ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #15

Alright you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

We're living through a magical moment … #OCCUPYWALLSTREET has catalyzed into an international insurgency for democracy … the mood at our assemblies is electric … people who go there are drawn into a Gandhian spirit of camaraderie and hope for a new kind of future. Across the globe the 99% are marching! You have inspired more than you know. People are digging into Act One of the long Spring.

Its now time to amp up the edgy theatrics … deviant pranks, subversive performances and playful détournements of all kinds. Open your insurrectionary imagination. Anything, from a bottom-up transformation of the global economy to changing the way we eat, the way we get around, the way we live, love and communicate … be the spark that sustains a global revolution of everyday life!

As the movement matures, lets consider a response to our critics. Lets occupy the core of our global system. Lets dethrone the greed that defines this new century. Lets work to define our first great demand.

OCTOBER 29 – #ROBINHOOD GLOBAL MARCH

This is a proposal for the general assemblies of the Occupy movement.

Eight years ago, on February 15, 2003, upwards of 15 million people in sixty countries marched together to stop President Bush from invading Iraq … a huge chunk of humanity lived for one day without dead time and glimpsed the power of a united people's movement. Now we have an opportunity to repeat that performance on an even larger scale.

On October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let's the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% #ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. Let's send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3-trillion easy money that's sloshing around the global casino each day – enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.

Take this idea to your local general assembly and join your comrades in the streets on October 29.

for the wild,

you know, I understand that you think you're right, based on what you've seen. but I don't think you are well-informed. maybe you've spent so many hours working that you haven't seen what can and is happening to many others. consider that possibly you've been fortunate. do you work in social services? there are many things you are not considering. for instance:
1) how many jobs washing dishes do you think exist? an unlimited number? the competition for such jobs is high, especially during the summer, when students are working to pay for their education.
2) away from the big cities, there are far fewer jobs and it can take months to "get lucky" with a call back, after putting out dozens and dozens of resumes. and when you have a family, relocating can be too difficult and expensive.
3) when large numbers of people are laid off, say 500... do I need to finish? 500 people suddenly out of work. how do you think that plays out? have you ever seen 2000 people lined up to apply at a factory that has just announced that they will be hiring 200 new employees?
there are not just STUDENTS who are suffering. look at the whole picture, not just the tiny portion of it you've personally witnessed. be fair.

But what exactly do you expect? Living in a small city - with very few jobs for example? Do you expect that someone will come down and make the jobs? No way! You either have to move to the place where jobs are or create them yourself. If you get fired - do you expect someone to be responsible for finding a new job for you? Yep, you get it - NO WAY! Your life - you do whatever you want!

In terms of competition - hey, this is live. We compete for everything - from small thins to big things. Competition is what drives people to excel.

I lived in Texas and New York. I saw all kinds of people. Vast majority of people who had reasonable desire to live well - live well. This country has made it sooooo easy to succeed! The problem is that people don't want to have humility, to accept the fact that their high standards of living might be in jeopardy if they wash dishes. I don't feel sorry for these people at all!

Let me however contrast this with helping someone with a health condition or perhaps who suffered from a disaster - here, yes - we have an obligation to help. But these healthy, grown men and women who are protesting, in my opinion - lazy and spoiled bunch. Nothing more.

I would also add - make the movement purely about corruption in politics and you have my support. But please please please stop saying that people can't succeed in this country. That's nonsense.

Has it ever occurred to you that people actually have those occupations of washing dishes and cleaning dirty toilets and that it was not enough? Just like the rest of the 1% who is set on the mentality that the poor are lazy. That is why this country will never prosper. Because of ignorance like that.

Americans have been working hard, to say low earners are lazy is nonsense. Big business profits and CEO bonus have risen, but average worker salaries have gone down to the point where you need multiple dead end jobs to get by.

no dickhead there arent. Capitalism and its exploitation of labor, destruction of environment, imperialism, production for markets not social needs, etc are the root core of the problem, I hope this "movement" becomes one for real, an anti-capitalist, worker lead mass movement to overthrouw the ruling classes and bring people control of their own lives, proletarian power till classes no longer exist!
