Hate Speech or Free Speech?
Here is the story of why Adbusters has been blacklisted:
A walled off ghetto, an occupying military that controls the entry of food and daily necessities, desperate attempts by hungry civilians to smuggle commodities through tunnels, and punitive collective punishment against all those who resist … there are never-to-be-forgotten differences, of course, but also some striking similarities between the Warsaw ghetto in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II and the open air prison of Gaza in Israeli-occupied Palestine today. And yet the Canadian Jewish Congress is accusing Adbusters of anti-Semitism for making this historical comparison, and it has successfully lobbied one of Canada's biggest pharmacy chains to remove Adbusters magazine from its shelves.
Now there's a meme war brewing in one of Canada's national newspapers:
Canadian Jewish Congress attacks Adbusters on October 22
Adbusters fights back on November 2
As any pro-peace activist knows, the pro-Israel lobby has a sordid history of using the charge of anti-Semitism to silence criticism of Israeli policies. Even President Carter was smeared because he dared speak of the "abominable oppression and persecution in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a rigid system of required passes and strict segregation between Palestine's citizens and Jewish settlers in the West Bank".
But the use of cluster bombs on civilians in Lebanon in the closing days of the last Israeli incursion there, the wholesale deaths of noncombatants in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead, the extrajudicial assassination in Dubai last January, the killing of protesters aboard the Mavi Marmara this summer, the ongoing construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank and the hate speech of Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, have changed the way the world now looks at Israel. This is fast morphing into a meme war that the Israeli PR machine can no longer win and this more than anything may finally bring Israel to the peace negotiation table in good faith.
Check out the Canadian Journalism Project's article "Adbusters, ghettoes and Shoppers: Anti-semitism or free speech?" and The Canadian Charger's "Canada's Adbusters Magazine and the Israeli Lobby".
If you think that publishing side-by-side images of the Gaza and Warsaw ghettos is a valid expression of free speech, send an email to Shoppers Drug Mart’s CEO Jürgen Schreiber – [email protected] and [email protected] – and tell him that you are boycotting his store until Adbusters is back on the shelves. Be polite but clear. Then send a note to the Canadian Jewish Congress – www.cjc.ca/about-cjc/staff/ – reminding them that in a free country we debate rather than censor.

I am an appreciative Adbusters reader, but I feel that this particular topic has weakened them as far as credibility goes...
Guys, if we want to create something new we have to completely eradicate the circle of violence, and that includes verbal/written violence. By comparing one event to another you are only feeding more hatred into the system. This theoretical stance is a superficial analysis, pulp digital wiki-journalism, sensationalism - everything I would think Adbusters would be against. It reads like an immature reaction to a CNN blog post.
If we want to change things we have to look at conflict and see people, not a list of "who-did-what-first".
I have been to Gaza.
I have met people in Gaza.
The point that most of us miss is the "grayness" of the whole situation. A grayness that was definitely NOT the case in Nazi Germany. Yes, Israel has been in the wrong in multiple cases, but so have the Palestinians. The Jews in Nazi Germany were simply part of the population, targeted based on the whim of a psychotic yet extremely intelligent leader. And they weren't just treated badly, they were exterminated like pests. Israelis have become very tough people, but they are not inherently cruel. Paranoiac, perhaps, but not psychotic. Israeli taxpayers pay for food and other aid worth millions of dollars, but living in a reality where you, or a family member, could be killed on the way to work or school in the middle of your hometown can lead to paranoia. Not to mention the fact that Israel is geograophically surrounded by countries that wish for its destruction. This does not mean that Israel cannot be accountable for its reactions, of course.
Maybe I have high expectations from the Adbusters' writers, but there is no depth here, no real wisdom.
A question to Adbusters: Do you realize how much energy you are putting into the defense of an analogy that you didn't even think up yourselves?
I'm beginning to fear that Adbusters is just a subdivision of TIME-Warner or the like.
After all, it seems they really take their sales personally!

I have been to Palestine, too. And everything Adbusters has written here is 100% true and accurate.

