Soft Regime Change in America

Will #OCCUPY Spark a Wildcat General Strike?
Soft Regime Change in America
How I feel, as a United States Marine, about what occurred in Oakland. (Reddit)

The #OCCUPY movement is entering an ominous new phase.

Police attacked #OCCUPYOAKLAND on Tuesday with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash grenades. Scott Olsen, a two time Iraq war veteran, was critically wounded in the assault. Graphic pictures of an unconscious Olsen, his skull fractured, being carried by fellow protestors to safety have reverberated from Zuccotti to Cairo and escalated the movement. On Wednesday, three thousand protestors reclaimed the square, reestablished their encampment and held a general assembly that called for a General Strike.

"We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%... All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them."

There are signs of occupations in other cities taking up Oakland's call. A tantalizing possibility hangs in the air: Could a wildcat general strike spread across the nation? Are we witnessing the first clues of how a soft regime change might begin in America?

Oakland Local

Let's be fair. One or a few officers made some questionable choices out of fear or excitement, meanwhile, tons of protestors were throwing things at the force, endangering and scaring them as well. The police have to deal with a lot of crazy scary people in Oakland every single day; police are collectively not the enemy and individually, most are really nice. Police suffer with the 99%. Day in and day out, they have to deal with the worst of society. It is the overall current system, the big American picture, that does not work and is the problem, not the police.

Keep your anger focused at the real problem, not at your brothers, or you will lose your way.

Bullshit. I have seen no evidence of protesters attacking the police. The cops are fascist thugs and they enjoy doing things like this, The irony is they are protecting a system that will throw them overboard in a second. The police ARE the enemy and if they keep attacking non-violent protesters, which they will, they will get the response they truly desire--violence in return, And they deserve it.

Under the influence of adrenaline it's hard to display self control and this works for both sides.

Are all police fascist pigs? no, that is a huge generalization which one has no grounds. How is your name calling constructive? We need to enforce change, not breed hate. Education is what improves a society

If there is any anger, it should be taken out on individuals and root causes. If the police officers used excessive force, then through our judicial system the proper disciplinary actions should take place. If the government that is in place is not taking the proper disciplinary actions, then start a new NFP council using

I feel like the message of this movement is becoming skewed. Are we fighting capitalism or are we fighting the corrupt political leaders and lobbyists which impeach on our liberties as free equal citizens. One good thing about a capitalistic economy is that we have the freedom to choose what we purchase; it's unfortunate that our options are diminishing. The regulations eliminating competition for the major corps is what we should be fighting. We shouldn't be fighting for higher corporate taxes. We should be fighting for less taxes, and the removal of private interests from the laws that are written to regulate our freedoms!

We need to stop allowing the expansion of the federal government, and we need to eliminate the programs which have no right being funded by our income: the DEA, the FDA, the federal reserve, wars against a countries based on resources we don't own, privatize mail, federal education guidelines, and the FCC

We need to remember why we split from Britain in the first place. Why should we have a government represent us when they aren't with us. Why should the 1% have a say in where our taxes are spent and what we spend our money on? WE should be deciding how our lives should be run, through a fair democratic system.

WE should be able to choose where OUR taxes are spent.

I only want laws protecting my life, my land, and my freedom.
The way I express myself and what I put in and on my body is my choice.
