Is everyone missing the point about the license agreement? Why would any company stipulate such conditions? Any other legal contract, before you agree to it, you can change it. - Cross out phrases, sentences, even individual words that aren't to your liking. - That's called NEGOTIATING!
I think the real problem is that most internet-service users are too young to have much concept of rights and procedures, and companies like Microsoft and Google take advantage of that fact.
How many of you are MS Windows users, and have read the EndUserLicenseAgreement before clicking the "I Agree" button?
These companies are undermining basic, essential, social rights that your grand-parents fought very long and very hard to get.
How can such licenses have any sway at all, considering that the people they're making agreements with aren't old enough to have legal say?

hey, facebook just started this vote on a revised governance policy. looks like they actually heard about the dissatisfaction. I read through the new policies and basically they elaborated on a lot of things and changed very little. But I guess at least they are trying to make sure people know what it is they are doing.

It is good to read if folks like the idea or not. Fair enough. However, the real issue to my mind is that this activity is not disclosed upfront to users on the site, and user's are not given a choice to opt in or opt out.

I think it`s time to stop blaming other people and take responsability for your own acts.. it is not required to enter any information to open a facebook account other than your full name and birthdate (and it doenst even have to be the real ones)... i don`t see anything wrong about being part of a social network if you are going to have a conscious and healty use for it. You don't have to become addicted or give away every single detail about yourself.
i am not deffending facebook, my point is that we have to stop blaming the world and educate ourselves, take advantage of the benefits of technology and use it to improve our lives, don't let anyone scare you, be informed and reponsilble of your own acts and if there's something you don't like see what you can do to change it... it's the only way...

You are so right. I have thought that many times. After watching the vid I slipped into forgetting. Thank for taking me back to what is more real. It is us. Lots of us do enough damage on our own. Thats what I would like to illustrate more in my life. Thanks again.

anyone stupid enough to sign up to something without reading the full terms and conditions deserves to be exploited

Does anyone really read the small print of everythingthey sign up for? We'd spend our entire lives trying to work out what they all mean!

facebook is just an alternative (completely not essential) to real life. you found your old friends. so what? how does that add value to your day-to-day life? was facebook the only way to find your friends? even so, the idea/principle of exposing your preferences, photos and social network to a company that eventually would use them to fabricate mass consumption products to feed the masses and make profit..come on, are you really that comfortable with this? look at the principle, not your individual "fabricated" needs. why would you happily replace your real life and spending time with friends with time on your own on your computer - in a virtual world???/
by lee mason on February 21 2009, @08:35 am
its facebook ,you dolts! get over it. its the same with everything you do, only give what you want to be out there.chill out enjoy it for what it is.
if you have an addictive side ..don't use it, don't blame something else for your lack of self control. that applies to everything.
are you really that naive? this is why they had to start putting warning labels on hot things, to warn people it was hot!

I for one do not give a care that they spy on me...because I am not scared of being who I am. I will admit my lack of political affiliation or lack of religion to the government. I am not scared of having merchandise targeted at me because I do not buy things because a banner on the side tries to sell it to me. If one is ashamed of who they are then I guess don't get on Facebook. If an idea I have or a piece of art gets used without my consent then I guess I shouldn't have put it up on Facebook...or else I don't care if it is used for free by whomever. I choose not to live in fear of who watches me.
And I find it odd that there is an icon right beneath the video allowing you to post this on Facebook. Ironic.
by daisy on April 22 2009, @06:40 am
Hi Harkmatt,
The point I want to make is that because you have no religious and political affiliations, you have no reason to be concerned. What if you were a sufi moslem? Or a shia moslem? Or a member of a vegetarian society and the fbi is looking for an animal rights terrorist? And assume you are innocent of any wrongdoing but the a government entity seizes your computer and you lose papers and pictures you wrote, photos of people who are no longer alive, etc. This stuff happens all the time and because a person knows they are innocent they assume it would not happen to them. Please be concerned for other people without the sense to worry. That is exactly why it should be posted on facebook.