Richie,
You seem to be a thoughtful and reasonable person but for the fact that you seem compelled to gloss over what are the facts of history as understood by any honest observer of that tortured land. There are huge and important differences of scale and intent between Nazi policies of extermination and Israeli expansion but there are also striking similarities. As has been well understood and openly discussed for decades by mainstream Israeli historians such as Benny Morris not to mention high Israeli officials the Zionist project was founded on ethnic cleansing. This is not controversial outside of U.S. political discourse. An even more honest interpretation of its history is that aggression and slaughter (as was the European onslaught of North, Central and South America) was the main tool employed to establish the "Jewish" state. Thirty years ago Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur observed that since 1948, "we have been fighting against a population that lives in villages and cities." As Israel's most prominent military analyst, Zeev Schiff, summarized his remarks, "the Israeli Army has always struck civilian populations, purposely and consciously...the Army, he said, has never distinguished civilian [from military] targets...[but] purposely attacked civilian targets." The reasons were explained by Abba Eban: "there was a rational prospect, ultimately fulfilled, that affected populations would exert pressure for the cessation of hostilities." Eban was commenting on a review of Labor government attacks against civilians by Prime Minister Begin, presenting a picture, Eban said, "of an Israel wantonly inflicting every possible measure of death and anguish on civilian populations in a mood reminiscent of regimes which neither Mr. Begin nor I would dare to mention by name." Should Adbusters be condemned for mentioning the name Abba Eban dare not? There is nothing "gray" about the basic crimes upon which Israel was founded. There is nothing gray about the second class status of non-Jews in Israel. There’s nothing gray about laws being forwarded in the Knesset requiring loyalty oaths by immigrants to Israel declaring and affirming Israel’s existence as a “Jewish” state thereby forcing the newcomers (as well as non-Jewish citizens) to swear to their political and social subjugation. This kind of thinly veiled racist ideology has prompted the Israeli social affairs minister Isaac Herzog to remark "There is a whiff of fascism on the margins of Israeli society.” There is nothing "gray" about the prison that is Gaza being attacked relentlessly from the air by F-16's (none being scratched in 555 sorties) and heavy artillery provided by the U.S., targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure killing some 1400 mostly women and children. There is nothing gray about the use of phosphorous. There is nothing gray about cluster bombs used in tight civilian neighborhoods. There is nothing gray about 20,000 people killed in Lebanon in 1982. There's nothing gray about the Sabra and Shatilla massacre. There's nothing gray about kids with rocks against M-1 Abrahms tanks. There is nothing gray about attacking unarmed aid ships and killing their passengers in open seas. There's nothing at all gray about what was for years a death toll ratio of 40 to 1 Palestinian to Israeli which was of no concern to those in power in Israel and the U.S. but eventually became intolerable when the ratio came down to 3 to 1. And yes there is nothing gray about the wanton murder that is Palestinian terror against the Israeli population. What is remarkable is an Israeli mindset which has indeed become psychotic (see Uri Avnery, Ilan Papne, Gideon Levy and many other Israeli/Jewish writers who have seen this psychosis up close) to the point where just like in the U.S. there is a collective cry of “Why do they hate us?” as they go about their decades long illegal killing, annexation and dismemberment of the Palestinian people and their land.
I think the only gray to be found is in the answer to the moral quandary posed by the question of whether violent resistance to decades of murder and occupation, imprisonment of thousands indefinitely without trial, the demolition of homes and orchards and the expansion of settlements with no end in sight is legitimate.

In the past, Bernie M. Farber, CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress has campaigned against Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, Mark Twain's The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn and Norman Finkelstein and Ruth Bettina Birn's A Nation On Trial. After two decades of his pro-censorship activism, it is hard to take Farber's baseless insults seriously.
Farber even wants to censor the internet in Canada:

When did they start pulling them?
I live in a relatively small city and I purchased a copy of the carnivalesque rebellion edition last night (November 3rd) and there were still other copies on the shelf.
