The Future of #OCCUPY

What's next for the movement?

ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING

This article is available in:

The initial phase of the #OCCUPY movement was marked by several weeks of viral growth that peaked on October 15 with a global day of action. In the next phase, there will be a turn towards addressing the deep philosophical and strategic questions of how to escalate this democracy moment into a revolutionary people's movement. Across the nation there are clear signs that the #OCCUPY movement is simultaneously maturing and growing more militant.

Of the many questions swirling around #OCCUPY, the most challenging is how to gel into a global movement without sacrificing the decentralized, leaderless model. There is a widespread acknowledgment that there are challenges that can only be dealt with on a global scale, such as a climate change accord and overturning international casino capitalism, and that we must therefore forge a globally united people's movement. However, there is also a growing recognition that the general assembly model that has worked beautifully thus far may be fundamentally limited on a structural level.

A breakthrough came on Friday from the New York City General Assembly where the structure working group has proposed, and the general assembly has accepted, the adoption of a modified spokes council model that will work in conjunction with the general assembly. This lays the foundation for a regional, national and potentially international spokes council, something that both #OCCUPYPHILLY and The 99 Percent Declaration have been pushing for. We are beginning to see how the #OCCUPY movement will elevate itself into an international force.

Meanwhile, the power center of the movement is shifting away from the East Coast towards the West. On Wednesday, #OCCUPYOAKLAND is organizing a General Strike that is already finding support within the local community. Solidarity actions are planned in occupations nationwide. Within the movement, there is a sense that this may be a turning point as militant tactics come to the fore and direct confrontation with the structures of the corporate-state becomes the norm.

Other sparks on the horizon include the November 5 Transition Day/Bank Transfer Day, the November 25 Buy Nothing Day kick off to #OCCUPYXMAS and the December 10 Global Day of Action which was proposed this week by the international network behind the blast on October 15.

Hang in there!

In B.C. the railway land still legally belongs to Aboriginal people. It was never ceded by treaty or agreement.

This does not help society which are the 99% of people that need to get access to clothing, food, medicine and many other goods that are critical for daily survival.

What happened to Occupy the "private" Federal Reserve Bank and the Government that let them get away with TOTAL CORRUPTION? The FED is run by the BANKS for the BANKS. About 95% of the Government is BOUGHT by the BANKS which forced US Citizens to bail them out. The BANKS get $16 Trillion (confirmed by GAO report) in loans at nearly 0% interest and never return this capital to MAIN STREET. They continue gambling the money in TOXIC DERIVATIVES, run up Commodities (that crush fix income citizens) and other NON REGULATED speculative activities.

The FED needs to be nationalized, BANKS need to fail under free market conditions, be downsized and better regulated (e.g. enhanced version of Glass-Steagall Act ) so they never become TO BIG TO FAIL. We need to get special interest out of Government and have TERM LIMITS for all branches of our Government.

Despite hailing from a founding American family, I'm struggling to buy propane for my family for the coming Winter in the Pac Northwest. $260/month for propane. Going the electric heater in one room route. Luckily, we have food stamps, like 1 in 6 Americans. Between my wife and myself, we have 12 years of college education. There are no jobs to support a family since we insist my wife stays home with the kids so they aren't raised by the state. We refuse to be two income slaves who abandon our kids.

My IQ is over 145. We are white and physically fit and attractive. This economic warfare has turned me from a conservative libertarian into a socialist. We had to use the food bank before getting food stamps. My step-grandfather was a socialist/atheist professor at Stanford. He had a newsletter that landed him on the FBI subversive watchlist during the cold war, despite being a navy vet and a pure English descended old time American. His newsletter merely highlighted issues of social injustices. I have all the issues ever printed.

I refuse to not have children because of Goldman Sachs' excesses.

Alan Greenspan took over the Fed Reserve and was hailed by a genius by his media family, he immediately set about destroying America, while enriching his family on Wall St. He made sure the post went to his family. This is no longer America. America just drone killed a 16 year old American citizen because his father was a Muslim preacher. That is the Judaic way. This is not the America of my forefathers. We are living under attack.

As regards the one-room electric heater, try this instead:
Put an electric blanket on top of the mattress. Keep a wool blanket on top of you. This accomplishes two things: it protects your body from a cold mattress, and the rising heat is trapped under the wool blanket. With an electric blanket on top. most of the heat is lost into the air.
I have used this method for about a decade. It keeps me and my bones warm.
You will use less electricity than using an electric room heater and the resulting dry air will not dry out your lungs, which leaves you more susceptible to colds and flu.

" There are no jobs to support a family since we insist my wife stays home with the kids so they aren't raised by the state. We refuse to be two income slaves who abandon our kids".

What world are you living in? Have you done much travel overseas? Life's tough and you're asking for exception from the way things are. The idealized model of the mid 20th century white American family is anomalous, was primarily enjoyed by whites, lasted a brief stretch of decades and depended on the hard labor of people all over the world who didn't have it so good. If you insist on being single-income so your wife can stay home with multiple children, realize you're going to have to make significant sacrifices.

Granted, the international banking system, corporations and government are corrupt, but so are the people, namely, you're precious 99%. In the same way the banks, govt and corps speculated on hypothetical money, so did FAR too many folks all over the world. People imagined they could buy homes, cars and personal goods FAR beyond their means. The delusion was, and still is, shared at all levels.

"My IQ is over 145. We are white and physically fit and attractive." - and?

Yes, I've been on food stamps, welfare, unemployment, etc. at different times in my life, so I know that scene and how difficult it can be. I'm lucky to have a job, even though it's not exactly in line with my preferred type of work. I live within my means and wouldn't expect to support a wife and kids on it. Collectively speaking, most Americans, along with citizens from a number of other countries, are well overdue in paying the piper.

We've deluded ourselves for several decades of easy living. Granted, this does not apply to all people, but I think it's honest in looking at the behavior of many, many people. Nobody likes lean times but it's what is deserved, from the individual to the largest corporate and government levels.
