ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING #15

Alright you redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

We're living through a magical moment … #OCCUPYWALLSTREET has catalyzed into an international insurgency for democracy … the mood at our assemblies is electric … people who go there are drawn into a Gandhian spirit of camaraderie and hope for a new kind of future. Across the globe the 99% are marching! You have inspired more than you know. People are digging into Act One of the long Spring.

Its now time to amp up the edgy theatrics … deviant pranks, subversive performances and playful détournements of all kinds. Open your insurrectionary imagination. Anything, from a bottom-up transformation of the global economy to changing the way we eat, the way we get around, the way we live, love and communicate … be the spark that sustains a global revolution of everyday life!

As the movement matures, lets consider a response to our critics. Lets occupy the core of our global system. Lets dethrone the greed that defines this new century. Lets work to define our first great demand.

OCTOBER 29 – #ROBINHOOD GLOBAL MARCH

This is a proposal for the general assemblies of the Occupy movement.

Eight years ago, on February 15, 2003, upwards of 15 million people in sixty countries marched together to stop President Bush from invading Iraq … a huge chunk of humanity lived for one day without dead time and glimpsed the power of a united people's movement. Now we have an opportunity to repeat that performance on an even larger scale.

On October 29, on the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, let's the people of the world rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1% #ROBINHOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades. Let's send them a clear message: We want you to slow down some of that $1.3-trillion easy money that's sloshing around the global casino each day – enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.

Take this idea to your local general assembly and join your comrades in the streets on October 29.

for the wild,

I am not sure the goal is to smash capitalism. My goal is to examine the axioms of capitalism, namely the assumption that capitalism requires expansion, requires empire building, requires imperialism. I think we need to look at the tragedy of this assumption and its manifestation -- 300 years of American history is empire building -- and we need to craft an economy that does not depend on an endless frontier to expand in and peoples to exploit.

For some, that is what is in capitalism which they detest, and which they know has led us to increasing global poverty and war.

For others, Marxist ideologies are imperative.

But for sure, many who are dissatisfied with Capitalism assume expansionism is absolutely necessary to it, and I am not convinced that it is necessary to it at all.

For those who like me are asking this question, we are very frustrated with government policies that are focused on jump starting the economy using the same approach as is causing this continued economic collapse. And I do believe we are in continued economic collapse. I don't think it is over and I don't think we are in a "recovery."

"Capitalism requires expansion... empire building... imperialism..." Well said. And you question if this is true. Good question.

Reminds me of my Ego. Requires expansion...empire building ... imperialism. Never enough stuff, power, wealth to feel satisfied. Question: can my Ego ever be satisfied with just meeting my basic needs? Sharing the rest? Hmmm.

A friend in Mexico recently told me that due to major limitations of drug smuggling into US by cartels, that the Mexican cartels are now seriously cannabalizing their poorer citizens with extortion, kidnapping for ransoms, demanding protection monies, and corruption among police and govt. officals is epidemic.

Makes me wonder if when the USA and global Big Boys of finance/govt./military contractors, etc. get regulated, who will become their new victims of their greed?

I, like some critics of this proposal, think it is a mere small step forward. However, I suspect that I, unlike many of the critics, have participated in the consensus-building process in this movement, surrounded by hundreds of others from very diverse backgrounds, many of them who have never participated in democratic decision-making in their lives. This proposal will take much communication, deliberation and debate. Lots of talking, and even more listening, will be necessary to take any steps forward - but online debates that take a Correct Ideology, transform them into digits and broadcast them over fiber optics will do little. Go to the next General Assembly in your towns and air your criticisms.

That is the success of this proposal - that it is something that can and will likely be widely introduced around the world, and all of us will be working through this process together. It is not the passage of this proposal, its wording, or its enactment that will be the success that comes from it: it will be the hundreds of thousands or millions who will participate in it having had that experience. In most of our communities, we are not prepared to "smash the state" or to "smash capitalism." And even if we were on the other side of that victory, the people haven't been prepared and practiced in self-governance, whereas they are well acquainted with submission and domination. This proposal is to teach some new skills, so that when we move to the next stage, taking bigger steps, we'll be ready for the next world we are building.

Cheers to Adbusters for recognizing this moment, and for putting together a workable proposal!

Great observation that a way to change our country's culture to better meet our basic needs is through education, based upon experience in General Assemblies.

I think that our government can be by the people, of the people, for the people, as the example of GAs. Then there is no argument of governments not being the same as the people being productive.

Our Oklahoma Govenor, Mary Fallin, a republican, frequently brags on her deeds to spend govt. tax dollars. She links those heretical actions (taking and spending taxes) to private productivity, such as building roads for private businesses to deliver and sell their goods captalistically. And, by golly, she is right! Taxing and spending, that old Democrat idea, turns out to be the same as government and people being the same.

Government is the people's actions of producing as a group what is necessary to meet our basic needs. And what scattered individuals can't easily set up on their own. By the people, of the people, for us.
