#OCCUPYWALLSTREET

A shift in revolutionary tactics.
#OCCUPYWALLSTREET

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET

Alright you 90,000 redeemers, rebels and radicals out there,

A worldwide shift in revolutionary tactics is underway right now that bodes well for the future. The spirit of this fresh tactic, a fusion of Tahrir with the acampadas of Spain, is captured in this quote:

"The antiglobalization movement was the first step on the road. Back then our model was to attack the system like a pack of wolves. There was an alpha male, a wolf who led the pack, and those who followed behind. Now the model has evolved. Today we are one big swarm of people."

— Raimundo Viejo, Pompeu Fabra University
Barcelona, Spain

The beauty of this new formula, and what makes this novel tactic exciting, is its pragmatic simplicity: we talk to each other in various physical gatherings and virtual people's assemblies … we zero in on what our one demand will be, a demand that awakens the imagination and, if achieved, would propel us toward the radical democracy of the future … and then we go out and seize a square of singular symbolic significance and put our asses on the line to make it happen.

The time has come to deploy this emerging stratagem against the greatest corrupter of our democracy: Wall Street, the financial Gomorrah of America.

On September 17, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months. Once there, we shall incessantly repeat one simple demand in a plurality of voices.

Tahrir succeeded in large part because the people of Egypt made a straightforward ultimatum – that Mubarak must go – over and over again until they won. Following this model, what is our equally uncomplicated demand?

The most exciting candidate that we've heard so far is one that gets at the core of why the American political establishment is currently unworthy of being called a democracy: we demand that Barack Obama ordain a Presidential Commission tasked with ending the influence money has over our representatives in Washington. It's time for DEMOCRACY NOT CORPORATOCRACY, we're doomed without it.

This demand seems to capture the current national mood because cleaning up corruption in Washington is something all Americans, right and left, yearn for and can stand behind. If we hang in there, 20,000-strong, week after week against every police and National Guard effort to expel us from Wall Street, it would be impossible for Obama to ignore us. Our government would be forced to choose publicly between the will of the people and the lucre of the corporations.

This could be the beginning of a whole new social dynamic in America, a step beyond the Tea Party movement, where, instead of being caught helpless by the current power structure, we the people start getting what we want whether it be the dismantling of half the 1,000 military bases America has around the world to the reinstatement of the Glass-Steagall Act or a three strikes and you're out law for corporate criminals. Beginning from one simple demand – a presidential commission to separate money from politics – we start setting the agenda for a new America.

Post a comment and help each other zero in on what our one demand will be. And then let's screw up our courage, pack our tents and head to Wall Street with a vengeance September 17.

hey adbusters and west coast jammers! I would really like to make it to new york but i don't think funds or my work schedule will allow me to...what I can make possible is an occupation of the financial district in san francisco. I would love to know if there are more people on the west coast interested in this occupation during the same time frame as the wallstreet occupation. I would also love to hear some advice and tactics from the adbuster folks and those running the wallstreet occupation. Thanks guys, I hope this westcoast plan can really happen!

One of your representatives left this message in a relatively major public forum.

http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/ix7ql/reddit_i_hear_this_com...

If this is part of your philosophy - to blame the victims - then I actively oppose this movement. The last thing the poor and downtrodden of this nation need right now is to replace a financially oppressive regime with a psychologically abusive one.

If, on the other hand, this person is NOT one of your representatives, then perhaps you should send one of your representatives to clarify that when this person says "we" - he is not speaking on your behalf.

by Representative on July 24 2011, @09:32 am

Yes we need to send you an assembly of diplomats to clarify things before your factional leadership agrees to a treaty of common action against the nation state. We will have you flown in, and bring you behind the green screen for further discussions regarding an equitable solution for both parties enabling an active coalition in the best interest of a unified movement for the emancipation of sentient beings coexisting in synchronitic harmony circa early 21st century...

Time would be better spent

by Anonymous on July 23 2011, @09:39 am

Time would be better spent occupying the Hamptons - any strip with lots of restaurants and bars.

That's where the bigger fish will be.

And as Yves Smith at NC pointed out, Wall St. is hard place to mass people, but easy for cops.

On top of that it's mostly the lowly office workers that would be impacted. Go to where the rich like to play - that's where their bosses will be.

Even better, supposedly there is only one highway in and out of there... Just have people with placards for a long stretch on each side.

hi all. Just to be

by Anonymous on July 23 2011, @07:37 am

hi all. Just to be practical.....If you're going to occupy anything in Manhattan, occupy Times Sq or Central Park. Tactically, it's easier to defend Times Sq from the NYPD than Wall Street. (Heck just phone up some dudes from Athens and get tips from them.)

Seriously--occupy Times Sq instead. You'll be more disruptive. ABC studios and Reuters are right there. It'll be easier to blend into the tourist crowd. It's easy to defend 8th Av/Broadway/the side streets from the police.

Besides with electronic trading, occupying Wall Street is kinda meaningless and non-disruptive.

I'm just sayin'.

Your suggestion is very sound

by radleft on July 23 2011, @08:00 am

Your suggestion is very sound in a tactical sense. Wall St is still a very powerful symbol, though, and a very easy target. The temple of the parasites will be confronted with the Banners of the People. This is just the initial engagement. Wall St is a better strategic target. And we have powerful symbols of our own.
We have a fine tool: http://occupywallst.org/

we need skilled hands to take up this tool.

by Anonymous on July 22 2011, @10:37 pm

#OccupyWallStreet should aim to halt all attacks on foreign nations. #EndlessWar is the key component of the burgeoning security state. Stopping it will allow us to be introspective as a nation. Currently the government is uniting us with a common enemy. When that enemy vanishes, the real enemies of democracy will be apparent.

This rocks.....and finally

by Anonymous on July 22 2011, @02:15 pm

This rocks.....and finally someone is making the call! We had a powerful no nukes action in '79 called "Take it to Wall Street" which may well have been one of the most effective anti-nuke events of that period. It only lasted a day or two and consisted only of a few thousand occupiers, but by the time everyone was hauled away by the NYC PD and NY staties investments in the nuclear industry were pretty much history. Of course, that was 30 years ago when the police state was just feeling its legs, but hey, if they can do it in Egypt?

I love the idea of occupying

by joeh_kshanti on July 22 2011, @01:24 pm

I love the idea of occupying Wall St, but the demand for a presidential commission is lame. Obama is really a Republican, I'm absolutely convinced of that now. Do you think all those people in Tahrir Square wanted a freaking commission? No, they wanted Mubarak out! We are all being subjected to political & economic terrorism by our so-called leaders & representatives. This really is a matter of life & death, so we really have to go big, go all the way with our demands. The system cannot be reformed; the system itself is the problem. I'm afraid the only real option we have is to demand an end to the whole capitalist system itself. And a state-run socialist economy is not the only alternative; I've been looking into things like social ecology, Parecon, & gift economy.

Two things that the

by Anonymous on July 22 2011, @01:13 pm

Two things that the collective (us) needs to remember on this date. We absolutely cannot underestimate the forces that will be called to defuse the situation and try to remove us from the streets...(three months of peaceful protest is very ambitious without knowing what could happen). America acts fast, so fast in fact, that they may already be there BEFORE we arrive. (The media is already becoming aware of our cause)

Underestimating the circumstances will only end it quickly.

The other thing we should remember is to not over-estimate ourselves on the matter (we don't have to worry about underestimating ourselves...otherwise Occupy Wallstreet wouldn't exist).

Although it's more than mindful to prepare for food, living, and hygienic conditions...how should we prepare for the worse case scenario?
