A Movement is Born

As #OWS spreads across the country, people are realizing, it's time to live!

This article is available in:

Jammers, dreamers, rabble-rousers, revolutionaries,

#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is thundering across America, threatening to morph into a full fledged national movement. Channeling the nonviolence of the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the bottom-up collective decision making of the Spanish acampadas, we vow to end the monied corruption of our democracy.

This Saturday #OCCUPYWALLSTREET enters its third week … be there at Noon and stay for the weekend … or be at one of the 50+ fledgling occupations now being organized across the land.

Our people's democracy movement is about to get three mighty boosts:

  • On October 6, a few thousand of us will swarm the capital and #OCCUPYDC. Find out the plan at october2011.org
  • On October 15th, the movement goes global … check it out at 15october.net
  • Then, on November 3 and 4, we have something special in mind for when the G20 leaders meet in France.

Time to live!

for the wild,

PS.

Our movement needs more edgy theatrics … maybe we should tar and feather the Charging Bull … or burn an effigy of Lloyd Blankfein? Send your wild ideas to [email protected].

To get a sense of the visceral mood at #OCCUPYWALLSTREET, check out the daily dispatches from OccupyTVNY along with the mini-documentaries "We Are The 99%" and "Nobody Can Predict The Moment Of Revolution." Also, David Graeber's op-ed in the Guardian and Nathan Schneider's article in the Nation are worth reading.

It is great to see people start to take a stand against wall street and to see this movement growing. We are facing many issues with corporations control of our government. Corporations are NOT people and it is time that real people take back our government. Remind politicians that we are the ones who need protection from businesses not the other way around. Hopefully some unified goals can be created so that we can move in that direction. The blog post "How You Can Help #OCCUPYWALLSTREET" was nice to see what we can do to make a difference. We as individuals can decide what is important to us and take those steps. For instance the use cash movement is something I agree with. It helps get the point to banks about their fees. But the maxing out credit cars on big ticket items and then returning them the next day is not something I would support because it effects more than just the banks. As individuals we can make these choices.

I admire the vibrant spirit behind this movement, but in the same context I'M concerned by the fact that it may just fail and become just another political 'fad.' I'M already hearing from various 'Occupy" groups throughtout the US various political mantras. These mantras sound like they come right out of the Democratic parties playbook. This has me wondering if this movement will allow itself to become hijacked by the Democratic political machine. If this is the case then this movement will just be see as another radical counter to the 'Tea Party.' The appeal of this movement is it's apolitcal stance. It is comprised of a wide spectrum of our society who are just fed up with the 'greed' that is destroying the fabric of our society. If this movement allows itself to aliign itself with any aspect of Washington (Democrat, Republican, etc.) it becomes part of the system that is the reason for this movemnt in the first place. When I hear people of the Occupy movements chanting 'Obamas Jobs Plan' I just shake my head and wonder if the movement is already doomed. The vast middle class support this movemnt because it is apolitical and we see it as a voice of the people who are tired of the same empty promises, the corperate greed, the class warfare being waged against us, etc. If they see various Democratic party members (or any other Washington, State, Local politician) lining up to be associated with this movemnt and use it as a platform for the 'Party" agenda then middle America (which is not as dumb as some would have you belive) will see this movement for what it is..........POLITCS AS USUAL. So please keep the political parasites away from this movement as it was these same politicians and assorted wannabes (Democrats & Republicans) that are the problem. Keep their corruption out of this movement............

Occupy Boston is chanting these slogans. They have taken a far far leftist approach and are alienating peole who are more middle of the road from the movement. Occupy Boston is showing its true colors...just look at some of the staements made by them to the media. This is killing the movement and it is showing that this is just yet another political leftist agenda. Research and speak to some folks who went to the rally points for Occupy Boston only to be told their views were wrong and then they were heckled, booed...these are main stream folks who feel the same anger but because they are not wacky leftists they are spurned by the Occupy Boston movement. This my friends is the begining of the end as people with their own agendas are hijacking the movement. It will lose it's appeal to the masses and time and will just be another passing phase that will change nothing. Please save this movement from the wacko leftists and Democratic Party types........keep this movement for the REAL 99%!
