TACTICAL BRIEFING #19

Our Existential Moment.

This article is available in:

Hey jammers, dreamers, believers,

Here is a testimony from the streets of New York:

Lost my stuff, including power cord for my laptop, in the raid, something or someone cleared out my bank account, and it's raining. I could just write a country song. I'll tell you this: the resolve is still here. People I talk to are a healthy mixture of rage, comedy, resolve, and excitement. Also exhaustion. Maybe the raid was the best thing that could happen? I worry about the inevitable suffering that will occur in the cold now, and how it will be used to clear any encampment again. But there must be something like a people's library and kitchen. A physical heart. More soon. Must find money and charge my phone. Winning at last, winning at last, thank God Almighty, we are winning at last…

Our movement is living through an existential, make-or-break moment.

This is a tactical way of looking at it:

When Tunisia rose up, Ben Ali scoffed … when young people occupied Tahrir Square, Mubarak resorted to paternalism and then mob violence … in Syria, Assad's troops fire daily into the crowds. And on Tuesday, a military style assault on Zuccotti Park – news blackouts, tear gas, closed airspace, an LRAD "sound cannon" – was carried out in the dead of night to take out our movement's spiritual home.

For many weeks we had a kind of magic going for us … we held the high ground … we stuck doggedly to our Gandhian ways and blindsided the cynical world with our optimism, our camaraderie, our nonviolence, our determination to forge a different kind of future. With nothing more than twinkling fingers, mic checks, mutual respect, and hope for the future, we sparked a global democracy moment the likes of which the world had not seen since 1968.

But New York's billionaire Mayor decided to snuff us out. We wanted a Tahrir Moment, an American Spring, and he attacked us in the middle of the night while we slept. These kinds of attacks on peaceful protestors did not work in Tunisia, not in Egypt, they are not working in Syria right now, and – wake up Bloomberg & Co! – they are not going to work in America either.

This assault has stiffened our resolve. Now begins the second, visceral, canny, militant phase of our nonviolent march to real democracy. We regroup, lick our wounds and begin our counterattack as early as tomorrow.

We will turn this winter into a training ground for precision disruptions – flashmobs, stink bombs, edgy theatrics – against the megacorps and the unrepentant 1%, a festival of resistance in the snow with, or without, an encampment that'll lay the tactical foundation for our Spring Offensive.

The bottom line is this … you cannot attack your young and get away with it!

for the wild,
Culture Jammers HQ

The actual people occuyping spaces are working for us; protesting for us. And they are still people with all the same foibles and fears and basic needs. After a short while - maybe within minutes - groups will form and organize. IT IS OUR NATURE.

The key to a successful organization is the degree of co-operation between the members: will it be a command-and-control group or a more of a harmonious group. For insight into the consequence of group structure on the individual watch KILLER STRESS (National Geographic) where an important discovery was made regarding group dynamics in baboons.

Alphas dominate groups and make subordiates sick and ill; dominated groups are miserable. One tribe of baboonsm accidentally lost all their alphas in one go (the alphas raided a hotel garbage dump, got ill and died). Guess what, the betas took over and the group thrived. All the members got healthier, lived longer and were happier. The betas rejected any new members who demonstrated alpha qualities. This group has been thriving like this for 15 years and it still going strong.

We need to dump our ALPHAS now.

You forgot to point out that our present utopia is full of war, violence, death, suicide, drugs, corruption, greed, inequality, racism, apathy, animal abuse, child abuse, psychological abuse, advertisements, shopping, working, AND EVEN DEATH. That is our present Utopia you are desperately hanging onto. Keep hoping nothing changes! Btw, what is your organization, how long have you been fighting the good fight, how many people have you organized, how many criminals have you put behind bars, what bank fees have you forced banks to cancel through protest, where is all your television coverage and what is your organizations website?

The closest thing to war in this country is the war the OWS people are waging in the streets. The violence is worst in the most democrat heavy places. Death is inevitable, but through capitalism, medical companies keep working for cures to diseases , including the pills I take every day to stay alive since they removed a tumor from my neck with radiation. Inequality is life, except under the law, where we are equal.

Shopping and working....just modern day versions of hunting and gathering...it's what to do to live and eat, silly.

In my utopia, I am free. Free to fail or free to make a better life for myself. I have had ups and downs, I've been homeless and now I live in a very nice house and drive a decent jeep to work every day. There are people who don't have what I have, that stinks, but it's not my fault. There are people who have more than I do...that's awesome, I need rich people to give me jobs. I don't resent them, I need them to hire me. I hope to keep climbing the ladder so I can hire people some day. In this utopia, at least I have the freedom to try.

As for the rest, racism, animal abuse, child abuse, etc.....Dude, all that stuff sucks. I hate every shred of it, but I can honestly say that through freedom we will find the solutions to those issues.

Finally, as a former Soldier and Military Police Officer....yeah, I have done my part to put the bad guys behind bars, protect the defenseless, to keep the wolves at bay so that you have had the freedom to bang your drum.

Bang on, man.

First: the drumming. Please take a moment to review history. Drum circles have been at the center of civilization before it was 'civilized'. Back to tribes and indigenous peoples hundreds upon hundreds of years ago, drumming has played a central role in galvanizing the people, whether for festivities, preparation for war, or fighting for land and basic rights. Drums have played a central role throughout all of history. I urge you to read up on this some more and educate yourself.

Second, by your rather broad-based 'account' of all the terrible things that are 'allegedly' happening within Occupy encampments, I have no doubt that your information gathering consists almost entirely of Corporate Media, better known as the Propaganda machine. The similarities of our Corporate Media to pre and post WWII Germany are striking; but again, please educate yourself on this matter as I refuse to do it for you. 80% of all media outlets in this country are owned by 5 major Corporations. As the heart of this movement deals with Corporate ownership and it's unregulated influence on our economic, social and political systems; media owned and operated BY CORPORATIONS is not going to cover the movement accurately or fairly and will distort the facts in any way possible. To believe otherwise would be turning a blind eye to the control that Corporations have and what IS and ISN'T in their best interests. Corporations educating the people about said Corporate influence would be akin to shooting themselves in the foot. They aren't going to provide fair coverage. Why would they? So I urge you to open your eyes to that fact and seek knowledge where there is not an agenda to be had: specifically, independent, non-profit media sources.

Third and most importantly, you have missed the point entirely of the term Occupy and why it's so widely used. It's more an IDEA than a tactic. It cannot be narrowed down to fit into a slim definition. It is the IDEA that is 'occupying' this country: it's occupying conversations around dinner-tables and family gatherings; it's occupying social networking sites where debates are taking place; it's occupying schools and classrooms; it's occupying communities and neighborhoods; it's occupying the minds of individuals as they awaken to the truth and begin to ask themselves hard questions. It's occupying the minds of Americans across all party-lines; even those who dislike the movement are occupied with the IDEA of it even if it's only to argue against it. An idea, THE idea of the 'Occupy' movement is currently occupying every mind in America. And if you want to take that to it's literal application, if you feel you MUST, then by definition the movement is accomplishing exactly what it started out to do: to occupy, to 'hold' the attention and awareness of society. It's inspiring people to discuss issues outside their comfort zone. And once people engage in conversation, knowledge is born and solutions begin to emerge: solutions on how to move this country forward, how to build a better future, how to reclaim the American dream. It's forcing us to look at the world differently, to view each other differently and THAT is at the epicenter of a successful social justice movement. It IS change. It IS progress. And the IDEA, now effectively 'occupying' the soul of America, will not stop growing until the idea transforms into change and progress. That process of transformation has a name. It's called a revolution.
