The Future of #OCCUPY

What's next for the movement?

ADBUSTERS TACTICAL BRIEFING

This article is available in:

The initial phase of the #OCCUPY movement was marked by several weeks of viral growth that peaked on October 15 with a global day of action. In the next phase, there will be a turn towards addressing the deep philosophical and strategic questions of how to escalate this democracy moment into a revolutionary people's movement. Across the nation there are clear signs that the #OCCUPY movement is simultaneously maturing and growing more militant.

Of the many questions swirling around #OCCUPY, the most challenging is how to gel into a global movement without sacrificing the decentralized, leaderless model. There is a widespread acknowledgment that there are challenges that can only be dealt with on a global scale, such as a climate change accord and overturning international casino capitalism, and that we must therefore forge a globally united people's movement. However, there is also a growing recognition that the general assembly model that has worked beautifully thus far may be fundamentally limited on a structural level.

A breakthrough came on Friday from the New York City General Assembly where the structure working group has proposed, and the general assembly has accepted, the adoption of a modified spokes council model that will work in conjunction with the general assembly. This lays the foundation for a regional, national and potentially international spokes council, something that both #OCCUPYPHILLY and The 99 Percent Declaration have been pushing for. We are beginning to see how the #OCCUPY movement will elevate itself into an international force.

Meanwhile, the power center of the movement is shifting away from the East Coast towards the West. On Wednesday, #OCCUPYOAKLAND is organizing a General Strike that is already finding support within the local community. Solidarity actions are planned in occupations nationwide. Within the movement, there is a sense that this may be a turning point as militant tactics come to the fore and direct confrontation with the structures of the corporate-state becomes the norm.

Other sparks on the horizon include the November 5 Transition Day/Bank Transfer Day, the November 25 Buy Nothing Day kick off to #OCCUPYXMAS and the December 10 Global Day of Action which was proposed this week by the international network behind the blast on October 15.

Hang in there!

"the most challenging is how to gel into a global movement without sacrificing the decentralized, leaderless model"........ OWS has been successful in focusing attention on a number of issues that have wide support. Still I do not believe it will be successful in making any meaningful changes, annoying as it is to the powers that be. A 'post' OWS will need to mobilize that support into meaningful action. One it will have to address the supporters who will not get off the couch, and two, express an action that will have the power the make change. Money is power, not until we stop giving our money away will we stop the transfer of power. When it becomes cooler not to have the newest I-pad than to have it, will the corporations take real notice. Rotating targeted boycotts, saving money, living cheaply and local, playing one corporation (bank, service, product) against another, in a running battle will break the backs of the corporate greed system. The goal posts are not far at all. Only effecting Wall Street's fragile quarterly growth will be enough to force change. This action would not kill the corporation but will stop the Wall Street vampires from sucking the life out of a business and it's workers. It has to become cool to turn our backs on consumerism, and embrace a Steady State Economy.

november,novemb...

"And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had...and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistines."-- 1 Samuel 17:40..... stop being herded by our rulers and their paid goons get down to making real change...

Put capital & people to work

Hi,
First time poster here.

Sorry if this seems naïve, but I remember from somewhere that the economy is a matter of how fast capital/money moves (velocity?) and that the faster it moves, the more people benefit.

I also remember that one of the earliest forms of taxes has to do with taxing NON-WORKING CAPITAL.
Very simply, put your money to work, pay it out to your stockholders, or pay a tax on it!

In all cases, the money will move and people who have money will spend it and so on…

I’m sure some economists and accountants can get together and devise a fair definition of NON-WORKING CAPITAL. e.g. any Cash asset greater than a % of the company value that is sitting in a bank, in T-bills, gold, industrial building, real-estate, that is not working or benefiting society in some way, etc.

You could even reduce the tax on profits…

Any thoughts?

wow!!! great website. especially buy-nothing day. that will really help our economy won't it? let's all band together and boycott the stores during the biggest shopping season of the year! the stores make money and that's not fair so they shouldn't be allowed!! let's freeze all the capital in the world and make it completely stagnant!! When we accomplish that, inflation will be at an all-time high! let's quit our jobs to go protest! That way, we can be unproductive members of society! Let's protest the rich 1% who provide millions of Americans WITH jobs. believe it or not, the rich actually HELP our economy. I know, crazy right?
