TACTICAL BRIEFING #18

Occupy the High Ground!

This article is available in:

Hey you creatives, artists, environmentalists, workers, moms, dads, students, malcontents, do-gooders and aspiring martyrs in the snow:

The last four months have been hard fought, inspiring and delightfully revolutionary. We brought tents, hunkered down, held our assemblies, and lobbed a meme-bomb that continues to explode the world's imagination. Many of us have never felt so alive. We have fertilized the future with our revolutionary spirit … and a thousand flowers will surely bloom in the coming Spring.

But as winter approaches an ominous mood could set in … hope thwarted is in danger of turning sour, patience exhausted becoming anger, militant nonviolence losing its allure. It isn't just the mainstream media that says things could get ugly. What shall we do to keep the magic alive?

Here are a couple of emerging ideas:

STRATEGY #1: We summon our strength, grit our teeth and hang in there through winter … heroically we sleep in the snow … we impress the world with our determination and guts … and when the cops come, we put our bodies on the line and resist them nonviolently with everything we've got.

STRATEGY #2: We declare "victory" and throw a party … a festival … a potlatch … a jubilee … a grand gesture to celebrate, commemorate, rejoice in how far we've come, the comrades we've made, the glorious days ahead. Imagine, on a Saturday yet to be announced, perhaps our movement's three month anniversary on December 17, in every #OCCUPY in the world, we reclaim the streets for a weekend of triumphant hilarity and joyous revelry.

We dance like we've never danced before and invite the world to join us.

Then we clean up, scale back and most of us go indoors while the die-hards hold the camps. We use the winter to brainstorm, network, build momentum so that we may emerge rejuvenated with fresh tactics, philosophies, and a myriad projects ready to rumble next Spring.

Whatever we do, let's keep our revolutionary spirit alive … let's never stop living without dead time.

for the wild,
Culture Jammers HQ

Only a report from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, about people who are camping at Cinelândia park: that's what most of them are doing.. just camping. After the first week, thieves and drugdealers hijacked the place (including the tents) where they are now just about 80%. The rest are canvassers from political parties and aspirants to aldermen who are trying to get a plataform to the next county election (october, 2012). Then, after a whole month - since the first sign and the very first tent - enduring what seems now to be deleterious (here), it should be time to occupy the neighborhoods, but... It's been hard to find good people with courage and whilling to sacrifice instead of get an opportunity. Those who left the occupation are afraid of shootings, not by police, by bandits. In fact, cops here are protecting the few honest (and naive) young people. And those are unwittingly serving as shield to the thieves whose now are free to do what they want around the area and hide stolen goods into their tents (besides the all day long use of hard drugs). Freedom has become license. Anyway, whe're talking about a one month occupation (first day: 27 tents; after one week: 120 tents; two weeks: 50 tents; now: around 40 tents) by simple people who seems to be waiting for a direction from OWS. Illarious? No, it's tragic! Where are our freedom fighters (in a country where electronic ballots - 100% fraud - "choose" all the politicians) beetween so many millions of people? Well... all I can say is that we're still looking for them to do a new occupation where assemblies can took place and produce solutions. I hope to be able to send a very good report news soon... For now, good luck to all.

I live in Brazil. 100% fraud? Well, obviously this can't be serious. Just an easy catchphrase to impress foreigners. I just found out about these people camping, already for almost a month - however the country knows nothing about it. Sorry friends, being naive is no virtue...

100% fraud is about electronic ballots - voting system - wich only Brazil has in the whole elections. If you can't read English, please don't try to comment. If you think electronic voting is secure, then you don't know nothing about this issue (watch Hacking Democracy and Invisible Ballots; if there is no problem to read, www.votoseguro.org and blackboxvoting.org). It's a ridiculous fraud which makes the brazilian political arena a theatre with criative characters for the moment. Those who could have real votes are the ones who are old names or have so many leaderships supporting them that makes impossible to the mafia election don't let them win (someones are violently removed by "natural causes" or not). As you said, you just live in Brazil... Your lack of concearn with one of the most important bases of democracy proves that you aren't Brazilian at all... Anyway, also to the ignorance we should say good luck.

Gosh it's all so heady, so exciting! Just like Imperial Russia before it turned into a horrifying communist slave state that looted, starved and murdered tens of millions of unremembered innocents to the benefit of the very Wall Street bankers they thought they were bringing down.

Libya is an atrocity that has turned a former socialist near paradise into just another division of Rothschild Inc.

Wake up people! You're being had.
