ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #15

Alright you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

We're living through a magical moment … #OCCUPYWALLSTREET has catalyzed into an international insurgency for democracy … the mood at our assemblies is electric … people who go there are drawn into a Gandhian spirit of camaraderie and hope for a new kind of future. Across the globe the 99% are marching! You have inspired more than you know. People are digging into Act One of the long Spring.

Its now time to amp up the edgy theatrics … deviant pranks, subversive performances and playful détournements of all kinds. Open your insurrectionary imagination. Anything, from a bottom-up transformation of the global economy to changing the way we eat, the way we get around, the way we live, love and communicate … be the spark that sustains a global revolution of everyday life!

As the movement matures, lets consider a response to our critics. Lets occupy the core of our global system. Lets dethrone the greed that defines this new century. Lets work to define our first great demand.

OCTOBER 29 – #ROBINHOOD GLOBAL MARCH

This is a proposal for the general assemblies of the Occupy movement.

Eight years ago, on February 15, 2003, upwards of 15 million people in sixty countries marched together to stop President Bush from invading Iraq … a huge chunk of humanity lived for one day without dead time and glimpsed the power of a united people's movement. Now we have an opportunity to repeat that performance on an even larger scale.

On October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let's the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% #ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. Let's send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3-trillion easy money that's sloshing around the global casino each day – enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.

Take this idea to your local general assembly and join your comrades in the streets on October 29.

for the wild,

I believe in the Own Wall Street movement. I support it.

However, if you're trying to make an impact on the lives of all citizens, you really need to follow:

PURPOSE --> PROCESS --> MEASUREMENT

You need to discuss "THE PURPOSE OF GOVERNMENT" and come to a consensus on what that should be. It needs to be brief.

It needs to be easily articulated by all.

It needs to be understood by everyone.

It needs to be agreed upon by everyone.

Only then can you move on to PROCESS.

What is PURPOSE ?

PURPOSE is a definitive statement about the difference you are trying to make in the world.

PURPOSE isn’t everything, but it trumps everything else. Sure, every
government needs great leadership. But great leaders also need to follow a PURPOSE established by the people. It's my experience and belief that this wonderful movement has to start with a
PURPOSE. That is the hinge that everything else hangs upon.

Please, add PURPOSE to your discussions.

If you want to dismantle power you need to go after the Congress which has the legal authority to kill-off the bankers' favorite tools of oppression - The Private central bank for one. Bailouts for the rich for another. And end subsidies for Big Agra and other corporate welfare. --- I don't know where you were in 2008, but I was emailing ~500 senators and congressmen and practically begging them NOT to bailout the banks. The republicans listened and 70% of them voted against it, but Pelosi and her corporate-loving Democrats rammed it through anyway (67% in favor).. I was very very annoyed.

We need to keep the pressure on our representatives.
And "fire" them when they refuse to listen to us.
And if necessary call a Constitutional convention to force Congress into submission.

We don't need new tools or taxes. We need to use the tools we have now. Speak up. Threaten if you have to ("vote as I tell you to vote, or you will be fired"). Yes corporatons have a lot of money but We the People hold the ultimate power to elect (or fire) the men who make the laws. We also have the power to bankrupt the bankers (stop buying their crap). We even have the power to dissolve the constitution and the U.S. government if necessary. Time to exercise it.

P.S.

I thought the banks PAID BACK the 700 billion they borrowed? Also: the Robin Hood Tax will hurt the lower and middle classes. Imagine having to pay an extra penny every time you buy or sell something... trivial but it adds up fast.

The "Robin Hood tax" discussed above is a tax on financial transactions, which the lower classes do not engage in. What you describe as "imagine having to pay an extra penny every time you buy or sell something" would be a national sales tax (i.e. the third 9 in Herman Cain's absurd and harshly regressive 9-9-9 plan). A 1% financial transaction tax would only affect people who routinely buy and sell stocks, etc.

>>>"which the lower classes do not engage in"

They don't?
They have bank savings. Checks. Credit/debit transactions Certificates of Deposit. Bonds. Stocks. Mutual Funds. SPYders. 401Ks and Roth IRAs. You prevaricate and dissemble when you make the claim that the lower and middle classes do not engage in financial transactions.
