Battle for the Soul of Occupy

Round 7 - The Black Bloc Anarchist Turn.

KARNEY HATCH

Occupy’s May Day General Strike was a surprising and bold success for the visceral side of the movement. While most of Occupy put its energy into building coalitions with “legacy progressive groups”, labor unions and immigrant rights organizations, these efforts did not yield the anticipated results. In New York, for example, despite amassing a coalition of over a hundred organizations and rallying a crowd of more than 30,000, occupiers were thwarted in their attempts to shut down banks or re-occupy Wall Street. And some Zuccottis have complained that union representatives actively blocked an attempt to lead the crowd toward direct action at the end of the night. Meanwhile in Seattle, Oakland, San Francisco, New Orleans and elsewhere, anarchists using Black Bloc tactics stole the show.

On websites and forums, anarchists are rejoicing the spectacular showing of Black Bloc. “American anarchists haven’t experienced this much positive public attention since the euphoria and aftermath of N30 in Seattle,” writes one commentator. For many, the Black Bloc represents a tactical innovation that suggests the future of Occupy. “Occupy is dead, long live the Black Bloc,” writes another. An anarchist in New Orleans described how the status quo was unprepared for their tactics: “the Anti-Capitalism march caught the police off-guard and has the media dumb-founded. A full 24-hours later the Times Picayune has said nothing about the Anti-Capitalist March, only making mention of the permitted march that happened earlier in the day.”

In Oakland, the Black Bloc, which made up a large portion of the May Day General Strike, displayed a coordinated tactical philosophy – including the de-arresting of comrades, throwing eggs filled with paint, using homemade smoke-creating incendiaries to confuse police, and the rejection of media – that suggests prior planning, ongoing innovation and increasing sophistication. And Black Bloc tactics are just one aspect of the overall rejuvenation of anarchism that is happening right now including the increase of infoshops (there are two near Occupy Oakland: The Holdout and The Longhaul); the creation of bottom-up solidarity networks to replace top-down unions; providing free food on the model of Food Not Bombs; offering a compelling DIY aesthetic.

Anarchist occupiers are energized and their visceral tactics are attracting members. Now, the power of the Black Bloc is growing within Occupy and pushing the movement in unexpected directions.

Round 7 goes to the Black Bloc – now let’s see what we can do for the rest of May!

The Occupy movement and Anarchists are failures. And I do not say that with harsh tones in my voice. But rather nothing has fundamentally changed within the working class since the Occupy Movement first emerged. The destruction of property only unifies the bourgeoisie and the 1% together to let the so-called free markets remain. It brings them comfort and security. Marx would point out that capitalism is running its course right now. Capitalism is does not exploit out of harsh cruelty, it does so because it is necessary for it to function. One day the working class will become collectively conscious of its exploitation together and rise up. No small faction will turn the tide.

How could the bourgeoisie be threatened without the end of property, in physical form as destruction of property or the end of its value? Generalizing the profanation of property is absolutely necessary. Marx, saying that capitalism is running its course means nothing, as Marx and Marxists have been saying this since the 1840s... A generalization of rejection of property and work is exactly the working class becoming conscious and rising up, you simply have too many blinders surrounding your eyes to see it. Revolution could be upon you and you'd still preach the same total paralysis.

You don't understand Marx. Or communists for that matter. There is a difference between rejecting private property, and being a small sect of hooligans vandalizing private property. Anarchists who subscribe to black bloc tactics do not represent the class. And it is the class once awakened (and that day never comes so be it) that will bring revolution, not anarchists. Power to the people after all.

nothing represents "the class" you idiot. If you're gonna be a marxist at least find a strain that isn't steeped in essentialist class politics bs.

Anarchy, really ?, I guess that means corporations and the rich elite win, they have more toys, bigger toys, and a history of using them. I don't think their is a consensus at all regarding that in the Occupy Movement at large, not only would the movement lose any media support, but if that was the stated position, Occupy would lose it's public support. It's not about the Movement, it's about what the Movement does for the lives of the 99%.

And this is why you will never get anywhere. Anarchist movements or movements bent on anarchism have never had any traction in the USA. Not now, not after WWI, and not during the Viet Nam war protests. The Weathermen never caught on in a larger and broader way, and neither will Occupy.

i don't want anarchism. sure it'd be nice to have more comrades with an understanding of my particular philosophy, but my real aim is to spread anarchy. That is, to spread liberation from all the various forms of oppression. whether or not anyone helping in this project calls themselves an anarchist or not is beside the point.
