Chris Hedges On Nonviolence

Why truth, not fear, is Occupy’s greatest weapon.
Living in Truth

Part of an ongoing debate within the Occupy community, author Chris Hedges says that our lessons should be drawn from the visionary philosophy of Czech revolutionary Vaclav Havel, not the “diversity of tactics” of the Black Bloc. “Living in Truth,” Havel’s ideal of refusal to fear, begins when we create alternative means of existence and deny the impulse to expected responses. States are well equipped to deal with the loss of order and violence but are inept at dealing with loss of faith and mass non-violence, Hedges argues. That is why government agitators and provocateurs are actively involved in the movement – to divide it and conquer its 99% appeal.

There is a recipe for breaking popular movements. I watched it play out over five years in the war in El Salvador. I now see these familiar patterns in the assault against the Occupy movement. It goes like this. Physically eradicate the insurgents’ logistical base of operations to disrupt communication and organization. Dry up financial and material support. Create rival organizations—the group Stand for Oakland seems to be one of these attempts—to discredit and purge the rebel leadership. Infiltrate the movement to foster internal divisions and rivalries, a tactic carried out consciously, or perhaps unconsciously, by an anonymous West Coast group known as OLAASM—Occupy Los Angeles Anti Social Media. Provoke the movement—or front groups acting in the name of the movement—to carry out actions such as vandalism and physical confrontations with the police that alienate the wider populace from the insurgency. Invent atrocities and repugnant acts supposedly carried out by the movement and plant these stories in the media. Finally, offer up a political alternative. In the war in El Salvador it was Jose Napoleon Duarte. For the Occupy movement it is someone like Van Jones. And use this “reformist” to co-opt the language of the movement and promise to promote the movement’s core aims through the electoral process.

I get it. Thanks for that explanation. Why is it so difficult for everyone to understand the simplicity behind peace? Only non-violence can lead to peace. Simple. The global collective consciousness has tapped into this, hence the global Occupy movements. Many of those might have only been a handful of people, but the 'Occupy' meme spread like wildfire. People all around the world embraced the concept because it was a welcomed change from what had been dominating the global theater for over 10 years with Afghanistan/Iraq, etc. People longed for non-violence/peace. Children embraced it. College students were invigorated. Cynical 30/40somethings believed in the power of "the whole world is watching," a chant with the power to shame men of perceived authority. Senior Citizens came out of retirement, so to speak ;) to join the rest of us in an activity they could also participate in actively. It was beautiful. Which is why it was so powerful when we saw the police and their exceedingly brutal use of force against the truly diverse masses. I hope the spring brings that spirit once again, reinvigorated and ready to 'Occupy' more minds, hearts, and souls.

Yeah Occupy is beautiful and will ultimately make no difference whatsoever.

Entrenched power can only be tackled by truth AND fear

'Occupy' has already left its mark, and a deep one in the psyche of the nation. It won't be the direct force that takes down the pigs at the top, but it certainly started the process. Entrenched power BECOMES entrenched power because of deception and fear, NEVER because of TRUTH. TRUE POWER does not need to be entrenched. It does not have to HOLD ONTO anything because it's everywhere, in us and in our surroundings. I'm getting a bit new agey with that last comment, I guess, but hopefully the point comes through. In order to replace it, you must reverse its source of power and use it against itself for it's inevitable implosion. Deception and Fear is fought with Truth and Courage. Embracing fear, violence, hate, deception, etc. as a means to fight entrenched power by the corporate elite simply means that when they're gone, you'll be the replacement, one who used fear and violence to rid the world of those who used fear and violence. Can you see the cycle? You can't just use fear and violence and then once you've achieved your goal, embrace peace and justice. That is hypocrisy.

This Too Shall Pass

"Truth without fear is impotent." Nice slogan, but you're wrong. Many historic examples of social progress illustrate my point. The end of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, female suffrage, the American civil rights movement, Indian emancipation, gay rights, and so forth all were ultimately successful because the truth of each of these causes simply could not be denied.

If you cannot persuade peacefully and rationally, then it is your cause that is impotent and resorting to fear might be your only other option. History bears this out too. Every totalitarian regime I can think of, every hard-line, freedom suppressing movement I can think of has resorted to fear, and its grotesque cousin violence, to get people on board. Look at what has happened to the truth of climate change. Fear has distorted the issue to the point that it is no longer recognizable.

Force is anathema to OWS because it is the exact opposite of freedom. Just like war can never bring peace, and democracy by way of the gun is not democratic in any sense of the word.

Gandhi said, "be the change you want to see in the world." Be violent and nothing will happen. Understand?

It's easy to spray paint a building, break a window, or burn a flag. It's difficult to love your enemy even when they are kicking you down and evicting you.

This movement is not going to be easy, but I completely agree it has to stay nonviolent in order to gain traction and gain support in the public. You cannot underestimate the media machine; they will edit everything protestors say and do in order to undermine the true goals of OWS.