I dunno it seems a too much paranoid view from the brackets girl. Even if there is all true, who cares? The CIA used to have 2 underground bunkers each one the size of a football field of high tech listening technologies already in the 50s. Imagine what they have now! Do you think they need the Facebook to do their job? If "they" want to have you info, they will have it anyways. If you pay your coffee with a credit card today you are easily reachable.
I think this is the wrong focus. Want to really free your mind? Study and Learn. Being a hermit in this century with all the benefits for exchanging info with other cultures is not for me.
Cheers,
and I am not defending Facebook, but social networks can be used for good purposes as well.
by Tony on November 30 2008, @11:23 pm
Yea, but this also seems to be a scary game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. While I don't disagree that Facebook can easily be used for malicious and scary purposes, a recent study of the Six Degrees of Separation notion that all peoples are connected through very few degrees of separation. I personally am removed from DARPA by two degrees and three from IOA. Does that mean I'm a threat?!
by John Carcinogen on November 23 2008, @10:09 pm
We get it - facebook's creators sold the site out to data miners, marketing companies, and possibly private military contractors.
However, if the IOA - or whatever they are called - were out to gather as much data on everyone that was available, one would gather - eventually - that this video seems to dull its point rather quickly.
For example, let's say facebook never existed, that it was never thought up and it was never created - ever. Would the IOA still be mining private data on US citizens? According to this video, one would say yes.
While facebook's Terms Of Service are frightening if not taken into perspective, one has to remember the golden rule of the internet: NOTHING - absolutely NOTHING - that is uploaded to the internet, regardless of any characteristics - can be protected & guarded 100%.
We all have taken that risk by logging on to this site and posting comments, no matter how anonymous they may be.
With all this in mind,I still use Facebook.Great tool for community building. If one just does some basic online safety research and use common sense the caveats are minimal.
I agree, I've never had nor will have a social network page such as bebo or facebook, or myspace (even though myspace is slightly better as it is a lauchpad for many musicians) But seriously, since when did people actually care what you or anyone else did last summer except for your close friends and family. so ring them or meet them and tell them face to face. What's wrong with the world? though here i am now somehow contributing to the overall effect by posting on this site AHHHHHHH they get to you eventually......
Ive been on facebook under an alias for a long time but im sure thats only giving my a tiny bit more privacy, But somehow i have naturally become disinterested with it and rarely use it. The only reason i still have my account is to help distribute this video amongst Facebook users.
ahhh good old adbusters to remind us of something that should be self evident a-la post from j.carson above. i resisted establishing a facebook account until earlier this year in spite of what seemed like the rest of the world being on it for lots of similar reasons but now find myself in the thick of it with everyone. call it a guilty pleasure. seems a little funny that underneath the video above even adbusters has the 'share' link so you can send this video to your friends- via facebook!
fb and this kind of stuff pull you in because its easy mindless culture. its a similar motivation to the fast food drive through...easy...mindless...consumption. did anyone really suspect otherwise??!!!
I left facebook yesterday! Not for the reasons stated in this video, but for the scary observation that its turning the otherwise critically thinking adults of my generation into a bunch of 12-year-old girls.
"Look at me!", "Look at what I did!". Who gives a fuck what you're consuming? What 'apps' you added? What banal thinks pop into your head for you to post to your circle of friends?
No shit! Hello people, think some philanthropist invented this so you could have a better life? Nobody with this kind of power gives a shit about you really, but rather what they can either get from you or prevent you from doing. DISMANTLE your facebook and get out in the real world before it disappears! Our ancestors socialized somehow, and apparently it worked all right. Thanks
How do I know what you're telling me is true. You are asking me to be sceptical about Facebook, but why should I trust you? What are your sources? What makes you more reliable then any other thing I find on the internet?
oh totally not.
anyone could sign into facebook and look at your page. although they have safety precautions there are still ways you can get in...there always is
