading … a binding climate change accord … a three strikes and you’re out law for corporate criminals … an all out initiative for a nuclear-free Middle East … whatever we decide in our general assemblies and in our global internet brainstorm – we the people will set the agenda for the next few years and demand our leaders carry it out.

And if they don’t listen … if they ignore us and put our demands on the back burner like they’ve done so many times before … then, with Gandhian ferocity, we’ll flashmob the streets, shut down stock exchanges, campuses, corporate headquarters and cities across the globe … we’ll make the price of doing business as usual too much to bear.

Jammers, pack your tents, muster up your courage and prepare for a big bang in Chicago this Spring. If we don’t stand up now and fight now for a different kind of future we may not have much of a future … so let’s live without dead time for a month in May and see what happens …

for the wild,

Because they are not from your community and are not going to do your job helping your community, they have been doing that in their communities as much as possible with what little resources and man power they have. The reason they are going to the G8 is purely a show of force, a publicity stunt if you will.

Why the hell would they flock in from all around the country to clean up your city, that is moronic.

This wonderful idea is an application of Strategic Nonviolent Conflict: Thinking About the Fundamentals by Robert L. Helvey http://www.aeinstein.org/organizations/org/OSNC.pdf in which, for example, the admonition is made: "Nonviolent struggle is more, much more, than a demonstration of discontent."

Helvey, one of Gene Sharp's experienced students, makes statements on "Methods of Nonviolent Action" that include "Protest and Persuasion", "Noncooperation", & "Intervention". The last 3 paragraphs of the opinion/idea above is on point. Indirect attacks such as clogging public transportation with 20-50,000 passengers going into neighborhoods & The Loop for the purpose of providing community services like street cleaning that would also impact transportation by impeding traffic would also dare Rahm's Regime to harass civic-minded-good-persons-who-are-generous-in-helping-those-in-distress in a show the main-stream-media would not want to blackout. ( Re: Gene Sharp http://occupywallst.org/forum/gene-sharp-owss-leader/ ).

Actions are good if they weather & erode 1%-Rahmie's Pillars of Support like seniors, youth, police, religious organizations, civil servants, etc. Having a 1968 part two or Battle of Seattle Episode 2 is a terrible idea. Of course many young people will be weakly or strongly attracted to such a romantic adventure but lots of pre-action briefing, trainiong, grooming can subdue part of that. CTU, AFT, NEA, AFSCME, maybe even Police or Fire unions might like having some evening or weekend training/mentoring sessions for teen & young adult Occupiers through March and April before the main event in May.

Who are the "natural enemies" of the 1%-Rahmie group? (Examples: repressed minorities, disaffected youth, the unemployed, workers, the political parties, the lower, middle or maybe even upper classes, etc.) Is there any potential or actual support or sympathy for the nonviolent struggle Occupy Chicago group from within sectors of the 1%-Rahmie group itself? (Examples: repressed minorities of police & fire unionized and disaffected workers such as LGBT staff.) What is the organizational structure of the 1%-Rahmie group (administration, organizational branches, complexity, efficiency, reliability, degree of initiative, degree of centralized controls, etc.)? What is the 1%-Rahmie group's military capacity? Necessary information includes the following: [list] (1)-Strength, number, size, structure, and types of units; (2)-Locations of units; etc. http://wtpnet.mayfirst.org/node/17

I think they are going to be there for the entire month, so I am sure that these ideas will be used. I doubt though that they will just ignore the Summit. However, your ideas are wonderful, positive and exactly the way Occupy thinks about things.

Hope to see you there!

Except they didn't consult with Chicago before making this post, and they are presuming to speak for the entire movement.

There are a lot of different versions of Occupy out there and some of them don't think a huge distracting act of protest theater is the way forward.

This announcement is clearly aimed at those with the luxury to be activist tourists.

For those of us with jobs or struggling to get by, traveling to another city for a month to mix it up with the cops is not the best way to move forward. It's not the way to reach the majority of the 99% who are looking for answers closer to home.

Why is Adbusters pouring it's clout and money into something which has been done at every G8 summit and is old news. At this point it's just another sideshow in the G8 media circus. It's a distraction and if there is violence or a riot it will be used to dismiss the entire movement.

At the very least you should be talking about how to avoid a repeat of 1968. Adbusters, this is a very irresponsible and elitist response.

You all are a joke.

Come to Chicago....we won't lock you up in Jail.

We will drive you to Englewood and drop you off in the middle of Latin King or Maniac Gangster Disciples territory.

Come to Chicago....swing at a cop and end up in the hospital or Dead.

This isn't going to be a mis-handled event like 68.

We have 10k plus police officers that are pissed off and are looking for any legal excuse to kick the snot out of a moron.

He's also absolutely right. Come to Chicago, get your ass kicked. Who's going to protect you? Who's going to stop them? What are you going to do about it? What are you going to get out of it? Nothing! How many bad policies will be stopped by you getting your ass kicked? None! In fact it'll just prove to the police that they have permission to kick hippie ass and there will be no consequences.

I'm afraid that kind of tactic will only cause your fair city to lose massive money in the legal suits that will follow.
We bring peace, you suggest violence.
